I see people talking in GotM threads about rolling and rerolling and getting less turns of anarchy. How does one do this?

(Searching this topic only brings up other GotM threads)

TIA.

I think it means starting Anarchy and then constantly reloading a save until they get a duration that they are happy with. However, I don't think it works if 'Preserve Random seed' is on

Actually, in specific reference to turns in anarchy, I think that this refers to something a little different. Say you revolt and get 8 turns until you can reestablish a government. While still in anarchy, you revolt yet again (not having previously saved the game and re-loaded it), and this time, you get 6 turns until you reestablish a government. This is only useful for the longer periods of anarchy (i.e. 7+ turns), because the chances are still pretty high that you can get a lower period of anarchy.

And then of course, there is the other kind of re-rolling in which preserve random seed is turned off and you just keep reloading a save until what you want to happen happens.

I never performed the trick myself, but it works along these lines: when you discover the governmet-tech in question, you go from tech-screen to domestic advisor and incite the revolution. This is considered to take place in the interturn. When the regular turn begins, it´s when you get your second shot. I´m not sure here, but either you´ll be asked to change government as you are usually and say ´Yes´. Or you go to F1 screen and incite revolution again. Something like this.

How do you know how many turns of Anarchy you are going to have, in order to know if you want to revolt again?

Not quite.

As I understand it, it works like this:
1) you learn the government technology
2) you get the change governments pop up window
3) you immediately revolt using the pop up window
4) you check the advisor to see how many turns the anarchy will last
5) if you don't like the number of turns you go to the F1 screen and change governments there
and get a new "roll" for number of turns anarchy

No reloading required. It is not officially an exploit but I consider it to be one.

Go to the Domestic Advisor (F1) and look in the upper right corner where the domestic advisor is saying things like: "Persepolis is not growing sire..."

Click that until it says "we should have the government under control in __ turns..."

One thing to note (and why I don't consider it an exploit) is that you could get a longer anarchy period with the re-roll. You need to be careful that why trying to shorten a 7 turn anarchy you don't end up with a 9 turn one.

The length of the anarchy is based on the size of your empire and a random factor, so a very large empire will normally get at least 4 turns while small one might only get 2 turns.

Of course, this all goes out the window for the religious tribes.

The problem with that is that the number of turns of anarchy is usually lower if you revolt at the begining of the turn.

Another way to do this is to revolt one turn before researching the government tech and finish the research with a scientist. When you learn the new tech you'll get a popup asking if you want to revolt and then you can revolt again (or choose the "No, we're happy with anarchy" option  ).

Just try to change governments while in anarchy. The advisor will say something along the lines of "Did you take your medication?" Twonky has it right.

Gov tech comes in, and advisor asks 'what next?'
Choose 'big picture'
Go to Domestic Advisor (F1) and revolt
Click on the advisor until he tells you how many turns it will be
When you exit the advisor screens, you will be asked if you want to revolt
If you don't like the turns, choose "Yes, let the revolt begin!"
If you do like what you got, choose "No, we are happy with Anarchy."
