Save Game - Names not auto filled

Hey Everyone,

I was wondering if people are seeing the same behavior I am. When I attempt to save my game, it does not auto-fill leader/year for the save game name as it did in Civ 4. This is actually quite annoying for a save-baby like me.

1.) Is anyone else seeing the same behavior?

2.) Anyone have a good workaround (perhaps just trust auto-save with some decent history length)?

I have noticed this as well, and I was also annoyed. I have to name my own save games? What is this, 1992?

Not sure if there's a setting to check somewhere or something.

Also, regarding this issue, I cannot save locally at all even if I enter a custom game name. It will only save to steamcloud.

My games are being stored locally in C:\Documents and Settings\(username)\My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\Saves\single. I also have to create a savefile name.

ETA: The lack of a default save name appears to be a bug. Here is an extract from p. 13 of the (English) manual:

The Save Game Screen
Click on “Save” to save the game with the default name. Or you can give the save a new
name: simply type it over the default and then click “Save.” The game will be saved and
you’ll be returned to your game in progress.

yeeeeah.

When I create a filename and hit save, nothing happens. The game does not appear on the local list. Also when I go to load in-game it isn't there.

My game saves to my pc, I dont know if it saves to steam cloud too though? I just clicked save game, entered my title, and its in my documents\my games\sid meiers civilization 5

Let me do some further testing / checking then. If it's working for you guys then it's probably something on my end.

I am finding that this is intermittent ... first it would not allow me to type a name, nor complete a local save (other than quick save or save to cloud) Later, I typed a name and got a save, that I can find and load. After that, I can type a name but it does not save.

Color me disappointed as well that Civ5 is not at least suggesting a default name for the save like it did in Civ4. It should follow the same pattern as Civ4's names, which everyone was used to.

(Then there's the weirdness in the text box if you try to edit what you type in.)

Same crap for me :(
Can't save locally, is it because I didn't install it on C: drive?

OK, today it is even more strange ... I go to save to local, I can type in a name but it won't save. However, I can overwrite the one save that did go though a few days ago with the current save !!??

I will test this further by copying in some dummy save files ... it seems that I can save locally if overwritting, but not if initially writing ... :crazyeye:

I wish it would also store the date and time and be able to sort the save based on such.

Yes, if I stock the save folder with "dummy saves", can then save games by overwriting the dummy saves. But I can't generage a completely new save by typing a name and hitting save.

Yeah, don't know how Firaxis can make a save system in V that loses the best functionality of saves in IV.

My complaints with V so far are not gameplay and game mechanics, but lost or cumbersome functionality of making things happen.

The whole "load game" "save game" UIs are horrid... centering text that is highly varied in length makes it very difficult to read. They need to adjust it so that:

- The filename is left-aligned along the left edge of the list
- The date of the save is right-alinged along the right edge of the list

Then let us sort by either column.

Yeah, that's the part I don't understand. They have the Save Game code from IV, why did they feel they needed to redo it? I understand adding in Steam Cloud but not making it something that functions worse than Civ2.

Exactly the same with me. Can use only the first save slot to overwrite.

It now seems that saves are working more normally for me, I can type into the box and make a new save with the name I typed. This could be the result of a recent update, so if you have not logged into Steam lately, there may be an update out there to fix this for you.

Some have said that when save opens, if you click in the name box to remove the initial cursor, then click again to get a new cursor, that the saves work then. I don't seem to have to do that now, but it may have been a pre-fix workaround.
