Because these are the only options that count.

Edit: even though its the best board game even, its not necesarily my favorite.

A lot of fun the first few times you play, but I've found it depends mostly on the starting position. Haven't tried the expansions yet, might make it more interesting.

My Brother in law is a big fan, and usually brings it over when he visits. Its a lot more fun than monopoly, thats for sure.

Not my favorite, but with the right group, its not a bad game.

It's alright, but it don't trump Risk

Settlers of Catan is an awesome game! It doesn't beat Stratego though.

I usually pwn in Settlers. I won $15 in a competition at my school (third place).

As is wiki, but before I stumbled into this thread, I wouldn't have known to use either.

Anyway, it looks like the sort of game I would enjoy. I'll hold judgement until actually playing it, though.

I seem to remember Mr. Narz is a big fan. I've never played it myself.

It's way better than risk, and risk is great.

BURN THE HERETIC!

:p

I do enjoy it, but I don't think the thrill of taking over the world (in any and all games) ever gets old.

Good memory Fiftyson!

Indeed.

Settlers pwns Risk on many levels (though Risk is a fun classic as well).

I'd put Settlers second only to chess and the best mutli-player board game I've experienced thus far (second being Risk, followed by Axis & Allies).

I have the game, and I used to rock at it before we got the sea farers expansion.

Now I'm not so good for some reason.

It is, by far, my favourite board game. The start positions do matter a lot, but the process to distribute them usually leads to a fair result.

Settlers is very good but it's just the tip of the German-boardgame iceberg. It's a good introduction for people who grew up on the boardgame mush that Milton-Bradley/Hasbro/Toys-R-Us has accustomed us to (Risk stopped being fun for me as soon as I realized it was one giant dice roll. And anyone who actually ENJOYS Monopoly? Shudder... get away...). But there's much more out there.

I recommend Hammer of the Scots, Tigris and Euphrates, and Dune.

And if you're asking me what the best German boardgame ever is, I'd have to say Lord Of The Rings: Confrontation.

It's like Stratego, only with actual strategy. ;)
