Searching for Resources

Does anyone have any suggestions for finding resources on the map? Ok I'm looking for say coal, it says i have it, it may be buried under a city somewhere but that is a sample.. dredging the map looking for a coal icon. Also say you want a location that has whales.. is there a way to find them easily other than pouring over the map with a magnifying glass. Thanks so much!

Maybe it would be nice to have a lens just for resources.

Strategic map mode helps a bit, if you turn off all map displays other than resource icons.

I made a mod for this purpose, "clear resource icons" on the workshop. It takes resource icons that are in the fog part of the map and prevents their color from becoming all brown, like the rest of the map.
