After worker we should start a settler and get those horses so we can start building some chariots. It won't be too long before Moscow expands again being creative. Nice to have Lizzy near by she's usually pretty good to trade with. Also I am thinking building the settler after workboat since we can only grow to 5 or 6 and unhappiness sets in. We are at 3 pop now so doing settler after WB might be good and get horses sooner. Just some thoughts...

I'll build a worker during my set and start a settler when he's done. I guess the scout will need to double back and go explore the horse region to work out where our next city should go.

I have just realised that we have barbarians off completely. I had taken it that the discussions were with regard to raging barbarians being on or off and not barbarians completely off.

I'll be able to play my turns tonight. Can't see too many reasons to slow it down for discussion until we need to work out our 2nd city site which will get the horses but we need to see the area to work out what else we can get.

I'd suggest taking the gold with the second city site. The horses are nice, but we're creative and Moscow is our Capital. I'd think we'll have the horses nearly as fast from border expansions as we will from building, moving, then settling, so we might as well grab the gold to make us happier.

edit:

OK, I just looked at the save and it looks like there aren't any food bonuses within range of the gold, though there are still a couple of unexplored tiles. OTOH there is another coastal fish near the horses, which mean at size two a four food surplus, 4 hammers, and 5 commerce (including the base city square) so maybe that is a better idea. But somehow, I know that if we don't grab the gold soon, the AI will settle on the hill to the south so we'll have a much harder time killing their archers - they always seem to do that. We may have the horses blocked off - a little more exploring will go a long way.

And one more thing, I noticed that while building the workboat we are working an unimproved cow grassland tile. My thinking is that we're better off working a plains forest to get the workboat out faster - this means more commerce sooner and more food sooner too to catch back up. I haven't run the numbers, but intuitively it seems like a much better strategy when building a workboat to maximize hammers at the expense of food. Am I on the right track here?

Mike

You make good sense and I will keep that in mind but the Workboat is only 2 turns away now so yes I agree we should have worked the forest and it will take some time getting used to not having barbarians and no defenses. I was also moving the scout defensively out of habit just in case of animals but again that's not a worry here.

I am for getting the gold soon too and since the scout has to head west again perhaps he could show the tiles in that area to see if there are any food resources. I don't think it will be long before our borders expand again and we get the horses. Does anybody know the formula for calculating when borders pop.

agree with mike regarding the fishing boat. Now take it in 1t.
Prefer second city 1 south-west to gold so we grab 6 fresh water grass to irrigate. On the other hand hills south would give us extra defence, still i prefer 1sw.
Cosmichail, you can't be serious saying you don't know when borders will pop

Asperge,

I really don't know the formula and only have played SG's for several months and never looked into it. Sure I can find the answer but I thought my teammates might enlighten me. It's not stupid to ask no matter how silly it may sound however, it feels some what condescending to get such an answer. No matter I was just wondering and I am sure it is how much culture is produced is the factor. It's not like the civpedia is easy to read on such matters.

Anyways thanks for the help and I will just find out on my own.

Yes bronze sounds good but will it matter? Won't we at some point beeline for HBR.

Thank you Soooo that is very much appreciated. Sometimes I just wonder about it but never pay much attention. There are times it's good to know though.

Cosmichail, i didn't want to insult you, i was just really surprised you didn't know that, thought maybe you was fooling us, because it's so clear left-below in the city screen . Culture 80/100, +4/turn. I really couldn't imagine somebody playing at monarch llevel and never saw that...

Ok. I've got it and will play now. 15 turns with 1 scout to move shouldn't take too long or strain my small brain too much. See you shortly.

Asperge,

It's ok I wasn't insulted and your Dutch comes across different in English and you probably didn't mean that. I actually never payed any attention to it and after sitting for a minute or two realized that it's quite simple. I do look but just didn't realize that when it reaches 100 it pops the borders or like wise at 1500 enz. That it can be measured. But truthfully it really never played much of a role in any of my games as I usually focus on expansion/military/techs. I have played on Emperor and won too in an SG which was tough in the beginning but towards in the end felt like prince because of our PA.

I am a single minded focused individual and tend to look past things that don't interest me. I just wondered earlier on and realize you didn't mean to come across that way. It's again just a language thing. I personally don't mind silly questions in my SG because hey not everybody thinks alike. I am experienced "dispatcher" and one morning I had a mental block and couldn't remember where one of the most basic streets was. (maybe too much :smoke: over the years)

I am also playing Snakes and man I just don't get it. Never played that game and always thought it was silly but now I am in a SG Snakes I keep wondering where the darn head is and the tail. All I want to do is play.

(0)-3200BC - I start by rearranging Moscow to be Nocow and get the workboat in 1 turn.

(4)-3040BC - We meet Louis. I am sure I took a screenshot. Don't ya hate that when they don't work. Doesn't really matter as I'm sure you've all seen Louey's ugly mug before.

The gold site has some wheat as well so it has some merit.

(5)-3000BC - The wheel is done and Moscows borders pop on schedule.

I had a bit of a ponder on what to research next. I contemplate HBR but we need archery as well to get the horse archer and that will take a long time. Chariots will have to do for now. Bronze working is only worth it due to chops and the whip which are quite useful but we need to get a settler and worker out first anyway. So I go for Pottery as it's not going to take to long and it'll give us granaries and cottages.

(6)-2960BC - Hinduism is FiaDL.

(9)-2840BC - I manage to pop Archery from a hut :woohoo:

Civ4ScreenShot0247.jpg

(10)-2800BC - The worker is complete. I will allow a few turns to go into the barracks that's queued up to let the city grow out to size 4 before doing a settler and stagnating again.

(12)-2720BC - No-one told Sid the variant rules.

Civ4ScreenShot0248.jpg

(13)-2680BC - Pottery comes in and now that we've got archery I go for HBR.

Start a settler now as Moscow has grown to size 4.

(14)-2640BC - Cows farmed and I send the worker towards the horses.

(15)-2600BC - I guess I could have farmed the horses before the cows but I think with no barbs and no open borders for spies we should be safe for now. The horses can be farmed and roaded in about 10 turns I guess and by then we should have a 2nd city up. Here's some maps for working out where we should put our next few cities.

Here's the save:

Nice Kikinit getting that archery.....and soon horse archers. At least we will have some offensive capability. Doesn't it feel strange without the barbs though. Almost like cheating. I am sure we will have our challenge with Louis there man is that guy a backstabber all the time. One minute pleased next hey you it's war. That's happened more than once so boy let's get that guy first. He is really annoying.

Asperge said:

Of course, that extra 25% of zero won't amount to much.;)

Anyway, with the wheat on a river we still should definitely settle the gold next. I suggest 1N of the wheat, we'll be on the plains hill for an extra hammer, can start working the wheat right away, and once we get it irrigated we can work the gold too and still have a big food surplus.

It's a shame we can't reach the fish and clams with just one city. Should we forget about one, or try to cram two cities into the northeast peninsula?

Mike that means you're up. I agree it's a shame that we can't get both sea resources and concur on the gold settlement.

Mike is up for 15.

Cosmichail (20 turns) - Found the horses
Kikinit (15 turns) - Just Played
mike p (15 turns) - UP
Asperge (10 turns from here onwards) - On Deck, wants to attack Cyrus already

sooooo

I think we should get BW (and agriculture) before HBR. There's plenty of fertile land out there an we need to claim it pronto. There are forests inside our cultural border but outside the BFC that can be chopped, and a forest on the hill inside the capital. We need to chop out some settlers and another worker. Now we have both food resources improved, I'm tempted to say whip the settler asap.

1N of the wheat is fine, but how about 1SW of the gold? That would have 6 (!) hills and 6 farmable grassland (including wheat), for a production monstrosity. EDIT: This is what Asperge said too :)

The capital is production poor and should be cottaged IMO.

Soooo

That even sounds better for gold settlement and was going to take a look at the save to see. Asparagus suggested that gee I missed that. Well a good idea and be popping horsies like candies with that production.
