which is pretty interesting.

Lots of things in nature use that ratio too (DaVinci's bloke standing in a circle, position of facial features, etc.).

I could look up the actual details of the theorem, but that would be cheating. As for what it has to do with dropping a map of the earth on the floor, that would be that some point on the map will be in exactly the same spot as the place it represents. Which doesn't actually help me with the details of the theorem.

I hope he didn't win a prize for that observation.

That only works for A4 paper series... not the 8-1/2 x 11 that is standard in the US

Sheets of paper are sqrt(2):1, not phi:1. If the ratio was phi:1, then what you suggest wouldn't work.

If you remove a square from one end, the resulting rectangle is in the same ratio as the original one.
