This thread (AI complains on forum) has inspired me to start a SG where we play (or try to play) just like the AI plays. Our leader will be random as will our opponents and the map. Our job is to look into our Leader's soul and produce a game that matches his game exactly.

Map: Random map script shipped with 3.17 of BtS (or the latest version of it if I have that on my PC
Options: All options unchecked
Speed: Normal
Difficulty: Monarch
Size: Standard

We'll be using DM's (rip) rules:
Spoiler Etiquette Guide :

Alpha: The quality of your report outweighs the quality of your play. We’re here to have fun, and, of course, winning is fun, but losing in style is preferable to a boring win.

Bravo: Reports should be detailed, with plenty of screen shots and player commentary, explanations, musings, etc; an auto-log dump will not suffice. Shots of the F9 screens and overview shots of the empire are nice too, once in a while.

Charlie: Punctuality rocks! “24/48” means post a "got it" within 24 hours of when the last save was posted, and play within 48 hours of that ‘got it.’ Waiting 47 hours to ask for a skip is lame. Punk out two times in a row, and you’ll be dropped from the roster. Skips and swaps are fine, but try to let us know sooner, rather than later.

Delta: Major game decisions (war/peace declarations, religion swaps, city placement, etc) should be arrived at via group consensus.
1. If the team disagrees with you, either argue your case better, or do it their way. Do NOT just blow them off and do it your way because it's your turn.
2. However, if there’s no consensus and you’re up, do it your way and explain why. Conversely, if someone else is up, don't whine when they do it their way.
3. Similarly, overruling techs or city builds is rude and should be done via consensus, barring an emergency.
4. In extraordinary situations, sometimes an opportunity presents itself that the group didn't foresee. If the consequences of it are great, players should stop, and refer the question to the group.

Echo: Being a better player does not give you the right to belittle anyone else or their play. Other people are going to disagree with you on major decisions; get used to the idea, and play nice. If not, take your ball and go home.

Foxtrot: Thread spam is good. Trash talking, poking fun, gentle ribbing, virtual noogies, and generally horsing around are all encouraged, but don’t be rude.

Golf: Automate sparingly.
1. Workers should almost never be automated, except perhaps late-game or building a trade network. However, if you have to, set your game options to “disallow automated worker forest chopping” and “keep previous improvements.”
2. Use of the “Emphasis” buttons is fine, but let the group know and explain your reasoning (specialization is a major game decision). If you prevent growth in a city, let the group know and remind them to take it off. Do NOT let the governor select build orders.
3. Sending units on go-to routes that last beyond your set is acceptable only if they’re heading for a rally point or if you otherwise inform your teammates.

Hotel: NEVER fortify Great People. Is it so hard to push the spacebar 15 times??

India: Sign spamming is rude. Signs can be helpful reminders, but too many signs makes them easily ignored. Once a sign is no longer valid, delete it. [The only exception to this are city specialization signs.]

AI Play Rules / Guidelines
  • Every second build in each city must be a military unit (building science, gold or culture does not count as a built)
  • We can only select techs based on those that we can see, not by considering those further down the tech tree
  • We cannot micromanage such that events line up (ie open up Civil Service just as we finish the Oracle)
  • If the game offers a suggestion (city placement, worker action) we must give them serious considerations and (nearly always) follow that suggestion
  • We must keep track of our attitude to the other players
  • War declarations must be 'in character' (ie we hate them, they are weak and they have land we want)
  • Each player is allowed 1 human action per turn set

Set Reports
Set 1: Ruff (turns 00 to 25)

Very clever idea Ruff, wish I had the time (especially because this will probably feature very easy turnsets...aka just clicking on the blue circles).

EDIT: Advice: Swap leaders every run through the roster, and play in-character. That way you can spam units as Monty without suiciding yourself by doing it all game.

Coincidende or not, I was commenting today ( for me, yesterday, for the yankees ) in MSN with TheMeinTeam that sand-01 needed a BtS version and that i would make it my third hosted SG. This is close enough, so you can count me in, if you want :D

That SG scarred me to much to even consider joining, even though you're not going for the full pain :mischief:

Oooh how can a victim of Sand01 not be up for a repeat of the pain....

Yep I must be a masochist so sign me up...

Ralph

so - what happened with Sand1? Did some bully push you guys around or something?

They betted all their few cards in PAing Alex..... the problem is that Alex in Vanilla never makes PA :D That and the the sid's tips preference for odd unit and building queues, i guess :p

Now I remember why I have disabled every Sid's tip I can (And I probably should also remember to turn them back on for this game...) :D Based on the comments above, I'm really hoping not to regret my signup ;)

Looks like a great start btw. I think our warrior needs to take a closer look at the western hill, but settling in place looks promising.

Roster is now full - you are in RRR. I'll move the warrior SW and repost but I like settling in place. Now - how do we play him - like we imagine Napoleon, small guy with a massive chip on his shoulder, sulks a little bit but is actually pretty good with general or do we unravel the leaderhead information and play him like the AI would?

We are going to keep track of our attitude to the AIs ...

< -10 = furious
-9 to -5 = angry
-4 to +4 = cautious
+5 to +9 = pleased
> +10 = friendly

lets use the leaderhead info for sharing maps (?) and trading techs (?). One hidden attitude is '-2' because the other leaders are taller than me. Or '+2' if the leader is small (eg Gandhi).

I propose a very fitting '-2' hidden attitude "You are not french" (which explains quite well his foreign policy)...

Seriously though, I like the idea of playing like the real guy would, it's perhaps more fun than restricting ourself to what the XML says... but I am not sure it's totally your idea?

I moved the warrior ...

Will settle in place this afternoon and play first set. Any tech, build suggestions?

I like the 'you are not french' adjuster ... will use:

-1 for 'You are not French'
-1 for 'You think I am short!'
+1 for 'I am taller than you'
+1 for 'You are female - fancy a little foreign relations?'

About tech path.... beeline to cannons :p Nappy was a artillery man, after all :D
BANNED - read the rules! :mischief: Tech selection can only take into account techs that we can research ... no beelining anything!

I love being the SG leader sometimes :D:D :run:

Playing Nappy I always love to tech AH for quick chariots before BW, myst and pottery... he always seems to have horses around... Here we have cows so that would definately be my choice...
The marble out there sounds like a ticket for stonehenge (boosted monuments) oracle (for serious GP points) combo...

Now of course, if we want to play the AI way, let's start by hunting ->archery, starting by a warrior and then building scouts after hunting :goodjob:

It looks that being a SG leader sometimes makes some ppl with a dog as avatar unable to understand irony :p

Ok, if you want it tech by tech..... I think we should beeline Mining :mischief: :D
