A key on PC and enhanced Macintosh keyboards that controls the way the cursor control keys work for some programs. Many applications ignore the Scroll Lock setting.
IIRC some of the keys on a PC keyboard (scroll lock, sysrq) are used on some Unix systems. I presume they were just left on to save the keyboard manufacturers making too many different models.
And of course, a "102 key" keyboard looks better in sales brochures than a mere "99 key" one.
When I was using DOS, i used to program a small resident thing that automatically rebooted the comp when I pressed scrool lock. I had to intercept the appropriate interrupt. Yeah some DOS games were already unstable.
Actually I think lots of screenshoters software use this shortkey to take a quick snap...
