SGOTM 02 - Geezers

do you think Bismark would be willing to war Mao also? and if so, is that even a good idea? I think we may be able to fend off Mao's stacks ourselves, and then we should probably get peace from him until we can finish off Khan and Huayna

1) 1742AD : sink a Chinese frigate
lose a cav to a Chinese cav

IBT : nothing

2) 1744AD : just moving units
a cannon hits two Chinese cavs and withdraws
the price for rifling dropped by 23 turns

IBT : 4 new Chinese infantries and a cav appear

3) 1746AD : lose an ironclad to a Chinese frigate
kill a Chinese cav and a cannon

IBT : not much

4) 1748AD : uh the RNG knows that our ironclad should have not lost last turn, so a cannon from Cori kills one of the Chinese infantries and wounds all the other units in that stack
a second cannon attacks the stack and withdraws
cavs kill the stack without losses

we get 290 gold for peace with Kublai Khan

5) 1750AD : not much

IBT : rifling comes in, for assembly line we need to research 3 techs to be able to start research on it

6) 1752AD : not much to do

IBT : nothing

7) 1754AD : just moving units

IBT : we get a great prophet in Madrid, he would help researching divine right

8) 1756AD : kill a Chinese infantry and 2 cavs losing one of our cavs

IBT : we lose a cav on defense at Cori

9) 1758AD : not much

IBT : the remaining Chinese infantry suicides on Cori

10) 1760AD : not much

Mao does not want to talk. All new arrived units I have sent towards the border with Huayna. In the bext couple of turns we should have enough units to go for him again.

At Cori it is quiet for the moment. I am sure Mao os planning something.

There is a great prophet in Madrid.

Constitution is due in 2.

Nicely done markh. :goodjob:

I suspect Mao is building the next set of units to attack us. If you look at the Power graph for the last 50 years you can see a pattern emerging.

I think I prefer to hold off on the attack against Huayna whilst we still have Mao in play. Principally because we can't really use the forces in Cori to help the attack. OTOH I can understand that we don't want to give Huayna to long to rebuild. BTW what are we going to do about his island city?

Turn 0 -1760 AD
MM Timbuktu, Kyoto & Madrid to grow faster. Rush forge in Tadmekka & Nagoya. Rush a theatre in Tiflis.

Turn 1 - 1762 AD
Start a harbour in Nagoya. Kumbi Saleh completes a cannon, barrack less, and starts a forge. Tadmekka begins a lighthouse. Start a library in Niani. The ironclad would have taken ages. Tiflis commences a granary. Move forces towards the front. Save and restart game as it's playing up.

Turn 2 - 1764 AD
Constitution is now known and we start on Economics. Osaka starts work on a cannon. The ironclad in Madrid finishes and I start a cannon. Gao completes a granary and starts a lighthouse.

Turn 3 - 1766 AD
Satsuma finishes a grenadier and starts a theatre to help fight off Hatty's culture. Tadmekka starts a library. Mao is finally willing to talk so I make peace.

Turn 4 - 1768 AD
Seville completes a cavalry and starts a bank. Maygar also completes a cavalry and starts another

Turn 5 - 1770 AD
the peace treaty with Kublai expires. I get some message about a chinese spy.

ChineseSpy.jpg

Barcelona has built an ironclad and starts a frigate. Nara finishes a galleon and starts a library. Osaka starts a market to improve finances. Rush the granary in Tiflis and a forge in Djenne. B*!%@y game is still playing up. Save and reboot system.

Turn 6 - 1772 AD
Nagoya finishes he harbour and starts a library. Djenne starts a cavalry. Tiflis starts work on a lighthouse. An extremely long lived Herodotus tells us we have become more powerful.

Herodotus-1772.jpg

Turn 7 - 1774 AD
We now know Economics and are researching Corporation. What is it with these AIs? Huayna must have got bored as he declares war on innocent us! Disconcerting to note that Kublai now has infantry as well.

Sanchu-1774.jpg

Tokyo finishes a cannon and starts another. Satsuma completes the theatre and starts a rifleman. I start a rifleman in Osaka. Kagoshima carries on producing cannons. We have an incan revolt in Gao. :( Increase the culture slider to 10%. Bump off two cavalry and a cannon by Cori for the loss of one cavalry. With WW back again I decide to wait for Huayna's main attack force whilst I build up Djenne's forces.

Turn 8 - 1776 AD
Barcelona finishes a frigate and begins a cavalry. Kyoto finishes a cannon and starts another. I discover a galleon sleeping in Tokyo. In other news Mansa converts to Hinduism and adopts Organised Religion. I hope he's not getting silly ideas.

Turn 9 - 1778 AD
Edo finishes a cannon and starts a theatre. Madris's cannon is finished and it starts a rifleman Tiflis starts a harbour. Rush the cannon in Kagoshima. Kublai asks for OB but I decline. In other news Hatty has built the Statue of Liberty. Hatty's getting far too knowledgeable. I notice her forces have become more powerful as well.

Turn 10 - 1780 AD
Kagishima starts a cavalry. The iron mine by Timbuktu that I had rebuilt is sabotaged. No prizes for guessing the culprit. Send a small attack force towards Vilcambamba. I've set research to zero to build up funds.

Handover
Apart from Huayna's initial invasion force I haven't seen anything. Perhaps I should have invaded immediately.

Tiwanaka has the Pyramids so we should definitely keep it. State Property would be quite helpful. Perhaps it might be worth keeping Olly for reinforcements. I definitely think we want to wipe out Huayna this time regardless of WW.

Roster :

klarius - on deck
markh
Sam Yeager - just played
Thrallia - up

trippstowe and juballs on automatic skip until they post to be available again.

Good news that Mao made peace finally. I agree that we should wipe out Huayna now.

definitely destroy the Incans. Hopefully I can take him down during my turnset I'll try to take in tonight, but it might be tomorrow.

In terms of research, are we still aiming for Infantry with our tech?

Yes, we do. After economics there is still one prerequisite to research before we can start on assembly line.

We are currently researching Corporation. After that we can research Assembly Line.

The way the AI research is going I suspect we will need Combustion etc. by the end. :(

Ah, yes. That is even better news. Should have read your log more carefully.:)

Thrallia? Bump

sorry, ran into some overtime at work, I won't be able to get to it until the weekend. If that's no problem, I'll take it then, otherwise go ahead and skip me.

RL happens to us all without warning and obviously has to come first.

The odd five minutes to request a early(ish) skip is certainly desirable.

As it happens I think klarius is also unavailable since he has not posted here for a while.

I should just take a skip and let klarius go. I didn't post for a skip because I thought I'd have time to play earlier, then it turned out things took longer than expected, which is when I posted that it'd be this weekend before I could get to it. It looks like I've got other stuff I'll be needing to do tomorrow though, so its up to klarius.

Played :), the save

Summary:
Huayna is in the ropes. One city should fall next turn and his last one a few turns later.
War went pretty smooth and no backstabbing from our friends. :D
Next war will not be as easy and I'm uncertain who should be the target. Wandering through Germany one can see lots of cavs and artillery.
Sneaking a bit into Egypt shows solid infantry defense.
Easiest would probably be Mongolia, but then Mao has a defensive pact with him and will again disturb.
Germany would probably help against anybody but Mao, but that will need probably a few thousand. Maybe we should save some money now instead of speeding toward assembly line (which we are researching currently).

I changed civics. Mainly I wanted nationhood for drafting and added representation and mercantilism.

Turn log:
Turn 0 1780:
Look around and MM our cities. Our cities are trather small, I look for food.
Try to make a battle plan.
A simultaneous attack on Cuzco and Ollantaytambo.
Well, some of the Olla.. troops find a town we don't know up to know.
I may have to few troops for this town and the next. We'll see.

IBT:
Not a good start. Huayna attacks my attackers an kills a grenadier with a rifle at about 20% odds.

Turn 1 1782:
Battle of Andahuaylas (or whetever). To rifles killed at the loss of one grenadier.
Town captured.
MM a little and rush a few things for high overflow.

Turn 2 1784:
MM a little and move troops.
Kill a cav with a cav in the open.
Steenkin' Mao is running his spy around and destroys our improvements (spices).
Buy spices from Bismarck for sheep.

IBT:
Lose 2 cav to rifle attacks. Huayna loses 2 cav.
Gao flips to Inca.
Mao destroys our pig tile.

Turn 3 1786:
Recapture Gao. Still horsehockey town but our gateway to Cuzco.
Kill an Incan resource guard.
I decide to run different civics.
Revolt to representation (we nearly nowhere have enough military to give many happy faces and the biggest cities get 2 from rep),
Nationhood (want to draft in emergencies and regularly in Madrid, where it doesn't hurt. 2 happy from barracks is also nice) and
Mercantilism ( I'm aware free market would give more money, but also feeds Egypt and Germany).

IBT:
A few counters of Huayna to no big consequence.
Turn 4 1788:
Bombardment of Cuzco and Oll... begins.
A missionary from Madrid brings Buddhism to Osaka for a cheap happy face.

Turn 5 1790:
Bloody battle of Ollantaytambo.
6 cannons die (none retreated). But then our grenadiers and cavs have no further losses (killed 5 rifles and 4 cav).
At Cuzco I lose 3 cannons (no retreat :( ). Have not enough troops now, but should fall next turn.
Land a few troops directly from homeland on the Incan island.

Turn 6 1792:
Cuzco falls but costs another cannon.
We are out of anarchy and I begin drafting.
We need to heal now before attacking further and war weariness is already pretty bad.

Turn 7 1794:
Not much happening. Just moving troops.

Turn 8 1796:
Capture the Incan island city at the loss of 1 grenadier.

Turn 9 1798:
Bombardment of Huamanga begins. Some troops also go towards Tiwanaku.

Turn 10 1800:
Further bombardment and moves.

Handoff notes:
Should be no problem to kill Inca in the next few turns.
One thing one should consider before doing so, is that Bismarck and Hatty would declare on Huayna for some money.
The idea would be to use that to cancel their defensive pacts before either attacking them or their friends.
I saved up money up to now to have all options available.

I have a Taoist missionary underway. I hope Taoism will take in Osaka to get another happy.
I also built a settler which is now on the ring. Here I thought to build a town maybe extreme west in Incania.
First so that nobody else builds there and second to receive shipments from the west.

I drafted a rifle very turn in Madrid and I think this should continue as long as there is population just working plain coast tiles. One rifle per pop is just such a bargain.
One more remark. There are lots of cottages which will be never worked because the cities don't have enough food.
I had to irrigate already over some to chain irrigation, because I want water everywhere.
I also doubt that all the lumber mills will be worked.

A nice swift advance klarius. :goodjob:

We do need to remember though that we need a conquest victory rather domination so we will have to be more selective in future about which cities we keep. Having said can I reiterate that we do want to keep Tiwanaku.

@klarius - I don't quite see how getting Hatty & Bismarck to declare on Huayna will get them to cancel their defensive pacts. Besides, only Hatty has a DP and that's with Mansa. Can you please explain it to me.

The idea would be to use that to cancel their defensive pacts before either attacking them or their friends.

Before we attack anyone else I think we need to make use of Huayna's ex cities to build up our forces and science. Especially since Huayna was good enough to build the infrastructure for us.

Who to attack next? I'm quite tempted by the idea of a joint attack on Kublai and Mao. The main question is whether Hatty or Bismarck will backstab us. Another alternative is to attack Hatty & Mansa. However I think that is more likely to bring in Mao and possibly Bismarck and Kublai against us.

The more I think about it Mao is likely to attack us whoever we attack so I think Kublai & Mao should be next. Mao is obviously already attacking us anyway with those thrice cursed spies.

If a civ declares on any other, all defensive pacts it has are canceled. So, if Hatty declares on Huayna there is no pact with Mansa, if we would like to quietly dispatch of him.
Bismarck has a pact with Mao. So if somebody would want to declare on Mao that's not good.
But I think we anyway will not declare on Mao, but rather on Kublai. Mao then declaring on us will cancel the pact.
But there is the problem that Mao might pay his good friend Bismarck for war.

I don't think Mao would declare easily outside of defensive pacts. He might not like us and send his spies, but now we have higher power rating than him.
