SGL Techs...

Any one that you get before anyone else.

Really? Can someone confirm this (not that I doubt you Tomoyo :) )? I was under the eimpression certain ones like Republic, writing (more intellectual, non-warfare) were designated for this...

I hardly ever get SGL's past the ancient age and I believed this was why/

Well, the human is more likely to get Republic and Writing before the AI (because the AI researches the other techs first), so you are, in that sense, more likely to get a SGL from those.

The only ones you really are less likely to get a SGL from are early ancient age techs, because AI's will usually beat you to a lot of them. But it is 3% per first-researched tech you get, to the best of my knowledge (only thing I'm not totally positive about is the 3%).

Tomoyo and Beorn are correct. Any tech you research before the AI can generate an SGL. The chances are 3% for most Civs and 5% for Scientific Civs.

Alrighty then. I guess I heard too many people at the HoF talking about "popping a SGL from ____ tech" that I thought there was certain techs that caused SGL's.

They just pick the cheap techs that can pop easy SGLs...

The HOF tactic isn't quite that simple. In addition to selecting the designated SGL tech, the AI has to be stacked in such a way that none of them start with the specified tech. This also has to be balanced with another typical HOF tactic, being that of selecting eight Scientific AI's.

After all that, then you get the fun of going through maps one at a time, playing each until that tech is complete just to find out if you get an SGL.

The way some of them play over there is *really* competitive. I certainly couldn't play that way.

...Off to start the "n00b HoF" ;)

Not everyone in the HOF plays that way. A lot of players just drop in to play a game to fill an empty slot. There's not much competition on those. ;)

Hey, I tried to just drop one in, and it just happened that two other people also tried to get the slot in the same update, and now space is after the slot.

Well, I was speaking about empty slots in general. Since Quartermaster's Challenge rankings are based primarily on HOF game rankings, people are targetting the #1 slots like there's no tomorrow. It's the other nine per table that usually stay free.

and exactly the reason that I stay away from HOF and GOTM. Competition inherently encourages cheats and exploits.

The legal exploits are part of the fun. The illegal exploits are why there's a judging staff. ;)

To get anywhere near the top you effectively have to play the game in a very specific way, and try and get that extra 0.1% over your rivals. Fine if that's your thing, but ICSing to the dom limit and MMing it really doesn't appeal. Still, if some people enjoy it...

I understand, but there are a lot of empty slots, and the majority of them are Fastest Finish tables, not Score.
