You forgot that 1/phi = phi - 1

which is pretty interesting.

Lots of things in nature use that ratio too (DaVinci's bloke standing in a circle, position of facial features, etc.).

The more your features correlate to phi the more attractive most people think you are ;)

I could look up the actual details of the theorem, but that would be cheating. As for what it has to do with dropping a map of the earth on the floor, that would be that some point on the map will be in exactly the same spot as the place it represents. Which doesn't actually help me with the details of the theorem.

I hope he didn't win a prize for that observation.

Which is about 0.60 What's so great about that ratio? :)

Hmmm... you lads know too much mathematics! ;)

All mathematicians should hereby post their highest degree... :mischief:

Just a BSc HONS (Mathematics) for me, and only a Desmond (2:2).

Well sizes of sheets of paper use it so it must be great! (If you fold it in half you get the next smaller paper size).

When I was in school I was told that phi was used as a ratio in TV screens and paper because it's so "beautiful"

It's a number that mathematicians have, it represents the degree of separation from Erdos via joint authorships

IE:

Erdos has 0

Someone who has coauthored with Erdos has 1
Someone who has coauthored with someone who has coauthored with Erdos (but has not coauthored with Erdos) has 2
Someone who has coauthored with someone who has coauthored with someone who has coauthored with Erdos (but has not coauthored with someone who has coauthored with Erdos or Erdos himself) has 3
ETC.

Give me a two-word term showing why the 1918 flu pandemic strain killed young adults with such ferocity. A brief explanation can't hurt.
