Scenario Preview: 2nd American Civil War

The day is July 3rd, 2008. President Bush is assasinated by neo-Confederates outside his ranch in Texas. The next day, Dick Cheney declares himself Dictator. The already unstable state of California declares it's independance from the Union. The Bear Flag Republic led by Cruz Bustamante is soon topled by Democratic Socialists and their Chinese friends in the North and by Bill Simons and his religous zealots in the South. Texas follows California and declares it's independance on July 11th. The other 11 states of the former Confederacy declare their independance the following day and create the Confederate States of America.
The Sides:
United States:
Dificulty: Easy
Government: Corprate Dictatorship
Large Cities: Washington, Boston and New York
Capital: Washington
The United States starts out with a large Army, but do to overspending, it will be hard for them to build more units. However, the units they do start out with are Modern Armor and Mech Infantry, but no civ, including the USA, can build any more. Britain has sent some infantry to defend the capital of Washington, DC.
Confederate States:
Difficulty: Medium-Easy
Government: Confederacy
Large Cities: Atlanta, Richmond, Newport News
Capital: Richmond
The Confederate States starts out with a lot of low-tech KKK Knights. However, due to their lack of technolegy, they will be unable to build some of the units that the other Civ's can build. Unlike the first Confederacy, this new Confederacy has outlawed slavery.

Difficulty: Hard
Government: Social Democracy
Large Cities: San Francisco, Sacramento, Los Angeles
Capital: San Francisco
Northern California, officially called the People's Republic of California, is ruled by Chairman John Christopher Burton. The Social Democracy is backed by China, who deploys Marines along the California Coast. The Socialists gained support in the non-valley parts in the North by "declaring homosexuals to have equal rights" and by legalizing Gay Marriage and adopting the 1st Ammendment of the US Constituion into their own.
Southern California:
Difficulty: Medium-hard
Government: Fundamentalism
Large Cities: San Diego
Capital: San Diego
After the fall of the short-lived Bear Flag Republic in August 2008, Bill Simons, failed gubernatoreal candidate, rallies Christains from San Diego to take control of Southern California. He declares himself Dictator of the California Christain Republic, and in his mission to spread Christain law throughout North America, he declares war on the United Western States and on Mexico. The Peoples Republic of California to the north declares war on Southern California and with the help of their Chinese allies, take Los Angeles.
Midwestern Coalition:

Government: Democracy
Large Cities: Denver, Seattle, Portland
Capital: Seattle
Large portions of the non-coastal West remain unpopulated to this day. However, there is an edvantage to this. Due to blistering hot summers in the South West and Nevada, it will be very hard to invade from these areas(Deserts have a defensive bonus). And Oregon, with it's mountainous border with the People's Republic of California is prime defensive positioning. The main problem is that except for a few cities, there are hundreds of miles of unpopulated desert, so it'll be hard to make a real army. But the USW has signed a Mutual Protection Pact with the People's Republic of California and Mexico, making an attack on one an attack against all.

Difficulty: Medium
Government: Democracy
Large Cities: Mexico City, Tijuana
Capital: Mexico City
The newly elected president of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, Ernest Zedillo, has recognized Texas and Southern Californian independence. However, the day after the recognitions, the United Mexican States declared war on the Republic of Texas and on Southern California. He wishes to, "Unite the Mexican Nation under one country." By this, he means that he wants to take over all parts of the US with a lot of Mexican culture. France and Russia have contributed troops to Mexico, including a few Modern Armors.

Great idea, I'd play this scenario.

The Klan, though, doesn't really play much of a part these days, and considering the ethnic makeup of the modern South (think Georgia), there would have to be massive setbacks to that unit. For example, requiring a wonder (maybe built-in at start) that makes three people unhappy in the city.

Unless you're not doing a realistic scenario, and are more interested in caricature or gameplay; in which case, disregard this post.

Hey all,

The modern day South containes most of the USA's present military (the land was cheap during WWII) to include half the Army, a quarter of the Airforce, and half the Navy. It holds two of the countries three major Naval Shipyards (Newport News VA, and Bath Iron Works MS) one of Lockhead Martins largest facilities (they make aircraft and misiles there in AL), half the Navy's ballistic missile subs (King's Bay, GA), both the Navy and Airforce Flight Schools (NAS Pensacola, Eglin AFB, Corpus Cristi NAS), the largest military industrial complex and base in the world at Norfolk VA (to include Portsmouth and Norfolk naval shipyards, Norfolk Naval Base, NAS Norfolk, NAS Oceana, Dam Neck training base, Little Creek Amphibious base, Yorktown Naval Weapons Station, Langley AFB, Fort Story, Fort Eustis, Quantico Marine Base, Joint Staff College, and several smaller installations), Half the Marine Corps at Quantico, Lejume, Cherry Point, and Paris Island, Another Carrier Battle Group at Jacksonville FL (to add to the four in Norfolk), as well as myraid other assets.

In short, and I am not saying this because of any Southern bias, the South would be the best armed and trained faction in this scenario, and would actually be the only one able to support or build more of them (especially as far as the Navy is concerned, except subs at Groton, but Newport News can build them too). California is too split up, and the North would have no resources.

And if you don't agree with my assesment, the Russians had Norfolk as the number two nuclear target behind DC, before NYC LA and Chi town. They knew what was important to hit.

Yes most of our military is based down there, including Marine bases none up here in Maine, but how many of those based there would be loyal to the south?

That's a good point about the bases... I undertstand that the South has since WWI contributed a disproportionate number of soldiers to the US army, too, come to think of it.

being as about 80 pct of the officer corps in the US military atm is from the state of Texas and Texas has a tremendous loyalty to the state i think that there would be a major military build up there plus it has been said by several US general's that Texans are the best troops in various US armies. I feel Texas should get a very very healthy proportion of the military and the North btw would have very little i think and the CSA would have a slightly lesser number than Texas and then California should be able to be overrun in the 1st one or 2 turns (no offense just my analysis)

that's why there are Partisans outside of L.A. anyway, the Chridtian Dictatorship isn't very polular. mostly supported by people in the Valley.

BTW, i've decided that Mexico will not control New Mexico and Arixona at the start of the war. Texas may also be part of the USA. both Californias will have lots of Infantry due to large population, and the People's Republic of California(the North) will have their capital in San Francisco instead of Sacramento.

Trust me when I say this, 80% of the US officer corps as a whole or from any service in particular is not from Texas, not even ten percent (I am a Navy Officer Recruiter and Virginia is #1), though they are alot from Texas, maybe 5-7%, which out of 50 states isn't bad.

Gentlemen As i am a Marine i can guarantee that the UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS bases in California and North Carolina would not under any circumstances revolt against the United States. The U.S.M.C. is the only service that has NEVER participated in a mutiny or revolt against the U.S. Also in a study done by the GRU ( soviet military intelligence) that if some how they controlled the U.S. they would have to "liquidate" 20% of the Army, Navy, and Air Force officer corps and enlisted personnel. They also stated that they would have to "liquidate 100% of all MARINE officers and enlisted personnel, "because they are to well trained and motivated in the capatilist doctrine to be reeducated while the rest of the services were reeducatable. I would like to see the force capable of evicting a full Marine division from where it wanted to go.
Hence our motto "SEMPER FIDELIS" always faithful. Some of us Marines have another saying, "SAEPIUS EXERTUS, SEMPER FIDELIS, FRATER INFINITAS," often tested, always faithful, brothers forever.

As a Californian, up to the point where it became clear that we couldn't govern ourselves, we sometimes talked about seceding from the Union, and it was usually a given in these discussions that Washington, and maybe even Oregon would join us. They'd at least be more likely to join up w/ CA than Utah...

Also, while it's definitely true that a large proportion of the military, particularly the Army, is Southern, we should look at what the reason is: The south is the poorest region in the country, and the military offers some social mobility to those who join. It's been said that the rest of the country subsidizes the South through the military. So, yes, the South should have the largest military, but it also shouldn't be able to support it long without becoming absolutely bankrupt. The same should probably be true with its improvements too. So the sum of it is, the South should definitely be in a bad economic situation, while the US and the Californias would be in the opposite position.

thats why this is a fictional scenario. would they revolt if Cheney became dictator and abolished the constitution?

Due to a lot of school work, don't expect this scenario to come out until November 14th, but i'll still try to get version 1 out by November 1st.

L.A. is part of northern California. N. California starts out with a Great Leader in L.A. named Martin Sheen(father-in-law of the best actress ever, Denise Richards).

Sims if Cheney became president the Corps would still support the UNited States. We are also called the "President's own". So to Answer your question no they would not and if the military was splintered like you say i can guarantee you that Your leader in California would be on the run within 2 hours of the 1st Marine Division getting the call from the President. Also one thing you should understand is the Marines also have 3 complete air wings dedicated to the Divisions and i do not think that an Air force Tactical Fighter Wing could stand up to a Marine Air Wing. What i am saying is that if you want your scenario to be plausible you would have to somehow neutralize the ENTIRE MARINE CORPS!!. Good luck coming up with that fantasy.

i mean Dictator, not President. if Cheney was an elected official, of course the Marines would support him. i do not want this scenario to carry my ultra-liberal views with it. the 1st and 3rd Marine Divisions will be in Iraq(basically out of the game) but the 2nd one will be in North Carolina and be loyal to the USA(as well as the cities they are based in).

BTW, i do not want California to be it's own nation, but i would support a revolution if and only if the United States bans any part of the 1st, 13th or the ammendment letting women(aka, i would not be to happy if women couldn't vote, if we legalized slavery or if Freedom of Speech/Religion/Press/Assembly ect. is repealed).
