Role Play Challenge TNG: Askia, The Brute

I think I might give this a go, though it won't be done until after Thanksgiving.

You probably want to tech to IW or Construction using your commerce-high land (look at the floodplains!), build up an army of Swords/Cats/Elephants (preferably amphibious) and take North Africa for production, followed by Egypt for obvious reasons.

Considering your in a less than optimal position i wish you good luck.

---

I think your two early difficulties will be Ethiopia and/or the Zulu. Depending on what occurs Zara always seems to expand rather quickly with a largish empire which may be too established by the time Songhai is established to be easily defeated (and the more immediate targets of Egypt and Carthage give him more time as well)

Shaka has in my games conquered Zara early before which if it happens in your game gives him a rather large empire and being aggressive he'll have a large army, so he will also be difficult to conquer in such a case that he is not confined to southern africa.

Egypt and Carthage are confined and therefore are easier to deal with. I would definitely consider a quick settlement near the iron in the atlas mountains, perhaps between the iron and elephant in order to prevent carthage from acquiring a natural source of metals and of course get a source yourself for dealing with more troublesome neighbours.

Oh, and may I suggest a crossing of the meditteranean after the fall of egypt and carthage, europe is the strongest land in the civ world, and if your looking for a world conquest acquiring europe will kick-start your war machine quite nicely. (besides its much more useful land than most of africa anyway.)

Wooptedoo another RPC. Bring it Mad! A good thing that you do not start as Hannibal. He looks a bit screwed with his capital or is there a lot of sea food above his capital?

I believe the Carthage site has some seafood.

Askia the Brute: Usurping the Mali

Mansa smiled to his people as he organized them along the Niger river. A fertile land with stone and cows, a land that could bring great rished to him with perhaps some leftover for the loyal followers. Yes, he had a reputation, the truely greatest leader at getting riches and knowledge and there was mush to do.

The warriors were a crude and rather unintelligent group which were sent towards the southwest to explore although one rather large and dark individual lingered, spposedly to protect the great Mansa. Mansa felt his start was too close the northern desert so he ordered his people to more Southeast.

AskiaA0000.jpg

In that moment of chaos where the capital was erected, and big and dark figure came up behind Mansa. As Mansa was telling his people about the future riches a massive club weilded by a massive individual came behind him and "WACK"

MAnsa crumpled to the ground in a lifeless heap, his skull crushed in by the dark figure behind.

A new shape emerged, big, broad, snarling, and not ready to listen to discussion.

"Former Mali people, you are no longer the tribe of Mansa Musa, for he is dead. I am your new lord, Askia, and you are now the people of the Songhai. I have traveled the wilderness and I tell you this land has many rivals and great lands that are justifyable your's. The bartering ways of the Mali foll would have led you nowhere, you need a stronge leader like Askia. And if you disagree, then let a challenger come face me."

Askia stood on a rock staring at the people menacing with a large club. No one came foreward.

Askia grunted in satisfaction and began describing the Songhai enemies in these lands as the citizans started constructng the capital of Gao.

"People, to the north there is the dangerous CArtheginians."

AskiaA0001.jpg

"People, to the east are the arrogant Egyptians and their false god-king ruler"

AskiaA0002.jpg

"People, to the south is the ruthless Zulu who's leader is 'almost' as strong as your leader"

AskiaA0003.jpg

"People, to the far east there is a religious fanatc who cares only about his faith, whatever that may be"

AskiaA0004.jpg

"People, all these leader seek to steal your lands and must be destroyed. They bring many riches and wonders that will help you all leave the stench of these Nigerian River flood plains."

"So learn my people, learn the tools to first live and then to fight"

So the people of Songhai began researching

Agriculture
Hunting
Animal Husbandry
Archery
Pottery (almost finished)

While the city of Songhai built workers, warriors, and a settler.

An explorer traveled along the western shore of this dark continent to find where these dangerous rivals lived, soon the Zulu warrior's lands were discovered

AskiaA0006.jpg

At the southern tip. Good lands but behind a wall of jungle. Time for that later.

Soon another warrior explored the north to find where Carthage lay.

AskiaA0007.jpg

Ah, very close with the Sahara seperating the two empires.

As the explorer continued North a new leader was found

AskiaA0008.jpg

Askia is amazed at a woman leading these Spanish people, and he leer's evilly towards her as a cruel smile spreads across his face. The Zealotish Queen suddenly becomes pale and flees into her places of prayer although she does not have any god's to pray too yet. Askia laughes to himself and moves onto other more important matters.

Such as the nearest neighbor, and possibly threatening suitor to the Spanish wench.

AskiaA0009.jpg

Askia laugh's at the fools ornate clothes and his uninspiring lands that compete with the Spanish. Two very easy targets for the Songhai.

In fact the Cartheginians, Spanish, and Portugese all share a common border

AskiaA0010.jpg

And could fall very quickly.

However, Askia has mere sand and water to build an empire. Yes, Songhai has powerful Skirmishers now, but he needs cold hard metal to realize his plans! And while his mind in on conquest and he is a Brutish leader, he is no fool and realizes the need of commerce to fund his future war-machine.

As the western end of the continent is mapped out

AskiaA0011.jpg

Askia can smell the location of metal and upcoming death and destruction. Yes, in the desolate hills along that western coast. Sheep and more elephants, but a big treasure there IF the Songhai can research the needed technologies fast enough.

The first Songhai settler is created, construction of a barracks or first skirmisher is being decided. The question is where does the Songhai settle city #2???

A larger view of the DArk Continent

AskiaA0012.jpg

Pottery is 4 turns away and a worker is building a road towards the future location of iron on the north-west coast. Askia plans to send the first settler there, a useless and throw away city, but needed.

After settling the city, a barracks is needed to produce newly promoted skirmishers, however, a new city to the south east coast my be a neccesity to discourage other nations from settling there.

As far as research, Askia is Financial and many cottages will spearhead massive research. I think Bronze Working and Iron Working are the next techs, then it is time.....

that unhealthiness is painful ~ compared to europe the african startpositions are really... not so good. is egypt still the #1 target for askia? maybe let him live for it is said by the prophets that he shall build the pyramids, so i'd be reasonable to go after beardman in the north!

AHHH!!! The pain-start-of-dooom!
I can't stand the mali start.
I agree, go for BW->IW and spam Swords (all the better to slaughter :ar15:, pillage :commerce: and Buuurn :fire: you with!) and then take out a neighbour. Carthage can probably wait, I would prefer to take Egypt and take the Nile and all the juicy wonders Rammy will build there.

'Prepare for War' :ar15:

Tried to run this as a shadow, and I get no user interface. I can't recall what needs to be changed in the config settings to fix that problem with mods, any ideas?

EDIT: NM, got it fixed by changing NoCustomAssets to = 1. What UI mod are you using with it, Mad?

Looks like t' ol' BUG mod to me.

You can find it here.

BUG-Best Mod EVER! :D

Thanks Hrun & drlake for the hints on how to setup that 40civ mod..

I think it might be helpful to spell the instructions out a little bit more detailed. The following is working for me on a relatively clean BTS 3.19 & BUG Mod install:
1. Download 40CivsV60.rar
2. Extract into %USERPROFILE%\My Documents\My Games\Beyond the Sword\MODS
3. Edit %USERPROFILE%\My Documents\My Games\Beyond the Sword\MODS\40Civs\40Civs.ini and change NoCustomAssets to 1.
(/edit: this works for loading the save, but you loose BUGs UI features..
)

/edit
3. Better Solution: Copy "CustomAssets/Config" to "<mod>/Assets" so that the path to init.xml becomes "<mod>/Assets/Config/init.xml".
(see Merging BUG with other Mods)

I've got BUG, but it won't load with the 40 civ mod for some reason.

I also merged the 40civ+BUG4.3 here

Hmm.... Settle on the desert tile 1W to the Iron...

Not im getting all Cato the Elder "Furthermore, i think Carthage MUST be destroyed/Ceterum autem censeo, Carthaginem esse delendam" :P

Then, Egypt.... GLORY!!!

Just a thought:
You can Skirmisherstrangle your first target, so that they are easy pickings when you have good attacking units, and an early dow wont get you as many :You declared on our friend etc.
Carthage would be a nice port to Mare Nostrum early, to secure our north.
Just my 2 cents :)

I like Egypt as the first target. It will lock up Africa for quite a while, especially since Shaka and Zara will prevent Saladin from squatting along the coast. It's also the most fertile land on the continent, and has enough production to let you to take out the other three civs in relatively short order.

As for Hannibal, I think the cultural pressure from Europe means you need to take him out very early, or late enough that you can just keep rolling through Europe.
