Selling enemy's cities to ally for profit?

Hmmm just thought of this one, haven't tried it.

Would it be possible to, after just conquering a city, sell it to another nation in exchange for an alliance and a ton of other stuff (tech/trade/gold/etc)? If so, this could possibly be a great way to divide a country in two and earn some cash at the same time.

Looking for feedback.

If it works it could be a rather easy way of raising cash. Unfortunately, when I try to offload cities the AIs are rarely interested, even when I simply ask "care to offer anything for X". Of course, these are usually worthless cities. With a resource or lux I'm sure the AI would pay up. :king:

That's another unrealistic aspect to Civ 3.

Cities have been sold in history, although not core cities admittedly.

We can't do that - but cities can Flip to another civ! :crazyeye:

yeh its a bit unrealistic but who cares if no one like it they dont have to play it do they and if you uninstall the new patch then you can trade cities

We can sell cities, the AI just doesn't want to buy them. In PTW, city selling will probably become more popular.

I think it would be better to be able to sell cities to their original civ (ie the one that built it) - so you could capture a city in war and then if you didn't want it sell it back for a profit.

This would get rid of the city selling exploit that was blocked in v1.21 but allow cities to be sold which was originally part of the game.

you used to be able to sell cities and it used to be a good way to get rid of the low production/ high corruption cities that you capture. Unfortunately no more. Even given as gifts, they seem to make people angrier at you.

Well, the way I see it is why would I want to sell a city anyway? If I conquered it, I want it or I don't. If I don't, I don't want anybody else to have it either.

I've found that instead of razing cities that I don't want, I sometimes immediately give them to someone else (since they won't give me anything for them). Especially when I see someone coming near the borders before I've put any defenders there.

I'd rather bask in the graciousness of a one city civ from the other side fo the world than let an opponent take it from me.

the good thing about selling cities is if you have a city that is going to be teken over by a civ you can sell it to another civ for tonnes of gold/tech etc and your sity wont fall into the hands of the enemy

Have you had success with this on patch 1.21f? The only time I've seen a Civ give or take a city in trade was at the peace table. I can rarely get them to take one for 1gp.

That's a good point. If you can help your rep by giving away your trash why not?

I just don't trust the AI. I give them a city and that will be the one they send they're armie out of to conquer me!!

no what i meant was in the original versian it was great to do that
in the 1.21 patch they will only accept or give cities they will not accept trade deals

I don't trust them either. That's why I always give it to one of the Civ's stuck in the stone age, and never to one who's boundaries are close to the city I'm giving.

It seems like a dirty trick at the least. Sell off improvements in a border city, trade it for lots of gold or lots of tech, then wait for it to culture flip back. If it doesnt, go retake it.

Trading cities is a bit more lenient in peace talks - they seem more likely to trade captured cities (Romans recently were NOT inclined to give me a size 2-3 Roman city, but were happy to give me a size 5 city they captured from the French).
