Role Play Challenge TNG: Askia, The Brute

I agree with :coffee: mug. Hannibal's land is only gonna be productive if you get it in a rush and culture war for it, or if you kill some europeans.

Personally I like to follow an 'ALL YOUR EUROPE ARE BELONG TO US!!!' Strategy, but until the praets obsolete we should probably make do with Egypt.

DT
Planning Conquests :egypt:

I like Egypt as the first target. It will lock up Africa for quite a while, especially since Shaka and Zara will prevent Saladin from squatting along the coast. It's also the most fertile land on the continent, and has enough production to let you to take out the other three civs in relatively short order.

As for Hannibal, I think the cultural pressure from Europe means you need to take him out very early, or late enough that you can just keep rolling through Europe.

Well, The Spanis is closer to Carthage now but seeing that they dont have religion i dont think the Spanish or the Romans can produce enough culture to drive you off the sea... but, the other guys are right about Egypt: Horse, Copper, Stone and Marble... and Owning the Sainai is vital, and now that Zara is in the game, there will be no Arabic settlements in africa (exept Madagasca)

WTH, no war? askia got the cowflu or what! eagerly awaiting the next update =)

No, Askia got a dose of territory reality. DO not fear, her shall make up for it, and has a plan.

Askia, the Brute: The Songhian War Preperation

The Settler was ready in the city of Gao, but where to go??? The Songhai people assumed expansion would go towards the southern shore, potentially getting the riches of the gold and gems.

However, Askia had different ideas and sent the settler towards the northwest coat.

The people we puzzled as the only thing there was some elephants on a hill, something the Songhai already had access to.

"I said to got NW fools! I can smell metal over there!"

AskiaB0000.jpg

Askia smiled and instructed Songhai research to develope technologies for the upcoming wars.

AskiaB0001.jpg

That folks is a LONG research time to iron working. While a skirmisher rush may appear interesting, Askia is a praagmatic, if brutal warrior. He needs metals or mounted units.

So research is directed slowly towards iron working as the primitive Songhai grows and establishes communication.

As things progress, more leaders appear

AskiaB0002.jpg

Askia spits as the Persian leader leaves, considering him a weak leader.

The next leader appears a bit stronger

AskiaB0003.jpg

ASkia nods in respect here.

Another settler was built and sent south

AskiaB0004.jpg

Dejenne was set up to produce commerce from the sea and gems, another reason iron working is needed.

FINALLY, in 1150 BC

AskiaB0005.jpg

Access to swordsmen is immediate as the iron resource was already mined and roaded, the Songhai people were amazed at Askia foresight on the subject.

Meanwhile the city of Gao has become pretty strong in commerce and decent in production.

AskiaB0006.jpg

However the city of Timbuktu is still essentially only at 1 population and working the 5 hammer iron mine. Still enough to construct a good military.

AskiaB0007.jpg

Songhai was deeply behind in needed techs and started researching fishing, however some other leaders have developed alphabet

AskiaB0008.jpg

Trades were made with the Holy Romans

AskiaB0009.jpg

AskiaB0010.jpg

Research started on Masonry as Askia met another leader

AskiaB0011.jpg

Another weakling leader, Askia ignores him.

Another trade with Charlemagne

AskiaB0013.jpg

At this time the first Songhain army has been assembled

AskiaB0012.jpg

Askia looks to the north at the Catheginian empire. Sure there may be cultural pressures but so what.

AS the troops move along the desert, MAsonry is finished leaving Askia with decisions to be made

AskiaB0014.jpg

While the people request the knowledge of currency and a Code of LAws, Askia shakes his head and instructs the people to ......

Saved here on the eve of war. Askia has a plan, and that involves taking Carthage first.

Research Askia is looking at MAth/Construction/HBR for war Elephants and catapults.

Enough for now, next segment WAR!!!!!!!

Any chance to get Alphabet from Hannibal before declaring on him ?

Those Carthaginian cities are going to be under severe cultural pressure from Rome and Spain. What's your plan to keep them from flipping and/or having usable tiles to work (i.e., seafood)?

Kill Isabella and Agustus!

haha, now that's a plan i like :) essentially, killing the others is the solution to ALL your problems.

although it might be possible that hannibal constructed walls, from my own experience i'd say that it's rather unlikely. doesn't even matter in the end - askia and his mighty warriors might not know how to crush the walls or how to climb them, but they certainly know that you can build a decent stairway made of swordmen corpses.

Only noticed this thread now.
Mali makes for an entertaining challenge on the Earth map.

The strategy that has worked for me is to get a city on the Mediterranean quickly (either the NW tip or rush Carthage early if they are there) and then get over to the Iberian Peninsula and use that as a base to expand further into Europe.

What we see in this RPC is an attempt to do it fairly late. I like to make the crossing at a time in which skirmishers are still effective vs cities with archer defense. It will be interesting to see what happens here. Hopefully, Zara and Shaka will keep eachother occupied for a long time.

I am not sure why Gao was settled in that place. It is a tempting spot but the flood plains and the jungle create killer bad health.

haha good talk... liked the "songhai people were impressed with the foresight of Askia" :-D

Interesting way to do tech trades without the usual aesth bait. I am interested how it will play out

I think it's the best site for the Mali capital (assuming no cheesy "long walk" to settle next right on top of the enemy). It has all the good hammer tiles nearby, which is crucial in the short term for building units, and then once Mad relieves some of the Mediterranean AIs of their seafood and grains (and lives) the health problems will be offset and it can really come into its own as a commerce city too.

Invasion of Carthage: (This first Invasion will be a headace:) ::SPOILER ALERT::

Assuming you are going for Carthage first, you can avoid the river on the West side, so my advice would be to attack from the south...

As for Utica, the second city, is on a hill, with a river on the East side, so you have to move from the riverbank 1 tile to the SW to have the best odds...

Askia, The Brute: The First Victums of Songhai

The time had come at last! Slowly had been the army construction due to the bitterly arid lands, the Songhai needs new lands!

Askia sends his troops towards the Cartheginians and then demands an audience with their leader.

AskiaC0000.jpg

Hannibal is a nit surprised at this intrusion and appears little prepared. In fatc he brings along a lacky

AskiaC0001.jpg

The rumors of the Spanish and CArtheginian relations were legondary and appears true. Apparently some nonesense idea of using the Spanish lands as a launching pad for attacks on the Northern continent.

Askia had little tolerance or desire for such suttle diplomacy and preferred the direct approach

AskiaC0002.jpg

The capital has no walls and is on level ground. Askia swears vengence at the arrogance of CArthage.

As the war begins, Askia meets more leaders including the culture orientated Greeks

AskiaC0003.jpg

And the Industrious Romans

AskiaC0004.jpg

The Mediteranian Sea area appears to be full of interest, mush more plush than the dry Songahi lands.

The Songhai get their first taste of blood and like it, the capital CArthage falls quickly

AskiaC0005.jpg

troops are healed, reinforcements sent north and a trade route built to the mediteranian city.

All during this time the Songhai are researching the technology of MAth, for future wars. For now Askia meets other new leader such as the Glutanous Suiliman

AskiaC0006.jpg

And the Ruthless Russian Stalin.

AskiaC0007.jpg

Askia found the Ottomans and Russians have little liking for each other.

Askia also meets the self diefied Gilgamesh

AskiaC0008.jpg

And ignores the arrogant king.

The Songhai army re-established itself for an assault on the next CArtheginian city

AskiaC0009.jpg

Which is burned to the ground. Hannibal screams in anguish as Isabella quakes in fear. The last Cartheginian city lies on the shore of the mediteranian nearer the Egyptians.

More leader arrive to interupt Askia's warring

AskiaC0011.jpg

Justinian turns out to be a pretty good trading partner

AskiaC0012.jpg

Leading Songhai ready to begin researching construction for catapults.

The Russian-Ottoman rivalry erupts into blatent warfare mush to Askia's happiness

AskiaC0013.jpg

However, as Askia is turning his attention towards the north, he finds a closer neighbor to the east, in lands he considers proper Songhai lands

AskiaC0014.jpg

For now it's more important to secure the north, but Egypt is getting a little too big for themselves.

AS the final battle against CArthage was planned, the city of CArthage culture flipped to Isabella. Askia cursed this and planned sent his army to recapture the city after assaulting Hannibal's last defense.

AskiaC0015.jpg

Askia is continually harassed with new leaders

AskiaC0016.jpg

BIG NOSE, is that what you are bothering ASKIA with, your BIG NOSE!

Back to more pressing matters

AskiaC0017.jpg

Arg!!!!!!!!!!!

AskiaC0018.jpg

Like I was saying

AskiaC0019.jpg

The CArtheginians are destroyed, the last survivors are taken back to Songhai lands in chains. Hannibal is brought forth to meet Askia.

However, a Great General named Pizzaro is born in Gao

AskiaC0020.jpg

Askia strokes his beard in thought pondering Hannibal's fate, then get's an idea. Askia has a meeting with Hannibal in private and a deal is struck! The Great General Pizarro is silently killed, to be replaced by Hannibal!

Hannibal has been spared death, and better yet has a place of honor and power in the city of Gao. Yes, the Great General Hannibal is at the head military instructor a position of great power he embraces and his visions of world conquest gone. He will remain a great Allie to Askia and offers secret advice to the Songhai Lord, research Horseback riding after COnstruction and Askia will have access to a mighty military weapon!

Askia is greatly pleased and after reclaiming the former Cartheginian capital from the Spanish

AskiaC0021.jpg

Renames it the City of Hannibal, cementing the bonds between Hannibal and Songhai!

Still there was the problem of the Spanish and work on a Gally was begun in the coastal city of Timbuktu.

AskiaC0024.jpg

Troops were loaded and transported to the Silver hill, in preparation for the attack on MAdrid. While Isabella is willing to talk peace, Askia is NOT as his honor has been offended by the Spanish Queens earlier war declaration. Negotiations are formal and pompous with Isabella, but Askia is intrigued by her regally and rumor has is Isabella is highly "Atracted" to the Songhai Brute.

This does nothing to slow the troop transport.

Meanwhile mroe leaders are met.

AskiaC0025.jpg

AskiaC0026.jpg

To Be Continued.......

Askia the Brute: The first Victim's of Songhai.

Before the final Spanish war, trades were made

AskiaC0027.jpg

AskiaC0028.jpg

Askia was delighted to find himself elected King of Songhai. Obviously he was the only one with a vote, but still let the democratic system of West Africa reign!

Troops were assembled, reinforcements sent, and the assault on MAdrid undertaken.

AskiaC0030.jpg

AskiaC0031.jpg

Isabella met the conquering leader bravely although fear was in her eyes. Askia tossed his sword aside and took the Spanish Dame as his concubine.

Askia announced the former Queen should be treated with the utmost repect (except when he was present), allowed to retain her palace, and he renamed the city of Madrid as Isabella! Isabella was greatly pleased at her existing position although she looked extremely tired and worn out but not without a big smile.

Askia did wander the city after his victory to see what plunder there was

AskiaC0032.jpg

The Oracle was built, thus the City of Isabella would be producing a Great Prophet soon. Too bad this zealotous wench had not founded an early religion.

Construction was completed, and research directed towards horse back riding at Hannibal's suggestion.

Askia views his northern lands

AskiaC0033.jpg

He has a foot hold on the northern continent, with Portugal to the west and a culturally obnoxious Rome to the east.

Catapults were under construction, all with 2 promotions thanks to Hannibal's guidance.

AskiaC0033.jpg

A stronger navy was also being built. The Songhai must increase and take more land!

Askia evaluates the tech situation

AskiaC0035.jpg

AskiaC0036.jpg

Nobody offering horseback riding and the Egyptians alreayd have Longbows!

Askia has one last meeting with Hannibal before heading towards Isabella's palace for some greatly needed rest and relaxation.

So folks, where to next!

Interesting that you say that Egypt was settling proper Songhai lands... I thought all lands were proper Songhai lands!
