I've not been able to even start the game because it keeps crashing at the intro -- my entire computer reboots on its own. There's no error message, it just reboots. I ran the latest patch which is supposed to fix this problem, but the crash keeps happening. I'm running at 448 MB of RAM -- is this be the reason why I'm not able to start the game?

448MB is little there days, but I don't see the intro crashing. Perhaps you should try reinstalling and applying the patch. Also, you could look into a script option to disable the intro movie (use search to find it). This might help. Best of luck!

you dont have to see the intro. you just click and you skip. simple. unless if you do click then it crashes. It might be your RAM. Check on your specs and see if it's anything else.

I'm not sure which intro the disabler disables...but my game crashes at the very first shot, where the company 2K is first introduced (a red screen). I'm on my way to Best Buy to get a new video card...but I would hate to keep spending money for upgrades when the videocard or RAM may not actually be the problem.

Check your logs ( Start > Run... > Eventvwr.msc ) for any red flags or alarms. Update all the drivers and DirectX recommended atop the "Fix-It List" thread before you spend more coin. Run a DXDIAG afterwards to check for errors.
Let us know what you find.

Given you're below minimum spec I'd recommend turning off everything non-essential anyway, especially the intro movie which I suspect is the source of this problem.

Try opening up the Civ4.ini config file and changing "nointromovie" from 0 to 1, and see if that solves the problem.
