Settting up a network without swithches

I have two computers who were previously tied in a network with a simple switch. Now, is it possible to simply run a cable between the two network cards. If so, can you tell me how? Do I have to buy a new switch?

Yes, you can run a network cable connecting the two PC's. You will need what is called a crossover cable in order for it to work, no switch involved.

The PC's will auto-configure an IP address, and if you have file and print sharing enabled, you should be able to share files between the 2 PC's.
