This idea was started in the Overrated game thread.

What game do you think is the scariest? I'd have to go with System Shock 2. Doom 2 (when I first played it long ago) was also pretty scary. Aliens Vs. Predator (the first one) was also tremendously scary, but I think I must go with System Shock 2.

I had nightmares on the music from Diablo 1 - I was 9 years old i think.
Also when i was little i remember geting scared by the crocodiles from Tomb Raider :) - they make a REALLY strange sound when they walk.
Heey don't laugh i was little. :p

But Clive Barker's Undying is the scarriest.

Scariest game?Deer Hunter no doubt.

I say The Suffering is the scariest. The first level nearly made me crap myself the first time I played it, and the asylum level was just too creepy.

I would say Phantasmagoria. Even though, it was an "interactive movie" and on 7 CD's, gore and rape and violence were pretty scary to me back then.

I dunno, for some reason Castlevania 64 creeped me out a few times...probably those moments when a vampire would just jump out and start sucking your blood.

hah hah, yes, and the random things like your head exploding when your sanity meter went to far down....

or the game pretending to erase your memory...those bastardos.

So many good memories there. The sanity meter, that was a new twist. Kudos to Silicon Knights.

I don't play many scary games....but from the ones I did play:

Half life was kinda scary I played it when I was 9 and the music + zombies eating people creeped me out. Doom 3's combination of sounds and light is scary too

Well, the one game I remember that actually made me feel uneasy (or at least weary of the prospect of running in another monster) was Doom 3. Really, the confined space, the poisonous environments, the monsters creeping from unexpected places, and the always scary zombies....

Then you should meet Undying's Howlers - you can always hear their howl in that mansion, you never feel safe, and they have this strange Mimic-like sound when they walk (Mimic the movie), and their howls have a strange echo that don't give away their position to clearly and it only confuses you . And they have this leap-atack and when they hit you the camera tilts suddenly and you ALWAYS end up shooting randomly. The only way to avoid this is to have a REALLY steady hand and perfect timing because the howlers do not "walk" they hop :) untill they get to about 8 meters distance from you, from which they can make their leap atack. It is VERY hard to hit them if they made their leap and even when they hop, you must shoot them when they touch the ground - that is the only way(and they only touch it for about a second).
Or you could always run like hell and pray that they will miss you in their leap atack in which case you will have several seconds to shoot him in which case the howler recovers from his atack .
And in the mansion & monastery parts of the game there is always this obsession "I MUST see them first, i must HEAR them." And it is ALWAYS dark in the game - there is always a dark corner somewhere where he could hide, there is always a celing on which you didn't look and might hide a howler, and you always remember that if you miss 6 shots then you are dead (the revolver has to be reloaded - and that takes time - time you don't have).

The first Alien vs Predator for me. In the dark as the marine, those Aliens came out of nowhere. Not to mention the excellent enemy detectors - a scanner that tells you they're coming but you can't see them, or night-vision that lets you see them a split second before they appear, but puts the scanner out of action.

Oh yeah I remember that one,in the police station when Nemesis jumps in through the window when your going down the stairs was an OH HOLY CRAP situation for me...

I have gotten spooked a few times (especialy when dungeon crawling) on Morrowind, Half-Life 1 was a little creepy. Call of Duty: United Offensive multi has spooked me (namely when I didn't hear someone sneak up on me and I often don't see the grenade until just before it explodes).
Nothing really scary though.
