Well, we have researched metal casting to be able to build forges.
That's what the islands should build to be able to run an engineer and for more effective rushing. Tokyo and Edo also miss temple and monastery. So there are lots of useful builds, but none of the islands is switched to one.
And the capital needs a forge for more production and 2 additional happiness.

Ok, 'got it'.

Since klarius was talking about a limited war earlier should I try and kill her latest sortie? IIRC the settler would become a worker. Regrettably I can't get to her settler in one move. :( If Izzy settles should I try and take the city immediately?

I cannot check the save at the moment. How many units do we have in Barcelona ? I would not start a war with a few units in it, otherwise it is gone and I think taking it again will be harder than defending it. An additional worker is nice, but a war for just a worker is a little high the price. juballs sent out some units for scouting, so I do not know how many units we have around to defend. In my opinion we should start the next war with Izzy when we have construction and can build cats. Then go and finish her off completely. Then she has had enough time to build some nice courthouses for us.:)

There's a sword, axe and warror in Barcelona at present. Osaka's got two axes and two warriors at present. Satsuma's the lowest with a sword. I floated the idea because klarius had mentioned the possibility earlier of grabbing a warrior and having a limited war. Of course on the other hand a new city will cost Izzy in maintenance.

I'll play tomorrow evening after checking here for any further words of wisdom.

I would continue to settle around Osaka and ignore Izzy for the time being. If she settles some cities for us it is welcome.:) As long as she is in settling mode she will not build much military and with COL she will build some courthouses.
Another city between the wheat and the pigs SW of Osaka should have priority in my opinion.

I think building a forge in every city is good, that way our islands can finally get some production. Also, we should finish that settler in Satsuma as fast as chopping can make possible.

How far away from Construction are we, Sam?

I do think we want a limited war against Izzy, to remove all her southern cities :D Then we make peace, take techs from her, and then wait ten turns and destroy her. On the other hand, we need more units in range before we can war her.

Construction is 9 turns at our current 40% research rate, 7 turns at 50% which looks feasible. What settler in Satsuma? It's researching a library at present.

I believe we are wanting another city on that continent, so we should be chopping the library and then chopping a settler there, that way Osaka is able to build military while we continue building our empire.

Turn 0 -500 AD
Start Kyoto on a forge with Tokyo and Edo starting temples.

IBT:
The barb city makes it clear that they don't like unwelcome visitors by attacking our swordman. Despite killing an axeman and archer our swordman finally succumbs to a barb archer.

Izzy then decides to liven things up.

Turn 1 - 515 AD
MM Tokyo for food. The empire grows to half a million. Herodotus takes note.

Turn 2 - 530 AD
Osaka completes a temple. I decide that the forge can wait and start a swordman.

Turn 3 - 545 AD
The swordman at Barcelona dispatches a war chariot. A somewhat puny stack approaches.

IzzyStack1.jpg

I take advantage of the war to scout Izzy's land.

Cordoba.jpg

IBT:
Izzy attacks with an archer which is highly unsuccessful

Turn 4 - 560 AD
Barcelona completes the granary. Since it is now costing us more gold I decide to start a courthouse. A rather more impressive stack heads for Barcelona.

IzzyStack2.jpg

Turn 5 - 575 AD
The axeman at Barcelona accounts for an archer, spearman and two axemen. Not be outdone the swordman swiftly destroys an axeman, two war chariots and an archer. I rush the temple at Tokyo.
Turn 6 - 590 AD
Osaka completes a swordman and starts on another. I send the swordman towards Barcelona. Tokyo starts on a forge. The swordman at Barcelona mops up a roving spearman.
Turn 7 - 605 AD
Construction comes in and I start on Machinery.
Turn 8 - 620 AD
Izzy ponders her war strategy.
Turn 9 - 635 AD
The barbs decide to resume hostilities. An axeman at Osaka bumps off a warrior. Izzy having learnt nothing attacks with a war chariot which withdraws.
IBT:
An attack by an axeman at Barcelona comes to nothing.
Turn 10 - 650 AD
The axeman at Barcelona wipes out the injured war chariot whilst an axeman at Satsuma follows his lead against a barb axeman.

Handover
Izzy currently refuses to talk however two archers by Barcelona did not attack and are now heading towards Cordoba. I am letting our island cities grow unhappy so that the excess can be used as whipping materiel.

well its interesting how each time we begin seriously debating the merits of a war with Izzy she takes it out of our hands and declares war :p

I'll wait until tomorrow to take it, will wait for comments and thoughts until then.

My first thought is to rush a couple cats and try to take some of her southern cities, my only concern with that is whether we want to keep or raze the cities?

I don't think we need to rush the cats. I delayed the forge in Osaka to build a couple of swords. I think we should build the forge after the next sword (rushing when appropriate) and then start building cats normally.

I think Izzy is probably running a bit low on military at present. The axe in the woods by Satsuma should look to see if it can intercept the two archers heading towards Cordoba. Assuming it survives it can then scout that area.

Izzy may then sue for a ceasefire which is probably worth taking whilst we build up our forces. After it expires we should be in a stronger position to start taking her southern cities. :)

That's it with our discussion on the war with Izzy.:) We are playing with aggressive setting for the AI and we provoked her a lot.

I would not take her cities, just raze them. They will just add to our maintenance and this will slow us down even more. We are already behind in tech and have to gain speed, so we need cities around Osaka to get the economy going. She did not have enough time to build courthouses, so her cities are useless for now.

I doubt that she will sue for peace soon. We will need to raze a city to get something out of the deal.

i think we need to rush the cats before the forges, for one reason only and thats mass military losses. 3 cats can wipe a 60% defence bonus down to about half, so rushing 5 cats would give our swords a huge advantage against any defenders izzy currently has.
we should think one city at a time as well, as to what we will keep and what we will raze. any cities in optimal growth locations?

I don't really think that Izzy is that near to cats yet. Her last attack was beaten off without any losses from our side so I think we have time to build up and attack without rushing too much.

I think we have to remember that we want to keep our research going as much as possible as we will be lagging the other civs. Rushing Osaka too much will affect our gold. Izzy's a pain but no more than that.

i was more under the impression that we were going into attack mode sooner then others.

if we are on the defensive, then we are okay for now, but if we launch an attack... we need cats!
