SGOTM 02 - Murky Waters

Nice work nfora - looks like the economy is slowly getting back on track

I guess current priorities are:
  • change palace site
  • get CHs out
  • build up army

Suggest:

Cow Island:
  • grow to size 4 and whip CH. Put overflow to warrior (for +1 happy) (we can build stronger defence there later if necessary)
  • keep galley 1E of stone to fogbust

Kyoto
  • no whipping until we lose 1 unhappiness
  • whip CH asap after that - overflow to a worker or to complete wb
  • try to get 2nd scientist when possible

Osaka
  • whip axeman when 1 turn of build left - overflow to palace
  • grow to size 6 (will give 99h to palace with whip)
  • chop for remaining hammers
  • cottage flood plains
  • maybe spread out the garrison to more effectively fogbust

Coppertown
  • continue to whip every 15 turns

Nb.
1. With organised we get +100% towards CH. That means 90h per pop - so we can whip ch with just 2 pop
2. Pillaging the road 3W of Seville may hinder Isabella's economy slightly and will not be seen as an aggressive act by the AI as it is in neutral territory

We finally meet another civ. It's Bismark with a score of 722 and nearly twice our production. We established open borders and traded clams for cows.

My turn was otherwise uneventfull.

Finished workboat in Kyoto and let unhappiness go away then :whipped: courthouse.
Finished granary in Tokyo and started a courthouse.
Whipped Axemen in Osaka to let overflow go into Palace.
Whipped courthouse on cow island and started a library.
After one turn on Palace started another axemen.
Workers have finished another mine near Tokyo for increased production.
Archer has scouted Cordoba to reveal a Galley, Horse Archer, Spearman and Archer.
Seville has 2 Archers, one with +125% city defense.
We have several axemen stationed at our border with Isabella she is cautious.
Discovered Metal Casting and began researching Mathematics.

I tried to upload the file but couldn't connect to the ftp server. Will try again later today.

edit: file uploaded

Cool turn !

Some questions - because until tonight ( my time ) I'm far away from my computer. :)
What are we producing now in Kyoto ? Did you start a forge ?

I'm not so sure that a courthouse and not a barrack is the best option in Coppertown if palace will be soon moved to Osaka .
How many axeman/spearman we have available ?

I'm not sure that after Mathematics woulnd't be better to study Alphabet ... finally ... ;)

Regards all,

Mitiu Ioan aka Ionutz

The CH was whipped on my last turn so it will be completed on the next turn.

I idea behind the CH was for increased research speed.

My logic for going for Math was to get construction next for Catapults.

Looks good

How did you meet Bismark? I presume he is SE of Kyoto. Can we get a galley to his lands

EDIT: Actually, I can see his borders in your Bismark screenshot. I presume a galley will get there with OB?

I will probably build a worker next in Kyoto to improve the cows - then maybe a forge (or a galley if Bismark is in reach)

Hopefully the palace will be finished soon

I'm not sure if a galley will be able to cross that or not.

Edit: Yes it can. See 2nd Screenshot.

Yes - I know this and anyway, that's a valid choice.

My logic for going for Math was to get construction next for Catapults.

Aham - but now we have 2 parteners for tech trading ... and anyway - I belive that we need to start the war with Isabel without catapults ... until first catapults will be "on service" she could get longbowman - and this will be really painfully for us. :(

BIG PIG - you're next ?

If you have the game open, see if it allows you to plot a route there with our Stone Island galley (I'm not advocating we actually use the galley for this - it is needed for fogbusting)

Yes, it can.

The ftp server must be down. I have to go to work. Will try to upload during lunch.

No rush - I probably won't play until tomorrow am GMT.

I think a galley in Kyoto should be next then to explore SE.

PS. I see you're researching masonry in the screenshot?

PPS. You can always post the save game file on this thread

I think when taking the screenshot of the science advisor I accidently clicked the Masonry block. There's no beakers into it.

edit: file uploaded. BP is up next.

Why oh Why is it 400AD and we haven't got alphabet?!?!

Come on guys it is one of the most valuable tech that all the best players/teams ALWAYS beeline for. By the time we get it we will have very little items to trade as the other nations would have traded already.

Oh well, we can get them by war mongering!:goodjob:

Can we confirm our overall aim? I vote Conquest as quick as possible:) .

Once this is sorted it should influence our decisions.

Go BP!

It looks like this SGOTM is geared towards conquest so that is the direction that I went. Hope it is ok with everyone.

My guess on Alphabet and tech trading is that the aggressive AI will be less likely to trade techs.

We should be able to take Seville, Cordoba and Toledo with axemen. We should have catapults by the time we get to Madrid. We might have researched Alphabet by then and ask for some techs in exchange for peace.

I'm for conquest, but I'm not as concerned about speed. I've not managed conquest on more than a duel sized map, so the experience is sure to be educational, win or lose. With regard to the speed issue, while I'm sure we can put in a solid performance, since this is our first game together I'm more concerned with getting to know each other's strengths and weaknesses to prepare for a more serious bid in the next SGOTM (that is, if you guys are interested!). In the meantime, whatever we can manage is great for me!

Seems that, after starting the game, Big Pig have to play another crucial moment - starting the war against Spain.

I'm pretty confident that he will play very well ! :)

Regards and good luck!

Totally agree, good point:goodjob: . We can then have a re-cap, "where we went wrong" e.t.c. It is easy to see where the strength's of people are, I can see at least one good city management/planner and one good strategist. I will hold off on the names yet as we could have a good war mongering general among us!!:)

Well I fear that won't be me - not warmongering early enough is often a weakness in my GOTMs.
I didn't have time to play this morning so will play tonight instead. Before I play I would be intersted in hearing everyone's views on our war strategy. Specifically:
  • what cities are our main objectives
  • 1 pronged attack or two?
  • how many units in our SOD?

Once we declare our units will be put back into our borders by coppertown. She will probably send some units from Cordoba towards us, my guess would be the horse archer and spearman. She will also send units from Madrid and Barcelona but we have less intel on what they will be. I'm guessing horse archers, axemen and swordsmen. We should first go on the defensive to lure her units out into the open. If we're very lucky the +125% city garrison archer will come out of the city.

Cordoba, once emptied of units, will fall easily. After Cordoba then go for Seville. By then we should have built more units in Osaka to take Toledo with. If we want, we could get a peace deal at this point or attempt to get Barcelona, depending on how things look.

What does SOD stand for?
