Running out of gold

Its on Noble difficulty, and I do actually mean 800 gold. :)

Later in the game I can end up with over 1000 per turn and a substantial Army and Navy, but I only use them for defensive purposes.

I keep my cities close together, I usually have 4 or 5 shrines and I focus my specialist points into Great Merchants to use in my Wealth city. Once all of my Shrines are built, I use Great Prophets in my Wealth city. Sometimes Great Artists aswell. I tend to get 2 or 3 shrines in a single city, so that becomes my Wealth city. With Wall Street and the Wealth increasing buildings it can churn out a ton of gold. My Capital is usually my wealth city, so using Bureaucracy gives my gold output a boost.

I'm not one for wars. I just keep enough of my most advanced units along my borders to put off anyone thinking of invading. I regularly go through over 75% of a game with atleast 2 civs furious with me and no war declared.

I also get quite a few workers early on, to quickly increase populations and hook up resources. The sooner I increase the populations, the sooner I can use civilians as Merchants.

I use World Builder to scout my locations though. I don't like to put hours of work in only to find I can't cope with the environment.

While reading through the forums, I've noticed I do alot of things differently to (what seems like) most people. Works for me though. :)

If I remember, I'll get you a screenshot of my current game when I'm getting towards the end of the tech tree.

really? 1000gpt with 100% tech sliding on noble? with no gold coming from your land improvements you'd have to have one hell of a wealth city and you probably spend most of your time spreading all those religions around. I guess that's one way to do it! lol. I play aggressive AI, so I spend beakers going for military techs if I have warlike civs near my borders. I would never be able to earn 3-4 shrines without a war. That's amazing. You must post a save game! I'd like to learn this strategy.

By land improvements, do you mean cottages? Because I have alot of those around.

Trade routes provide alot of money aswell, even more so when I've got The Great Lighthouse.

As for religions, I only really spread my main religion and the second (sometimes third aswell) biggest. Thats because the other civs usually only choose from one of 3 religions. The other 4 tend to only exist as cults within the civilizations that founded them.

I'm playing Vanilla v1.52, but I've heavily modified the XML files (i'm not THAT good :D ) so you might not be able to load a save game. About 2 weeks ago I was playing a game, saved it then swapped 2 of my cities around in the XML files. When I went to load that game I got CTD every time.

About the war thing. Thats the reason I focus on gold about half of the way into the game. I use money to bribe other civs into declaring war, to keep my enemies from getting too advanced. :D

Oh, and I don't have research at 100% all the way through. Its only really when I get Currency that I can afford to keep research at 100% and still have bribe money.

Very impressive. I'm going to start a game tomorrow and try to implement this super-economy. Tonight, the lady-friend is spending the night... don't think she'd like me glued to the screen talkin' about great merchants. lol

Well thanks. :goodjob:

I bet there are other factors to my huge amount of gold. I'm still working things out. If I notice anything else I'll let you know. :)

EDIT

Properly placing Versailles and The Forbidden Palace can save a bit of money. :)
