The key thing to keep in mind it that the push for independence almost never comes from "below", from the people. It's always the would be rulers, some kind of elite (intellectuals, wealthy individuals, local political authorities, etc) who start and lead the process, for their own gain.

Thanks, that was summarized just what I failed to describe earlier. If USA will break up, it will not happen because of the rational interests if we decide it like interests of well-being of population. Leaders will lead masses for their own goals, and will present them any sorts of rational, irrational, religious, political etc reasons just to get more followers.

The main threat to USA is not crash of economy. A lot of countries experienced it more than once and survived. The main threat is ideology crash. If American beliefs will fail, it may create a path for those who will want to get more followers using uncertainity and chaos.

It is not set in stone that US will not be able to suppress such trends. USA have army, police, may introduce martial laws, labour camps etc to keep population busy during the most hard times, especially at the peak of unemployment. So, there is a hope.

I'd say the main problem was that it was largely found upon lies, blood and violence - and people just got fed up with it.

Non-viable economic and social theories forcibly revered in completely religious manner didn't help either, of course, but that would not have been a reason to dissolve a country, as you rightly pointed out.

I am agree - ideology crash was the biggest problem.

Russia has more racists than America, and they're more violent and influential. How America wins this little fight, I don't know. I fully expect them to try for no apparent reason though.

If there was a time when the U.S. might have collapsed from the "moral degradation" mentioned here and there, it would have been in the 70's. Woodstock being the Roman-colosseum-type excess that started the whole process off.

But guess what--the U.S. didn't collapse. Hence: the Russian professor's prediction (and all the predictions of U.S. downfall that were made before that Russian guy came along) are simply never going to happen.

Wrong. Russian racists are more often than not White Nationalists. Ask them, they'll tell you: "I fight for both the Slavic people and the White Race, but if forced to choose, I would choose the White Race." Many of them worship Hitler, bizarrely. They have adopted a symbol, the Orthodox Crucifix with a swastika inside, which looks pretty damn cool to be honest, and are often blessed by Orthodox priests - in a practice that is neither condoned nor condemned - for engaging in the fight.

I know this because I have met several of them, as well as followed the developments closely. I also know that the Russians have a better chance of both leading and succeeding in such a revolt.
