SerfNES Update I : Years 20 ad - 30 ad
Introduction
Although most countries turned to peace after decades of strife, a common choice was the large expansion of peacetime armies in most able nations. While some areas of the world, such as the Middle East threatened war, other areas remained peaceful. Will the Mediterranean world return to the old order of Roman and Greek dominance, or will the Germans and Persians prevail in their struggles?
Domestic Events
Emperor Augustus of the Romans has begun construction of a huge new temple to the Roman God Mars. The new building will be located near the old Senate building, and will be used by members of Augustus's family and the legions.
An attempt to spread Greek inspired Egyptian culture throughout the Grand Aegyptian empire has proved fruitless. Reasons abound, but mostly the lack of appropriate funding and the stubbornness of the local cultures of the Balkans have caused the program to be ineffective.
The Imperial Numidians have begun to massive building projects; one resulting in outstanding success and the other a waste of the empire's resources. The first project was the completion of a large number of North-European style fortresses, which are both inexpensive and can be quickly built. They were built along the coast on the northern side of the nation.
The second project was a new system of aqueducts. A complete lack of funding (most money was spent on the massive fortress venture) and of properly trained locals have resulted in no new, working aqueducts for the people of Numidia.
The Catuvellauni have begun a massive new project: a new Trade Market of Verlamion. The market will be used in the buying and selling of goods from all over the British Isles and Northern Europe, and will bring in people from many far away places.
The new city of Caerdydd was built in the land of the Ordovices. The new city will be used to defend the land of the Ordovices and to consolidate power among the various tribes.
The Cimbric tribes have spread to the nearby island of Fyn. Their large navy has helped to make the settling a very easy and painless process.
Dacia has begun construction of a new Academy of Technology that will hopefully result in the education of Dacian nobles and the creation of new technology.
Parthia has begun construction on a new trade route to India. This new road, which will go through many kinds of terrain and connect Ectabana with the major cities of India, should enable better trade between Parthia and India, along with setting an example for more infrastructure projects in the future.
Jesus Christ has continued his preaching in Judea, calling for the defense of the holy land while still asking that they forgive their Roman opponents.
International Events
The mass mobilization of the Roman army has become public knowledge to their neighbors, some of which may become concerned and curious as to where the Roman armies are heading.
Grand Aegyptus has begun a massive blockade of the Judea coastline and stopped incoming and outgoing boats headed to Judean ports. The blockade has become a huge problem for Judea, seriously hurting their economy and influencing them to invest in a larger navy.
(Judea : -1 Trade)
The Catuvellauni have regained contact with their old Roman friends, along with made new contacts in the nations of the Picts, the Cherusci, and the Cimbri.
Cappadocian-Parthian relations are becoming increasingly stressful after the Parthian invasion of Armenia (see Military Events). They have responded by constructing city walls around their eastern city of Kaymaklu.
(Cappadocia : -Confidence)
Military Events
Small skirmishes with their Celtic neighbors have resulted in Pictish casualties in the southern lands of the Picts.
(Picts : -1 Levied Infantry)
Civil war, has, for a short time, engulfed the tribes on the eastern edge of the Cherusci. Their allied tribe, the Bructeri, have left the alliance and fought the Cherusci in the southeast. The overwhelming Cherusci levied army easily defeated the unorganized Bructeri, causing them to retreat farther into Germania.
(Cherusci : -3 Levied Infantry)
The Gotones tribes have begun a mild civil war. For several years two factions, the Aestigotones and Visigotones, have fought for tribal supremacy. By 30 ad they have made yet another (temporary) peace treaty, but their is concern that the tribe could split without major civil and political reforms.
(Gotones : -Confidence)
Dacia has expanded their empire to the west towards the Black Sea, although bad weather and difficult terrain have limited their conquests.
(Dacia : -1 Professional, -4 Levied Infantry)
The major event of the decade was the Parthian invasion and subsequent destruction of Armenia in the First Parthian-Armenian War. The war began in 23 ad when Parthia invaded Armenia from the west, through the Archremxid pass. The Armenians fought valiantly, but were unable to hold back the Parthian armies when they sent forward their heavy infantry. They were, fortunately for the Armenians, unable to use their elephants in the mountainous terrain.
The Parthians marched on and easily captured the Armenian capital, Yerevan. The Armenian royal family was moved to Parthia as prisoners, and the previous land of the Armenians is to be annexed into the Parthian empire. The war is effectively over, although some fighting still continues in the north.
(Parthia : -9 Professional Infantry)
(Armenia : -Independence)
