About this strategy

This strategy is still a work in progress. I've played some games. I haven't tested everything I write here. I have make few changes on the Tech Path, for example, because I lost the Great Library in my last game. Any comments are welcome.

Goals

I've been trying to put a strategy for Saladin/Vanilla together, Monarch level. I really don't care if it will not work on Emperor and above. The motto is “Show the Unfaithful the Power of Religion”. The goal is to build three Wonders: Angkor Wat, The Spiral Minaret and The Statue of Liberty. Every cheap temple of my state religion could have a priest, so I would have :gold: :gold: :hammers: :hammers: :culture: :) :science: :science: :science: with Representation. Add a Shrine, and the :gold: will be even greater. This is good to build infrastructure in cities you have just taken from the enemy.

Victory type: diplo or space race after getting one continent for myself.

Problems

I really don't like the starting techs from Saladin. I find a hard leader to play with at the begging of the game. I have chosen no early rush, so I could build more early wonders and then go for war. I choose continents/standard/low sea level. The barbs are really a pain but I can expand and build 4 - 5 cities.

Tech Path

I usually get many techs from trade.

Polytheism - Agriculture - AH - Mining - BW - Pottery

I usually build my second city near copper. I usually go for Mining - BW ASAP. But I thing Chariots are better against barbs even on Vanilla. With barracks I can give them Flanking promotion, then sentry. I'll be able to fog bust with fewer units. I'll build Stonehenge for the GP points and the culture. Polytheism is better then Meditation because it is in the tech path to Literature.

Writing - Alphabet - Literature

Great Library. Do I need to explain? ;)

Math (trade/research) - Music

If I think I can win the Music race for the free Great Artist.

Meditation - Code of Laws - Civil Service (lightbulb) - Philosophy (lighbulb)

When I put lightbulb means I don't start researching the tech until I have the Great Person. Great Prophet for Civil Service and Great Scientist for Philosophy. The only point really :smoke: is that shall I have Marble I cannot research Masonry. Once I have Philosophy, I can build Angor Walt.

Mansory - Monetheism (Organized Religion) - Monarchy (Hereditary Rule) - Metal Casting - Machinery
I might get some techs through trade. I'll have Maceman. If I need I research Construction. War Time. I will be building Axeman/Swordsman, then I upgrade them into Maceman.I may not have money for all of them, but I'll have at least a mixed army.

Paper - Education (lightbulb) - Drama (trade) - Nationalism (lightbulb) - Liberalism - Constituition (free tech)
In my last game I got Literature too late and lost the Great Library (I delayed Literature too much). I still was the first for Liberalism and got one Great Scientist for Education. I got Nationalism as free tech. With help of the Great Artist, I think I can get Constitution and run Representation.

I think hard to plan the tech path from now on. Some points:
  • Guilds / Banking - If I have a Shrine, a Grocery and a Bank are welcome. Mercantilism and Representation make a good combo.
  • Cavalary and Grenadiers - Which should I get first? :dunno: I'm thinking of getting Cavalary, so I can put my Maceman to fight a little more and get those CR3 Grenadiers.
  • Democracy - I think I should wait a little before research it. I think at least one military tech.
  • Divine Right - I can Lightbulb. With Angor Wat it's easy to get Great Prophets.

Great People
Below is how I'm planning to use the Great People:
Great Scientist
1 - Philosophy
2 - Education
3 - Academy
4 - Printing Press

Great Prophet
1 - Civil Service
2 - Shrine
3 - Divine Right

Great Artist (first to Music)
1 - Nationalism

Other Points
I try to keep my GP pool clean. One for Scientists, another for Priests. I can control the Great People better.

Sounds like a good idea for a succession game.

I guess you could do something similar with Gandhi in Warlords. You would have a problem with the CoL/CS slingshot of course. On the other hand if you've got marble you've a much better chance of getting the Wonders.

I haven't thought about a succession game but I think it's a great idea. If more people like the idea, I'll open a new thread in the Succession Games forum. Before I do that, I'd like to know if the motto is correct. I mean, English isn't my first language.

The marble would make the Great Library easier to get. We could have a plan B. Early Civil Service and Maceman are cool. Pigswill, you are right about Gandhi, but I don't have Warlords.
