SGn00b - for those new to SG's

Oooh, a snazzy grey interface for me :)

Hey guys sorry I haven't been active lately. I, uh, messed up our internet really badly. I can still connect, but only if I shut off the router and turn it on again, and then for only five minutes or so. I'm not out, I can still grab a save in that time, but I won't be commenting very much till the problem is worked out.

And about the beakers, I would have probably noticed they weren't beakers if I ever called them beakers. I just say science. I'm pretty sure the academy was Beijing because it had the most science, and academies multiply current science in that city by 150%.

Ack! I wasn't trying to get at any of you guys - I've just noticed people say 'beakers' a lot on these forums, and it was amusing me, so I thought I'd share the joke

I knew what you were getting at, no need to worry. I was just pointing out that fact that I never really noticed that they aren't beakers because I don't ever think of them that way.

Did you install new firmware on the router? Best thing to do, with knowing nothing about your problem, would be to cut everything back to bare essentials i.e. disable all firewall software, disable all the advanced configurational stuff in the router, and then configure everything one by one until it "breaks" again. Then you'll know where the problem lies. Of course, without knowing the problem, it is like finding the politician in a large group of idiots.

It seems that CivFanatics Email Notification is doing it again. I thought nothing was happening in here and decided to mosey on over to take a look. Well, something like 10 posts since I last visited and not a single email notification.

Edit: Oh lookie here, I visit this thread (not the forum itself, as the email notification says) and get an email that AK has posted a message. Yeah, I can see that, it is above this message.

The "daily updates" setting seems to work pretty well for me, except that I've usually read them all by the time it sends it :)

Hey all, I played half. I'll finish tomorrow. Just stopped for criticism, comments and suggestions.

Turn 332 (1510 AD)
AK: Foreign Relations: They hate us. They really, really hate us for the most part. Will work on Julius and Sal.
AK: Civics: We're a warrior people. Thus we change to Nationhood and Theocracy. No switching religions for the short term.
AK: Tech Trading: Only trade I can make is Nationalism to Mansa for Drama and Optics. Don't like the numbers, so don't do the deal.
AK: Note to self: Do someting about health issues in Beijing

Turn 333 (1515 AD)
AK: After moderate musing decide that mounted magic firesticks should be in our future. Education -> Liberalism -> Military Tradition -> Economics. Only fly in this ointment is Toku already has education.

Turn 334 (1520 AD)
AK: Well that was a short plan. Toku just discovered Liberalism.
Research begun: Military Tradition
AK: New plan Military Tradition, then whatever leads to cannon.
Tech learned: Optics
Shanghai begins: Courthouse
Texcoco begins: Courthouse
Tlacopan begins: Courthouse
Good Enough begins: Market
Ironchou begins: Market
Angle begins: Heroic Epic
AK: The psychotic years: start the Heroic Epic in angle to assist in our military efforts of the future.

Turn 335 (1525 AD)
Guangzhou begins: Hermitage
AK: As expected, we don't get the spiral thingy
Angle grows: 8

Turn 336 (1530 AD)
Guangzhou grows: 11

Turn 337 (1535 AD)

I'm getting the feeling that the only way to break out of this "dead-lock" we seem to be in is via the military route - i.e. lay the :hammer: on the Inca and Monte once and for all. Destroy them completely and we may be in with a chance. Then again, I am a n00b and an idiot (the worst combination ;)) so maybe you folks have other ideas.

that pretty much sums up my thoughts. that's why I paused for a bit. to give others time to comment. We could try to spread religion, but I don't think anyone except maybe julius will give us open borders and he's a sidebar.

Ironically, it was installing the new firmware that messed it up, somehow. I managed to fix it, by unplugging and shutting off everything, then turning it back on, and now it works fine. I guess we'll never know what was wrong. Unfortunatly, it still doesn't work with my DS (the reason I installed the firmware in the first place).

Got the save by the way, and will try to lay down as much smack as possible, as soon as possible (not tonight, ten tons of homework).

You appear to have switched to two military civics and queued up a load of buildings while we're not in a war, there, which doesn't quite add up to me.

I cant look at the save at the moment due to being at work, but I feel we need to assess (i.e. Admiral or Pie, you can tell us/me ;)) what the troop compositions are of the Inca and Montezuma. I think if we are going to decide to lay the smackdown, we are obviously going to need troops that are going to kill them with minimal losses (and plenty of siege weapons - Cannons would be very nice) and then plenty of them so we don't have to put a cease fire in place (unless we want to - in other words, not put a cease fire in place due to running out of troops etc).

What do you folks think? :hmm:

beef, I was looking at the long term. we're in status quo at the moment. but we're going to need to go to war soon. CH cut the maintenance costs. our new civs generate max experience "out of the gate" and minimize our costs. My thinking is more gold is always good. My thinking is being the first to cav will give us an edge to take down whomever. Right now we have plently of units for defense, but we'll go down in flames if we go on the offensive. The cities finish their current builds and then start doing military.

did that make any sort of sense?

Hey guys, you seem to have done a lot since i left. I agree with Admiral, the only way to really push ahead and grab the lead is to attack Monte and the Inca and wipe them off the map. This will give us the largest empire, most people and 2 less enemies to worry about.

Our Victory options are:

Cultural - not much hope as we haven't been planning for it.

Space Race - We could win this way but it would be very risky as we don't have muchof a technological advantage and i hate to win this way.

Conquest - No hope

Domination - Not sure but with alot of war we could win this way but it would take a lot of effort.

Diplo - This is our best shot. By taking over the Aztecs and the Inca we would have a very large population which we could use to almost win the election on our vote alone. If we also manage to get Caesar and Saladin to vote for us then we can win this way. However i don't know who we would be up against so we may need to find out and plan ahead.

This is my opinion please comment on it and give yours

You weren't done? Oooh I guess that explains why you only played 5 turns... Sorry, my bad, I missed you saying that. You go ahead and finish, I definetly won't be able to play tonight, and probably not tomorrow either. I'll probably have more time later in the week.

And Toma: I don't think we'll be able to win using Diplomacy, unless it's Backdoor Diplomacy (taking over enough of the world to vote yourself the winner), seeing as everyone hates our guts, our extended families and everything we stand for.

Ok, here's my take (Take this with a grain of salt as look at my avatar and sig):

Cultural: No chance. If we wanted to go for a C-V, we would have needed to start preparations within the first say, 20-50 turns. On Epic, the culture required is much to high for us to attain from here on at 1535AD.
Space Race: I think we would need to catch up to Japan first in tech, as it seems they may be two or so advances in front of us, and then exceed them to have a comfortable margin. I guess this also depends on our manufacturing capacity too. If guess even if we go for another type of victory, we may still need to :hammer: and :spank: Japan to stop them building any SS parts.
Conquest: Time is against us and this victory type is not really my forte at the moment (although working on it in SP games). Maybe someone with more experience here may be able to answer this one.
Domination: Similar thing to conquest although maybe we could achieve this. Might be something to ponder over as we finish off the Inca and Monte (how's that for positive thinking?!)
Diplomacy: I tend to disagree slightly with you here ST unless we get our population up by a factor of at least 2 if not 3 or more (although I haven't looked at the vic conditions in the game for a while). We are going to need the population for this as I don't think any Civ will vote for us with one exception - Julius. Everyone else, as AK said, absolutely hates us. When I played my last set of turns, even though I had no contact with Saladin during those turns, his diplo status with us was not good. Maybe this has changed since. Even though I don't really want to win via SS either, I think that may be the most likely victory type at this time. Let's have some conquest fun for now

So summarising what everyone said about VCs - we can't win by any of them? :p

More seriously :) I'm with everyone else who's commented - we've only really got a shot at Spaceship or Diplo and possibly Domination, and to do them we need to take out some of the others & ramp up our city count/population. So I guess we've got a short term goal of get Cavalry & get our military in shape and a mid-term goal of conquer the Incans & the Aztecs? (Particularly looking forward to this one, as Monty completely wiped me out in the last single player game I played - we were on good terms & I was setting up for a SS, and several hundred Aztecs came pouring over the border and took out two of my cities in two turns without losing more than a quarter of his army at which point I gave up.)

I've been enjoying following along. Very entertaining, guys.

Stupid lurker comment: "beaker" is a lot easier to spell than Erlenmeyer Flask.
