S-05 Beat the Clock

Another argument in favour of Maths next is to increase the chop yield for the Great Lighthouse. I'm sure we'll want to chop-mine that hill-forest and maybe clear one or two of the plains-forests. This argument is only valid, of course, if we can complete Maths before our GL target date.

I don't think it's a question of do we want maths now, it's a question of will we be able to trade for maths once we research alphabet.
I'd disagree slightly and say the question is what are the pros and cons of Maths next versus Alpha next in the context of our game. I'm not one for researching Maths in a normal game, but I think the situation in this game might make it stronger play than it would be ordinarily.

One of the main benefits of researching Alpha is to trade for Maths soon after completing the former, but it's not certain whether we'll be able to do so. If Mansa was around, or if we had a close (religious) friend, I might risk it, but in the few games where I've planned to trade Maths in the early-ish BCs (for a cat/hwacha attack) I've tended to find it redlined, delaying my attack. This latter statement is a 'feeling' rather than a certainty, but in this game we don't have the option of delaying our war declaration (and I wouldn't want to declare on Rome without having the force to back it up).

Finally, if you have access to the game, can you give an idea of the timelines involved for each option (assuming an instant trade for Maths).

lurker's comment: great game so far, if some one would be kind enough to post a clock with the civs on it that would be much appreciated

Mmmkay, I change research to mathematics. We have a slight barb-infestation here:

The result of pressing enter is:

Axeman finishes, start The Great Lighthouse.

When micromanaged for production, Carthage was due to build it in 19 turns. That was reduced by 2 chops, but some of the time its defender had to leave the city to kill potential pillagers and some production was lost. We built it in 805 AD.

Carthage started on a barracks after that. Utica whipped its granary at size 4 and put overflow into a settler, due in 7. I am camping the deers to increase the hapiness cap to time for when Carthage grows again.

Yeah I'll update the clock soon.

We built it in 805 AD.
:mischief: umm... BC? ;)

That spot looks fine, well, perhaps not fine, but good enough for resources and low maintenance. Agree with the trireme, also.

Not the most exciting 15 ever...but we're getting there.

T0 - Switch to a Library at Carthage.
T1 - Whip Library and Settler. IBT - Archer shows up SW of Carthage. Nice timing.
T2 - start Axe in Carthage. IBT Archer closes in.
T3 - Dilemma: our shock axe has 3.8 health so should win, but I lost a healthy war chariot to a barb warrior the other day, so I decide to play safe and 1 pop whip another axe just in case. IBT - Archer attacks our injured axe who had moved to confront him. Axe wins.

That's it for excitement. Oracle BIFAL and founded Hadrumetum turn 5.

Defeated an archer out to the east. Built a workboat - not a trieme - and it's off west exploring, so far only another possible city site but no trade routes yet.

Imageshack's playing up so no screenshots. One worker is building a mine for Carthage and Hadremetum to share, the other has just roaded the deer (I think) at H. There's an axe two tiles from either city in case of barbs from either direction.

Construction in two, coinciding with a barracks. Carthage and Utica are working off whip anger. We're last in military, of course, but we'll soon show them, eh...

Sweetachshon is UP now for 15. Alphabet next methinks. Good call about the workboat - less hammers than trireme. Hope he doesn't meet any barbarian ships.

Looked at the save and have a few mm tips for the next player.

Carthage has suffered a lot of whipping and does not yet have a granary. We gotta work the deer and lake here btw instead of the silver and copper - brings growth down to 1 and then next turn our extra citizen works copper. Don't think the whip of the library was wise in a city without granary. Carthage was high production at size 8, no need to whip just reconfigure city. Our worker is building a mine that will basically never get worked - instead it would be better building a cottage on the grassland south of Utica. EDIT: OK, as Swiss says Hadremetum can use that mine

Hmm.. I'm not sure how well I played this one. I pretty much focused on rebuilding the population and getting some of the basic buildings into place, which might be helpful to whip this army together. We have about 20 turns to get something in order, and try to get a settler or 2 in there somewhere.

Roos built both the Great Wall and ToA in this TS. He will be a beast by the time we get to him, I think.

I built a scout which is in Roman lands, and the wb is on the far side of America. Rome has 8-9 cities, so this will be tough. I started IW, but didn't mean to put any beakers toward it, as we can trade for it, as well as archery, meditation, and probably other religious techs as well, if we space it out.

Plans: Tech trade, build an army (whip?), get a settler out, one worker is roading to the furs, for trading, the other was heading to Utica's grass for cottaging.

I think Rome having so many cities isn't too bad: his military will be spread out across the cities.

I doubt I'll be up, but I'mm OOP til Sunday.

I should be able to 'get it' and probably play as well tonight.
I intend to only build units so that we can push Rome as best as possible. Any other thoughts?

Pray that Augustus doesn't have iron.

Seriously, I can't think of anything remarkable. The first big push is coming, so let's gear up.

I use microsoft works word processor to write up my report and it crashed as soon as i try to copy and paste it here. Obviously i am quite upset about it, so i will recount the details as best as i could.

Here's a look at our empire at the end of my turn-set. Notice the roman iron.

In terms of city builds:
Carthage's whip unhappiness wore off shortly into my turnset and it was forced to grow until it reached its new happiness limit (size 8) then focused on hammers. It built a granary and started a catapult. it can build catapults in 3 turns.
Utica finished a granary and started on a catapult. Unfortunately, it had 2 points of whip unhappiness so i didn't whip it at all, let it grow to its new happiness limit and then set it to focus on hammers and commerce. At this point, i could render it food-stagnant by assigning two citizens, so i made them librarians.
The third city (forget the name) whipped a granary and started a lighthouse.

In terms of research:
We traded math away to the spanish and the arabs for mysticism, archery, polytheism and meditation. We also finished iron-working and started on metal-casting for both happiness from forges and a route to engineering and trebuchets which may be required against these pretorians.

In terms of foreign relations:
Most of the AI are very pleased with each other. The two religious blocks are Saladin and Ragnar (buddhist) and Isabella (Hindu) (i could have that backwards- this is from memory). Victoria assumed heriditary rule suggesting she has the monarchy tech. We are also bringing in foreign trade routes worth between 2 and 3 commerce per turn (3 per city due to GLH)

Scouting and Battle Plans
We only have one serious production city. I suspect we will need to whip Utica and the third city until our hands bleed to get any sort of army out of them. Rome does indeed have iron and has started to produce praetorians. They are cottaging up all their tiles though, so at least we won't have to face a huge production power-house. Also, the iron is on the edge of our mutual territory (See screenshot), so we should be able to grab it.

Well, thats all i can remember of my game. I am still upset with my word processor.

Here is the save.
