Ovid was exiled to the Black Sea, and wrote about being surrounded by Sarmatian barbarians in his "Tristia", after offending Augustus, which remains to this idea a great mystery.... what exactly did Ovid do? I agree with you though, being sent to live with Sarmatians was considered true exile and "beyond civiliziation" for the Romans, especially for an urban sophisticate like Ovid.
