Role Play Challenge: Asoka and the Doomsday Machine

So much for Buddhism....

I wonder, can you check why Shaka is mad at you? Al I can understand of course, but what about the others? They're all not like Sal or Izzy, so a few hammers on the monk, like before, should do the trick. Of course, tech is now the first priority. A rush to maces or crossbows would be needed to keep India safe from the blind heathens.

Last Note : Remember the AP. That thing could change the game, and doesn't the popup text when it's built sounds cool? '' Buddhist religious leaders have a vision of uniting the Buddhist people under the Apostolic Palace'' or something.

Yes the AP, on my TTD list. Since I got an early start on forges, I probably should build one in Delhi and hope to pop a GE so I can rush the AP. Remember I cannot tech theology until Christianity is discovered.

Shaka was -3 relation due to close borders. He seams pretty ticked at Kublai at the Moment, but I am thinking of hitting him next. Peal off a few cities. Dam rules about not founding other religions, I could use CoL after teching construction.

This is really turning into a slugfest. Caesar and Sitting Bull might be pretty important since they are the only cautious ones. I'd be concerned about Kublai Khan he's jumped out to a strong early lead and appears to have one of the strongest armies. You'll have to keep pumping out a lot of troops if you're gonna fight so many wars. :deadhorse:

Yes, the wars will call for some strategy. Kublai may have to be lured in so I can surround the stack once the Tank does it's collateral damage.

Being the only leader with a non-military tech I have to make sure I can counter each AI's UU at least

Mongols: Spears, lot's of them and roads so the Tank can move
Zulu: Axes to combat the Impi. Also need some Combat I, Shocked promoted HAs.
Greeks: Dead ducks right now
Russians: Could be a problem. AT least we are a long way off from Cossacks
Romans: Good, let those Prats fight against Sitting Bull. Native Americans are the best equipped to handle Prats.
Sitting Bull: THe bigtime turle, I have little fear of defeating his attacks. Chariots eat those dog warriors for lunch.

Now what I do have an edge with, is the War elephants. AS I see noone has Ivory or the needed techs yet. Let's see how well those Impi hold off Cats/Jumbos while dealing with Mongol Keshiks.

Asoka and the Doomsday MAchine: Part D

Well not sure how blessed Asoka is. Right now seams like we are doing OK, but the economy is really tanked. Not much here but some warring. What I really would like is suggestions for an overall strategy here. Those diplomatic rules are essentially killing us as we have no trading partners and I fear we shall be facing rifles with longbows, if we are lucky.

First off all we finished teching construction, then started alphabet. That's about as far as we got in tech.

I am definitely feeling a little cramped and unloved, so we decide to payback Shaka a bit

AsokaD0000.jpg

And of course a class guy deserves a class war declaration

AsokaD0001.jpg

WE easily take that former barbarian city to consolidate our borders a bit

AsokaD0002.jpg

Shaka sent some troops in but definitely less than last time. WE fairly quickly get peace, those Jumbos seamed to talk him into it.

AsokaD0003.jpg

Converting Shaka to Buddhism may not be too smart, but I really need a friend right now. Unfortunately with teh rules I must turn down all requests from the other AIs, even some fair trades. The tank did get it's paint scrathed a bit and required some maintenance.

With an army on hand, the tank to defend against Shaka I decided to hit Big AL again just to remove that Greek threat.

AsokaD0004.jpg

And very soon (Al did actually try to send an archer rush against Sparta).

AsokaD0005.jpg

Al is down to Thebe whioch unfortunately I cannot get to since it's behind Mongol lands.

We get peace

AsokaD0006.jpg

Giving us sailing somewhere in 500 AD (yeah).

I saved here

Our northern borders with Shaka

AsokaD0007.jpg

And teh eastern borders with Kublai

AsokaD0008.jpg

We are at 30% science with little commerce, a few specialists in Delhi, and two dangerous rival arround us.

We do have 8 pretty decent cities

AsokaD0009.jpg

Victory conditions, as you see Kublai is already starting to claim some yardage.

AsokaD0010.jpg

Our demograpohics look pretty sickly

AsokaD0011.jpg

Powergraph numbers are pretty decent, even close to Kublai.

AsokaD0012.jpg

So where do we go?

All I can say is that if Shaka stays at Buddhist I am required to defend him, even if I have to go to war with Kublai. Hell, what a game. Going slow at it and I fear this is a spiral heading down fast but a good slugfest is always alot of fun. Would help if I had at least one friend to defend my back though.

Get those fast workers chopping out all that jungle and laying down some cottages to get your economy up and running.

Since your borders are closed with almost everyone, consider picking up banking sooner than usual for mercantilism at some point.

Prioritize Sankore and Spiral Minaret to help the economy and research (though you'll have to leave Divine Right at 1 turn away and then discover after someone else so you won't found another religion).

These are some tough rules - too bad your religion didn't hit more AI's first. :(

All in all good play and very entertaining. :goodjob:

Not actually bad! Give your cities some time to grow, and you should be fine.

What about exploring? I always feel bad if all I know is my land, but of course, no hammers can be spared on that now.

Looks like is SE this time, which brings me to war. Kublai is guaranteed to hate you now (right?), so what about a pillaging party of phants?

Once I finish teching alphabet I can build a spy to scout. Remember the rules, no open borders with infadels. Shaka is still ticked so he won't open borders either.

To run SE I need to either tech CoL or build libraries, neither of which is going along quickly. Seams like I keep having to build military. Al and Shaka are agressive so my military took a bit of a hit from each war.

So alphabet/CoL, and workers/libraries/cottages. Got it:rolleyes:

I agree with other posters: you've got a lot of land to clear and cottage.

You also have a lot of missionaries to build, per your rules. You have a few (newly-conquered) cities without buddhism, and Shaka as well has cities without buddhism (once/if you get him to open borders).

3) He must open borders (or try) with all Buddhist leaders. He cannot open borders or trade with leaders that have other state religions. Leaders adopting Free Religion are tolerated. There is one exception to the rule, Asoka may open border with a heathen only if he is running Mercatilism and theocracy.

theocracy does not allow non-state religion spread, so how does this mercantilism/theocracy rule do anything for you?

EDIT: There is one exception to the rule, Asoka may open border with a heathen only if he (he = Asoka or the AI??) is running Mercatilism and theocracy. If you are referring to yourself, the solution is simple: adopt mercantilism and theocracy, assuming you can get diplomacy up with some of them

in hindsight, with this rule, wouldn't the strategy be to build missionaries as quickly as possible in the early game and get them into some AI cities before they adopted all those other religions? it seems you are now forced into a game of conquest since open borders are impossible and religion spread is impossible without open borders (unless you wait a very, very long time and hope some of them start adopting free religion, which is not guaranteed)

I recommend saying to heck with the economy and pressing now against kublai. Whip elephants/catapults/axes and live off the spoils of war. Don't keep so many cities that your economy really tanks. Just keep the capital and 1-2 other good ones maybe that block off terrain, raze the rest.

Worry about recovering your economy then imo. This game isn't shaping up to be about the economy, it's a manning-up contest and you've got the biggest stick imho with the elephants.

Some clarifications.

What Asoka wants is as key alein religions in his cities. Taking an AI city with a different city is one thing, opening border that allows and AI to send a missionary is not. Also is fairness of the game, Asoka should not have the benefit of the foreign trade route with heretical leaders. Asoka also wants to spread Buddhism. The compromise, ASOKA has to be in theocracy AND Mecrantilism before he will open borders with heatherns for the sole purpose of spreading Buddhism.

As far as forgetting the economy and going on a killing spree to make Ghengis proud, I am all for that!!! I have frequestly said Asoka is one of the betetr war mongers!!! But a few items to point out before we get the Indian blood boiling...

1) I cannot raze any city that is Buddhist.
2) I HAVE to raze the Judaist holy city of Kublai (that will certainly earn me some AI brownie points!).
3) I should wait a little bit until Shaka decides who he hates more. If he attacks Kublai I am obligated to attack Kublai also.
4) Killing AI SoDs with my modern Armor is fun as hell!
5) FH is right, in rock/paper/scissors Jumbo's beat them all.

I think I agree with futurehermit. You need to seriously cripple the mongle. I reckon also you should finish off Alex. With the limited amount of good land availible to you you need to go out and grab as much as possible before you consolidate your economy. Dash for mercantilism, build lots of military and go!

I think this is goint to end in a conquest so the faster you put youself in a strong postion regarding the land issue the better.

Also if Shaka attacks you are you allowed to destroy him? Rule #4 could be a problem if the war drags I guess.

Have you made your Modern Army a GG unit yet? Very worthwhile especially for the +1 movement you could get.

Not sure I want to waste a GG on a defensive unit. It's already Barrage III, drill I and due for another promotion soon. It is serving two fronts now, but once the Zulu is somewhat tamed it only needs to patrol the eastern front.

Asoka and the Doomsday MAchine: PArt V

Well you wanted war, we got it. Shaka declared on us and then Kublai which took most of the segment. Alot of the mongol horde broke themselves against the weapon of the Buddhist god while we sent our SoD to raze 2 of teh core Mongol cities.

So onto the story!!

First we continued teching alphabet, and popped our next GP

AsokaE0000.jpg

Yes a prophet which we used to bulb theology as only one AI has it. We started building the AP in Delhi with plenty of chopping of the remaining forrests and just before we build the thing

AsokaE0001.jpg

Stupid Zulu, as I was saying

AsokaE0002.jpg

And of course we voted ourselves onto the holy chair. Also of note Stalin had 1 Buddhist city, important later on.

So we captured and burned the nearest Zulu city after killing the SoD with our mega-tank.

AsokaE0003.jpg

We moved the tank out of the city right to the borders and all of a sudden Shaka was willing to talk

AsokaE0004.jpg

Monarchy for peace, yeah we'll take that. We start teching CoL followed by most of calender this segment

So we moved our beloves Jumbo stack AND the tank to the east thiking of hitting the Mongol, but seams likes Kublai has the same idea.

AsokaE0005.jpg

And next turn

AsokaE0006.jpg

Also Al and JC were vassals of Kublai, so I fighting 3 AIs. JC is doing as well as AL, Kublai has ALOT of roman cities.

OK, his stack is next to Corinth. We simply attacked with the tank twice (remember the free blitx promotion) to quickly wear the stack down, then send our HAs into the fray to finish the unit and get that flanking damage on the cats. I should note we got 1 GG which we did attach to the tank but also gave some experience to 4 cats, which ar enow CR III.

We send a SoD to explore some Mongol land.

AsokaE0007.jpg

We found the capital, not the holy city we thought

AsokaE0008.jpg

After careful consideration and reflection, Asoka contacts the Buddhist god to determine the fate of those Mongol citizans.

AsokaE0009.jpg

Several wonders were lost to the world including the pyramids. Oh well.

We quickly retreated to Corinth, saving most of the Stack from Kublai's vicious counter attack which broke upon the Tank.

AsokaE0010.jpg

At this point we are getting closer in the power graph numbers,

AsokaE0011.jpg

Thenm a serious of fortunate events occured, first

AsokaE0012.jpg

Oh yeah, soon I have both Shaka and Stalin attacking Kublai from 2 other directions. I just love the AP!!!

AsokaE0014.jpg

And even better

AsokaE0015.jpg

OK, a trading partner. Enough to up those trade route yields for now.

AsokaE0016.jpg

Razing a double holy city!! Just feel the love.

Al broke away from Kublai so we made peace there. Shaka also made peace with BKublai followed by Stalin.

We nailed that northern Mongol city

AsokaE0018.jpg

And finally Kublai is willing to discuss peace without me having to give him theology or Corinth.

AsokaE0019.jpg

Our eastern borders

AsokaE0020.jpg

And the powergraph

AsokaE0021.jpg

That is where I saved the game.

SO a few comments/points

1) I have no feel how Stalin is doing in power, but probably better than us. He has CS and Machinery, so he gots maces.

2) OK, Shakla is cautious, how far can I trust him right now.

3) Techpath? OK we got a GP coming in 5 turns, let's hope it's a GE so we can bulb Machinery. After that I say we tech CS/engineering/guilds/banking. If we get a Great Scientist I'll just shoot myself.

4) We are starting to build those cheap courthouses, let's see how far we get there before I see more S'Ds.

Well played! Great job grabbing the AP to initiate a bit of a dogpile.
Looks like research didn't really take a hit from the continued war so it appears continuing to fight was the right move.

:goodjob:

From the square corner I guess Confu.

Well played, the AP is useful for this type of game.
Now you can see that KK has Aesthetics, this means Shwedagon Paya is now a competed wonder, you wouldn't shoot yourself (against Buddhist laws ;) ) if you miss it, would you, since between libs and phants there's just no time.

And I do want to know, what was the motivation for razing Karakorum? I'm fu- , no, curious
