I know you get them for having a tech lead but how big of a lead? What other reasons do you get them for. I have only gotten one in 2 months playing about 6 hours a day so that is a lot of time i have spent and have only gotten one.

1. Be the 1st civ to research a tech(it can be any tech).
2. 3% chance if non-scientific civ or 5% chance if scientific civ.

You can play a long time without geting any if you're just a few techs behind. And then there is always the factor luck.

Definitely huge luck factor. I just got my sister playing, and she is still working on finishing her first game (never played more than an hour or two before quitting before). So now, as the Maya, she has had two scientific leaders, the second she got for getting Chivalry. In what is her first game where she researched past the bottom level of the AA techs.

Pure luck. I played many my previous games as Germany and Ottomans(both scientific) and got no SGL. In my last game, as Iroqious I got three!!!!! of them three consequent researched techs - Guyseta, Old Smoke and Three Feathers:)). I was really surprised of my luck. Actually Three Feathers gave me troubles, bcs I was fighting on three fronts thus preventing me from getting MGL ,when SGL is waiting in my capital, but I got last SGL just after rushing Hoover with Old Smoke and I decided to keep Three Feathers for SETI or even better - for Internet

My best SGL story: An SGL for researching Bronze, my first tech. My India had the Pyramids by about round 12. Massive culture, lots o' tourism, and very rapid expansion.

Wait, so you mean that if you're the first to research a tech, you've got a 3% chance (5% chance if your civ's scientific) of getting a scientific leader? Is that right? (I wonder if it says something about this in the C3C manual; should probably check it out... NAAA!)

Yes, it is exactly this way.

The manual is typically vague on the actual chances, but that's the gist. Be first, be scientific. Be lucky. I just got my third SGL on a reagent game. The bummer is w/SGLs the MGLs can longer rush Great Wonders, just Small Wonders and routine building projects (and armies, of course).

Ahh!

Now I understand why I managed to get 5 SGL's in one game whilst being the Germans and hardly ever get any as another civ!
