We need another AAR for it....

DF is impossible to play without some sort of graphics pack. I already stare at characters all day, I dont need to do it in my games too.

Heresy, it's harder to play WITH a graphics pack. I'm so used to ASCII now that graphics packs ruin the game.

And a big monitor helps too, I gave up trying to fit some of the graphics packs into a space that would fit on my 17" monitor >_<

Damn, every time someone mentions or posts pics of DF I want to play it again but am I reminded I don't have the time right now.

I play in windowed mode...

I tried playing it... I tried.

It's extremely easy. Maybe I'll make an AAR and show you all how a master plays DF.

It is December 1942. The war in Europe has just finished. The war in Asia has just begun.

The borders were a mess, so I went into the editor and redrew the map of Europe myself.

42USSR1.png

Playing the USSR I tried Volum's tactic here. I waited until July 1941 and there was still no DoW from Germany, so I took the initiative. 365 days later and Germany was no more, and the rest of the European Axis fall soon after. I admit I cheated a bit, namely holding grand military parades in Moscow every time I release a puppet to keep dissent down.

Flanders is quite strong now, controlling the larger part of former Belgium and the Netherlands. I gave Suwalki, Bialystok and Bielsk back to Poland because I'm nice. I gave myself cores over everything east of that, as OTL. I let the Albanians keep Pristina and the Hungarians Transylvania. Romania and Bulgaria joined after the "Abandon the Germans" events, and I didn't change the border except to give Larissa back to Greece.

The Italian Socialist Republic is led by a presumably brainwashed Mussolini. The Americans beat me to Sicily and the southern tip of the peninsula unfortunately. The Italians had earlier landed in the Palestine and I narrowly managed to get there before the British who were marching in from Syria and Egypt, sacrificing half the Soviet Navy in the process. The Palestinians now have their own state and I gave them cores over Sinai as well.

I was toying around with World Empires Live and here are 2 screenshots showing me playing as the Tribe of Tripoli.

Screenshot 1: Was about to conquer the Tribe of Tunis when I took this screenie. As can be seen on the flags, I have a cav, a inf, a siege and some naval units.
The coin I get at Sea is from Fishing.

Screenshot 2: Here are the units at this point in time with the technology levels I had. There are many more unit in the game all from Warriors up to Tanks and Bombers.

Is World Empires Live essentially a Civilization MMO? Looks interesting.

While I like the graphics and look of the game, a few extremely major problems:

1. The map is retardedly small.

2. Why does the javeliner look like a cave man in the year 1544?

3. Why does Tripoli have junks?

4. Again, the map is retardedly small.

5. How are you only advancing to the Iron Age approx 2000 years late?

6. Tribe of Tripoli? What the heck? There has never been a 'tribe' of these cities. It was Phoenician, Greek, Carthaginian, Roman and Muslim.

Hi PrinceScamp!
Have you tried the free Demo yet because I doubt that you have.

1) The map is huge, 180x72 hexes. You only see a tiny part of it, check the minimap and you see that this is only a small part of the total map. You can scroll or position the map is several ways. Game starts with 40 factions plus revolutionaries and pirates, all to make life hard for you :)

2) I do not know, I did not make the arts. The game has around 80 different units, I can give you the mail address to our Artist if you want to know from where the concept of the Javeliner was taken ;)

3) Because they researched then. Same as in Civilization where Zulu can get Nukes or Spaceships....

4) Already addressed

5) Ages are individual for each factions, so like in Age of Empires one faction can be in Medieval while another factions is still in Stone Age. This screenshot was only intended to show some features so I toyed around and was only on Iron Age. You could make this better, try the Demo please and see what you think after playing it

6) Since there are 40 factions, it is random which ones start and where. You do not choose you starting location. But City names are pseudo Historical so you will only find for example Moscow where Moscow roughly is. We could have made names changing through ages, there are pros and cons with it. We chose to make it convenient for players instead of entirely historical. Therefore you can see the flags are random, you wont see an american flag in 2000 B.C because that would onlyk be even more annoying. We chose the leist bad of 2 ways of representing it :)

I hope you will actually try the game because from earlier experience I am quite fed up with new games that are destroyed due to rumors beforehand not even given the chance due to biasism. It is easy to let rumors go overbord and small companies do not have the luxury of spending millions on advertisements and campaigns. Please be open minded, World Empires Live is a new brand and supported by online servers, leages, site and rankings. That is also why it is subscription based. Pretty much the same model Web Stratego uses, a game does not have to be MMORPG to be susbcription.

Try it first, then bash it not the opposite. Best way is

1) Try the game
next best is
2) Hear from ppl who played the game
worst option is
3) Hear from ppl who heard from other ppl who might or might not have played the game.

I hope you get my point.
Enjoy!

1. Map is still too small. I have a problem with Greece consisting of a single city. And yeah I knew it was only one small part of it.

5. Figured but good to know you were just playing around.

6. I think you missed my point, I meant that being the Tribe of Tripoli seems like an odd name to play as, maybe fine at the beginning but pretty quickly and especially once you begin to conquer land you would be a state, which could contain tribes but wouldn't BE a tribe.

And no I am probably never going to play your game because A) I don't care about the online parts and will NOT pay a subscription, and B) The map is too small. I'm just offering some (hopefully semi-constructive) criticism. Best of luck though.

Yeah I've noticed that, unless the odds are overwhelmingly in your favour. Except if the enemy outnumber me I simply go in with the first wave, cut down a few stragglers then let my force do the rest.

Alright, thank you for your feedback :)
FYI, the Tribe -> Civilization -> Empire -> World Empire when your faction grows bigger.

So this means if you start out as "Tribe of Rome" once you have expanded your faction a bit you will become known as "Civilization of Rome", later "Empire of Rome" and finally (if you are very successfull) as "World Empire of Rome".

We have considered option of renaming factions also but still there are issues with it and as of now your name will be the name of your Capital. Map is 180x72 hexes yes.

@PrinceScamp

Really? I find that I have to kill 3/4 of the enemy to ensure my men don't get slaughtered. Why Cavalry charge and then sit in the middle of the infantry to die I'll never understand. Or why my men hate 2 vs 1 fights in their favour but love 1 vs 6 against them

Depends on troop type, plus you need to order them around a bit too sometimes (backspace brings up a minimap troop order menu thing).

@Zapp: Ah, I like how the name changes :)

2nd Pic: The Interstate going into the city from the Commercial district and Airport.
EDITED: Christmas comes to town. The lights have been provided for your viewing pleasure by City Hall.

The city now has 500,000 residents.
