Rushing production

Is it possible to spend gold or other resources to rush production?

I just got the game and haven't played a civ game for years. Seems like you could do this in previous versions.

It is possible to spend gold to finish production in a city, but you must be under Universal Suffrage civic. It is also possible to sacrifice some of your population to finish a production, but for that you must be running Slavery civic.
