Rome total realism.. more boring, or is it just me?

For m2: Road to Jerusalem (unpatched M2)

1.2 Patch m2:
The Long Road (I liked it, except for that it's bloody tedious, 6 turns to build a road, over a 1000 gold to build a woodcutter! BLOODY HECK!)

Stainless Steel (havn't played it much yet, and I just found out that 4.0 was released eysterday... dangnamit, now I have to download it again)

Also, I can't play RTR sicne it doesn't work for v1.6 of RTW...
Try DarthMod. It improves the AI somehow and adds more units.

That's exactly why I like RTR.

It just seemed like a siege-fest to me (especially in Greece/Italy), and I've always thougt seiges were a weak point of Total War (although RTW>MTW2 thanks to people falling of the wall).

Yeah, ladders I havn't tried in RTW yet but in M2 they are buggy still and in both sometimes your troops just can't figure out how to deal with walls.

Freaking tell me about it man. I just came on the forum a few minutes with the intent of making a new thread with my latest rants.. the biggest one being sieges!
I absolutely hate attacking large cities with large stone walls.[pissed]
I was forced into taking over Rome, because that purple diplomat had bribed my other cities that I stole from Julii on the italian peninsula at least three times. So I finally made a large enough army and laid siege to the city. The garrison wasn't even full so I thought it wouldn't be too bad, boy was I wrong. I've got 3 siege towers, two of the towers burn up before reaching the walls. Anyway I'll speed up a bit I'm not gonna give a second by second documentary on what happened. Long story short, half the guys are inside the wall, 1/4 are stuck outside having some huge gay orgy between the siege tower and the wall, and the other 1/4 is dead because of the velites and towers shooting me down. I figure screw it I'll let those idiots have their fun outside there aren't many units int he town square I can probably secure it before enemy units stationed around the city can reach. So I make a run for it, and I notice some of my units routing and I'm like what the hell is going on there aren't any enemies here. Turns out the guys outside decide they had enough fun and they want to go inside teh wall now, the thing is they aren't going through the siege towers. There is a mile long line of dead and not dead (yet) men snaking around the walls going to the gate which my spy opened even though he had a low ass chance of doing so. The line of guys going to their doom continues inside the city, snaking along the inner side of the wall now and there turns up an enemy general which I swear I didn't see while I was looking around. He has no problem mopping through everyone in their one man wide line. So I go back to my main group of units and decide forget them and I push forward and make it to the town square there is only a unit of town watchmen there so I send in a unit of spear warband thinking I won't take (m)any casualties. They must be rebellious teenagers because they refuse to take otu their spears even though the phalanx button is turned on. Before I could secure the two roads leading to the town square, a full unit of equites charges in and cleans up my rebellious spear warband. I notice taht shortly before they die they finally decide to use the spear! I end up sending whatever units I have left and defeat the equites and I'm not holding the square and wait it out. Miraculously no other enemies came back (which I think is irdiciulous that you could have a full army in the square and one enemy guy shows up and the whole countwodn is reset) I ended up losing close to a thousand guys and was only left with a bunch of 1/4 filled units. I exterminated those damn romans, and saved because there was no way I was doing that again just for the chance of it going slightly better, besides those damn diplomats were probably coming up with a plot to bribe my cities again.

Another rant, same campaign. What the hell is up with those british? They declare war on me, then a couple turns later come begging for a ceasefire. They do this repeatedly. They redeclare war a turn after the ceasefire is signed. I guess I can't really complain though I milked them out of a good pocketfull of gold from the ceasefires, and it was badly needed my german economy is very weak.

And another, in the games I have played so far I always see rome signing ceasefires with people. They refuse to sign one with me though!

Oh well, the bottom line is I hate attacking huge cities with large walls. I guess I'm going to start automatically resolving them and accept whatever losses I take. ;)

In a recent RTW battle I used ladders to test them out. They were fine.

My only problem is that two different siege weapons can't attack the same wall. Gets a bit annoying when you realise how long some of these walls are.

Do you border the British? If so, then expect to be at war with them from now on. Likely thing is the British AI realises it can't win a war with you (hence the cease-fires) but is automatically put back to war a turn later.

Works fine for me. Or can you attack a same wall if there is a gate in the middle?

Yeah, you can attack either side of the gate :)

It isn't that big a deal, as multiple units can use siege ladders/towers one by one. It's just that a couple of times I would like two siege towers right next to each other in an assault.

@Ofuh: I HATE HATE HATE towers too, the kill ALOT of troops and my troops are wall-tarded and can't capture walss, GAH.

I hate the Romans too, it's impossible to avoid war (not complaining about that too much but..) I don't like having 4 factions that work together with being allies. I once did take out the bruti early on, then recently again as the carths I didn't and when I landed an army in juli territory it was slaughtered by a neon-purple-ish pink Roman army, my elephants suffered two casaulties and ran off the map >.>

Gah. I feel better having ranted though.

Just don't get me started on Phrryus in Darth mod, that son of a goat.

Anywyas, Darthmod is teh win. I'm playing as Thrace and kicked Macedon's butt and after the Greek Cities attacked me (I was building up a new army to get them anyways) they won't last much longer. Pontus sent a (mostly Eastern infantry) army to attack Byzantine, kind of ironic, as their fleet that transported them was blocking me from reinforcing my fleets in the agean for a few turns, wish i had destroyed it then. The Dacians also lost their capital and I burnt and abandoned another one of their cities. Heh, the Romans are all my allies too!

Well, i actually like assaulting cityes with big walls. RTR made it alot more fun - not really sure why though.. I think the biggest step to make is to accept that you will suffer casaulties whatever you do, especially thanks to the missile fire while encountering the enemy wall. Its too easy to make big victories in normal hand to hand combat if you outnumber them just a bit, just make em rout and run em down with your cavalery. You will never lose as many troops to missile fire as you will when assaulting a settlement with stone walls.
Remember guys, the walls makes the settlement very easy to defend with very few troops - thats kinda why you got em. Using different siegeunits is often the key to a fast assault which means victory. A battering ram is a great way to draw enemy fire. Siege towers - yes they are powerfull but they slow down your attack way too much to stand alone. Ladders are faster but means more casaulties. Sap points.. well use em if you like em, i dont.

Having a hard time sieging? Try reconsider you strategy :) - yes you will take casaulties you cant avoid it..

Eventually i think laying a siege is way too easy to conquor a settlement. I love deffending cuz its soo easy with the right units. Just a shame the enemy so rarely attack..

I'm new to Total war, and even newer to total realism.. but I seem to have noticed a few "bad" differences when I installed total realism.. has anyone else noticed this when making the upgrade or is something else going on?

1- Units seem to run slower... I press run, and they start jogging like they are a cross country runner, not like they are a bloodthirsty savage charing at enemy lines. This kind of ties in with my second point.

2- I can't really charge enemies anymore. They just jog up to enemy lines and start engaging in hand to hand fighting while the units in the rear just wait. I want my barbarians to act barbaric again not be some slow disciplined wimps!

3- Infantry that can double as javelins refuse to melee until they are out of spears or unless the enemy engages in hand to hand combat first... so frustrating!

4- My generals seem to be falling left and right.. I used to be able to charge through an enemy flank with heavy cavalry and trample everyone.. now not only do they just engage in swordfights and not trample but it seems like the general is always one of the first guys to go, and then everyone ends up routing since I also lose the cavalry charge advantage.

5- Units are not following my orders, I will tell them to go inside a town's walls when I take down the gate. But instead, they act like they are in a military parade and set up a whole formation on the outside of the town and don't ever go inside the wall. I have to repeatedly click inside they city for them to finally get the point that I want themt o go in. This also happens when I am fighting, if I have another enemy unit coming at me from another side, I will use a unit to attack that one.. but instead they decidet hey want to continue atttackign the enemy they were attacking before. Even though they can't even reach it because they are in a hand to hand battle with another unit. This ends up in me getting my ass handed to me...

6- Buildings and units are costing more. Buildings also seem to take more turns.. come on!

7- The eternal wait at the end of each turn for each faction to make its moves... Honestly it is a killer, I am spending more time waiting for factions to play their moves than I am actually in game.

Off the top of my head these are just the things I can remember.. Has anyoen else noticed this? Is it normal? I'm th inking of just going back to regular total war. Oh well, the many new units seemed nice.. so did the new factions.. even though I guess that in itself is a problem (number 7)

1.The mod is called Total Realism, could you run like a athlete if you had more than 20kgs of armor on you?

2.If you want your units to charge properly, attack closer to the enemy lines. "What can a soldier do, when he charges without breath?" -Vegetius

3.Try attacking with Alt+click, then your units will use melee. If you attack with click they will use their missile weapons first.

4.TOTAL REALISM. A generals job is to lead, not to fight. But the General unit is good so try to use it more carefully or when you have no cavalry left.

5.As for the town walls, it is hardcoded and cannot be changed.

6.Oh come on TOTAL REALISM, Rome wasn't build in a day.:mischief:

7.I know it's SLOW and I hate it too. What are your computer specs? If you upgrade your computer it will be faster.
