Scariest being in a nightmare you saw?

Just a thread about specific sightings in nightmares. I dislike RD, so this won't be RD'ed, but try to keep the spam on less than a monstrous level :)

As for my own, here are some from different eras, elementary school and onwards:

-A human who effectively grows a new head, with the previous one being ejected as if it was part of a used-up chrysalis.

-A portal in the sky, from which alien spacecraft appeared, in some sort of invasion.

-A child which was in reality a praying-mantis, and got accidentally killed.

My scariest (for myself) nightmare was seen in mid elementary school, and involved a dark and seemingly endless space, where i was summoned by a flying wheel with 8 or 9 parts, which had in its defining points the fixed heads of animals (eg a lion), and was moving in the manner of a circus wheel. It appeared to be either some deity, or the spokesman/sentinel of a deity, and one of the animals spoke, at which point i could not handle the pressure in the dream and woke up.

All sorts of spectres and haunting undead gaining slow awareness of my presence. I had some lousy dreams as a kid.

I had a dream with a giant terrifying slaad a couple years ago, but that was more cool than anything else.

I read that as "giant terrifying salad". Which is an interesting image.

Dreams I had while experiencing sleep paralysis were probably the scariest I've had. The scariest was one time when I was about 16. In the dream I came across an aging, chubby woman who in another dream would've just been weird or mildly annoying at worst, but due to the sleep paralysis there was just something so eerie and terrifying about her presence - if I remember correctly she somehow turned into an ominous being of some sort, but it forgot that part of the dream. It probably also didn't help that due to the sleep paralysis (I think) my house - where the dream took place - seemed like some dark satanic building with unnatural demonic red lighting (a bit akin to House of Dagoth shenanigans in Morrowind for those who know about that).

I've only had a very few cases of sleep paralysis but that was probably the most terrifying.

I actually have a lot of dreams where I'm chased by something, but I usually forget those.

Second most terrifying would probably be the time Cho Seng Hui (or however it's spelled), one of those shooting spree murderers, was killing everyone in my dream and he eventually killed me with a bullet to the back of my head. Oddly I was very peaceful once I was "dying" (and woke up a few seconds later), having accepted my fate, but there was much horror beforehand.

That image in the first post is creepy. In a hair-raising-on-back-of-the-neck sort of creepy way. Distinctly humanoid, and yet distinctly grotesque and... other... at the same time. I can definitely see the speaking circus wheel with animals being freaky in a dream, as well.

The two nightmares that come to mind for me are both from when I was fairly young, 10 years old or less. The first was one where there was a giant (about 9 foot/3 meters tall) centipede in my parents' backyard that was chasing me. We got them in the house occasionally, in regular size, and though they weren't really a threat, I'd never liked them. Well, this giant one was chasing me in my parents' back yard, and I ran down the steps to the slightly-below-ground level entrance to the house, but the door was locked, and it had me cornered with no escape. It was at that point that I woke up.

The second was not a single dream, but a recurring character in dreams from time to time. That was a driverless, but distinctly moving, and sometimes sentient, van (think late '80s Ford or Dodge passenger vans). Sometimes it would be driving around the streets in my neighborhood, at least once down the hallways of my elementary school. The spectre of the driverless, but distinctly thinking and non-friendly van was always unsettling, although it was less terrifying than the giant centipede.

Centipedes and Milepedes just have an interesting form :) Afaik the large milepedes have their many legs move in a sort of natural wave pattern, which is quite cool..

The image in the OP is by Asya Yordanova, a cool female painter in DeviantArt.

I'm feeling creeped out just thinking about that.

I have an intuitive understanding of what Plato meant by shadows on a cave wall (In this case a bedroom wall while having my head and upper body pulled up from the pillow to look at it).

The paralysis/restraint bears resemblance to another dream in which a cloud of small people-shaped silhouettes was floating throughout the house and I decided to take a closer look.

Yeah. Let's hope Google doesn't accidentally cause this with their self-driving car experiments. Back when I had nightmares of it, driverless cars weren't even a thing yet.

The day cars became sentient...

The creepiness factor for me when you mentioned it above wasn't that it was sentient, or that it was moving on its own, but the great uncertainty behind such a thing. Sort of the whole idea behind the uncanny valley theory and what not.
