What am I put on this earth for. I am being plauged by this philisophical question: If am not merely a being of flesh and blood, than what am I? How, and to a lesser extent, why do I exist?

You exist because your parents had sexual intercourse and your daddy's sperm met your mother's egg and through a series of biological wonders and many cell duplications you were born. You were put on this earth for no real reason. If you would like, we could get you a labotomy and you wont have to worry about this kind of stuff anymore.

I have a religious answer: we exist to develop and become like God, and in doing so to glorify Him. We can become greater than we can even imagine.

If religion isn't your thing, how's biology? We are here because our ancestors passed on their genes. We can strive to pass on our genes. Ultimately, we may be no more meaningful to the universe than ripples in a draining bathtub. But on the other hand, nowhere else has anything so complex been made by the universe. If it is our ultimate fate to fade away, at least we can realize our potential before we do.

My dear Admiral, it is that reason for which you were put on this Earth in the first place. God has a plan for you, as he does for me and ColliovonHoolio ( which would be a great name for a band BTW) and every other schmuck out there. It is up to you to determine just exactly what for. thats what life is all about.

Oh, and the whole sex lesson is right too

bah, I'm talking more on the level of my conciousness existing, not biologically. (Don't give me a religious or scientific answer either. I'm looking for something philisophical).

That's something you - and only you - can answer.

Sometimes it's not the destination, but the voyage, that matters.

You exist to do what you want to do. :)

You are like a cell. A cell is made of atoms, but its behavior is more complex. You are made of cells, but your bahavior is more complex. You're more than just cells because your combination allows for complex behavior.

Your conscious goal in life is to die.

I hope that was philosophical enough, because you really can't answer this question without science or religion.

That bit is automatic, I prefer not to focus on it right now.

Sorry, I didn't think before I typed that.

Your subconscious goal is to die. Your conscious goal is to keep from dieing. Thus life ensues and we watch the conflict.

That's an interesting way of putting it. However I think there is more to life than avioding death. ;)

I meant our unique personalities that cannot be described away by just the structures of our bodies.

I mean, I have two cats, both of the same mother, raised in identical circumstances and yet there personalities are very different and have been from as soon as they could move about to display them. You could say the differences are all in the brain but who operates the brain? Could it be that the spirits were there before the body. Also, if consciousness is all just mechanical than do you think soon we'll be able to create conscious machines? What if I could create a spambot with your exact personality? Would your life then become expendible? Do you really think we can ever truly mimic the complexity of even an animal, let alone a human being?

We were put on this earth to dance and get angry and sad and happy and tired and win and lose and probably more dancing. Okay then you die.
The WHY isn't important, the HOW you are living is.

"You were not put on this earth to think about bog!"

Sounds like horsecrap to me. The cats easily have had enough divergence from genetics and environment to account for it.

Not soon, perhaps at some point

That's an interesting question, not one easily answered.

Complete mimicry would be extraordinarily difficult if not impossible, however it is plausible that we could make some sort of concious entity similar to humans.

Right.
It's like a death march.

"It's like a death march."

Except sex drugs and good music are all readily available. What are you complaining for?

So i understand the question is "why am i conciousnessly(sp?) existing ?" Or something like that.

First of all what makes you so sure you exist ? :D ... I'm joking, i don't want to start that reality crap.

If you would find the reason for your existence then what other pointless question will you wonder all your life ? ...

Here's one of those stories Buddha said to one of his follower.
It's not a religious answer - read it. :p

This follower of his was really confused because Buddha didn't answer some fundamental questions like the one you are asking yourself. So his master taled him the story of the man hit by a poison arrow.
So there's this guy that was hit by a poison arrow who refuses to be treated by a doctor untill he knows who his atacker was, where does he live, who are his children, why did he shoot him, ... and so on ...
Of course the poisoned guy can never find the answer to ALL his questions untill he dies. But if he did knew the answers would it really matter ?

That is the condition YOU are in. Those kinds of questions you ask yourself are the questions of the poisoned man. The poison is DEATH, and it will come in 70-80 years ... You are cannot find the answers to all your questions untill then.
But if you actually find the answers to -some- of them, will they really matter ?

Amen to that. :)

You don't need to know these things, it's ok if you don't. Nobody knows squat about it. We are just improvising "on the way there".
Nobody has a clue where this life will take them ... you shouldn't try to look for the road to the end, you should build it. :D

Also, one of my favorite funny quotes fits in this case :
"We have no idea what we are doing, but it's fun." :)

Note:
He asked for a non-religious answer. So don't start ranting about how predeterminism contradicts what i said. :p
