SGOTM 02 - Geezers

Turn 0 -1100 AD
Guilds is already known and we need to get Astronomy. As markh as been building up the treasury there is not too much invested in Guilds so I decide to research Astronomy instead. I send the galley by Kyoto to explore. Both Kyoto and Tokyo are building colosseums probably because that's all that was available at the time they were started. Harbours seem more appropriate to improve health and trade income.

I notice that Seville has no military. Send a warrior from Barcelona towards Seville. Start Samurai in Osaka. The stack by Barcelona looks a bit light to attack Madrid judging by the screenshot Thrallia took earlier so I decide to wait for reinforcements.

Turn 1 - 1106 AD
Rush the caravel in Edo. A pair of archers saunter out from Cordoba in the direction of Osaka.

Turn 2 - 1112 AD
Send the caravel from Edo to the East and start a longbowman. The other caravel in the area meets Mao who is annoyed with us. Islam FIDL. Almost certainly Mansa.

Turn 3 - 1118 AD
Kill barb axe by Kagoshima.

Turn 4 - 1124 AD
Continue exploring with caravels and galley. The archers from Cordoba have a look at Seville where the warrior is just arriving.

Turn 5 - 1130 AD
Kublai Khan offers open borders. I don't see any advantage to it for the time being so I decline.

Turn 6 - 1136 AD
Rush the harbour in Kyoto. In retrospect I think this was an error. Take a few screenshots of capitals.

Turn 7 - 1142 AD
Osaka finishes the samurai and I start a catapult. Samurai sent north to Barcelona.

Turn 8 - 1148 AD
Continue exploring with caravels and galley.

Turn 9 - 1154 AD
A couple of barb axes move towards Satsuma and a barb archer is near Kagoshima. As Satsuma only has a sword I send an axe from Osaka as backup.

Turn 10 - 1160 AD
Kublai Khan builds the Sistine Chapel. The barb axes join forces and move nearer to Satsuma. The barb archer by Kagoshima starts moving in the same direction.

wow...my turn again already?

I'll wait to pick it up until tomorrow night, that way maybe we can gather some wool in here...

A few small points:
Get the galley back to Tokyo and load up the useless worker there. Get him over to the mainland as scout.
At the same time you can shuffle a unit from Tokyo to Osaka for happiness.
There is a worker with full movement fortified in Kagoshima.
That's really never necessary.
Get him out let him start a pasture and immediately cancel the order. The one turn to the improvement will still be done and the worker can run away next turn if necessary.

We really need to go for Madrid soon, but our defenses are thin. I would build 1-2 horse archers in Osaka next (still not aqueduct), to have some faster response troops.
I would also put a turn into a defender in every city. By that you can rush it in an emergency.

I presume you mean Kyoto instead of Osaka?

I moved the worker there when the barb archer was rather nearer.

Well, obviously a small mistake .
Just wanted to test if anybody is reading my posts ;).

It is fortified and by that hidden to the next player.
That's a :nono: in SGs. Either move it yourself (preferred), or unfortify and note in the log, please.

 Well it's actually sleeping but I take your point for the future.

@Thrallia - Please keep moving the caravel by Heliopolis to the east. I'm pretty certain no other civ has snagged the circumnavigation bonus so it would be nice to get it. There shouldn't be too many turns left until you reach our lands again.

Well :),

but Sam (and others), did you also understand the other, game mechanics, part (it should never be necessary to fortifysleep workers in cities).
I assume the worker was disturbed by the archer being SE of it.
The worker could have gone north, build a road (or other improvement) and immediately cancel the task. Still the next turn one turn is done towards the road and the worker can move again. Either to continue the pasture, when the archer moves away, or continue the road. Or even move another tile and begin another improvement for a turn.

Only if a city is surrounded by enemies with no safe tile available one should put workers in cities.

So how exactly do you cancel the action?

Normally I just click on the worker and move it somewhere else. However sometimes I've found that the worker won't move anywhere else until the next turn which is why I usually play safe and move it inside a city whilst I still have spare turn before it's in danger.

Is there something else I could, or should, be doing?

After you gave the order you click the worker again (the game has probably moved the focus somewhere else in the meantime, so you have to find it again).
Then press the red cancel button.
This ensures the worker will be movable again the next turn. And it doesn't waste anything. The work for 1 turn is still done and can be continued anytime.
In principle it's early enough to cancel the beginning of the next turn, but if no other unit gets active this turn, you are too late to cancel.

If you have difficulties to judge where a unit can go within a turn, you can hold the right mouse button and move the cursor around. You still can cancel the movement by only releasing the button when over the unit again.

Ahhh... I've never spotted that button before.

alright, here's my 'got it' I'll post my turns in a bit, hopefully I can keep track of my turns better this time and not go over the 10 I'm supposed to do.

The Save

Turn 0: Move worker out of Kagoshima and start pasture

IBT: Both barb axes kill themselves against Satsuma.

Turn 1: Caravels going around the doughnut continent meet and then split to explore the southern continent. Eastern Caravel continues its Eastern course. Osaka Cat > Samurai(one more Samurai and I think we've got the forces necessary to take down Madrid) production switched to Longbow in Seville, Barcelona to give them ability to rush it later if needed.

Turn 2: barb archer killed near Satsuma. Decide we don't really need the caravel in Seville, so I change prod to Cat. Pasture near Kagoshima finished, Granary rushed

Turn 3: Kagoshima Granary>Longbowman. Worker begins road to connect Pasture, will then road over to the next city site(W of Osaka on coast). Worker near Seville begins quarry on stone.

Turn 4: Forge rushed in Barcelona(it was working basic tiles and unhealthy)

Turn 5: We get the circumnavigation bonus, Scientist born in Tokyo(he wants to research paper) Barcelona Forge>Cat

Turn 6: Declare war on Izzy(stack will move in and begin bombardment of Madrid, defenses should be gone by the time our next Samurai arrives) Osaka Samurai>Horse Archer

Turn 7: Archers approach Seville. Worker dropped off on main continent. Nara founded. Osaka Horse Archer>Horse Archer. Archer rushed in Seville

IBT: Archer in Seville killed.

Turn 8: Kyoto Colosseum>Theater.

IBT: Seville lost  I'm sorry! I thought I would be able to rush the LB, but Seville was too small

Turn 9: Horse Archer and Samurai head toward Seville. Bombardment of Madrid begins. Samurai kills archer in Madrid, Axeman kills Archer fleeing Madrid to gain medic promotion.

Turn 10: Madrid bombardment complete. We've got enough cats to suicide a couple as well.

Notes:
  • Our Scientist wants to research Paper. Should we use it for that, or could we switch over to Paper ourselves, research it, and then use the scientist toward Astronomy?
  • barb Axe approaches Kagoshima from S, LB is 5 turns from complete, but can be rushed, klarius can decide whether to rush or not.
  • I made a mistake with troops in Seville, and ended up losing it, we will get it back, but unfortunately, it will probably cost us a few turns in our conquests
  • I kind of like Cordoba's location, with copper, forests, and at least 2 hills for production, we may want to consider keeping it
  • We got the circumnavigation bonus and don't really need anymore ships until Galleons
  • I gave Nara a theatre to build because it needs culture to get the iron in its fat cross and I wasn't sure what else to put there. It can be changed as only a few hammers are in it
  • Madrid has 2 axes, 1 chariot, 1 spearman, 3 archers for defense. Below is a pic of our attacking force.

Haven't looked into the save by now.
But one small comment.
Scientist for astronomy doesn't work. He will want to research education, if we have paper.
Civil service (and theology) closes out the astronomy use.
Maybe we put him on a caravel for an academy in Osaka (paper still a bit cheap for a scientist and we don't really need it now).

Not to worry about Seville. Mistakes happen. klarius will thank you as he will have some more action during his set.

I wasn't sure if we could use a GS for astronomy or not, I thought I'd heard somewhere that we couldn't, but thought I'd check. Either way, I didn't think Paper was important enough to waste the scientist on. I left him in Tokyo and put the galley next to Tokyo since it wasn't needed for exploration anymore so that we could move the scientist if needed.

Looking at the other civs it strikes me that Huayna & Mansa might be suitable. The rest of the civs are all Hindu and very lovey dovey with each other. These two however are a differnt religion and not particularly liked. They also seem to be middle ranking in power.

Of course they're still, currently, rather more powerful than ourselves. However once Izzy is gone we will have a chance to build our infrastructure and military.

Mind you I wonder how soon it will be before some of the other civs start settling our island.
