SGOTM 02 - Team CFR

Well, okay, maybe conquest wasn't possible... especially given the make-up of our team. None of our members, including myself, had ever won a game by conquest or domination. I still haven't. So, even winning the game without losing Osaka may have been tough since a conquest victory was against our habits. Clearly, losing Osaka spelled doom for us builders.

As far as the Bismark's borders, that was another strike against you. I wouldn't say it unbalanced the game though, as the fastest teching teams got optics fast enough to find all of the AIs with caravels before their galley could have. Anyway, this was not what I would call a flaw in the game design.
About Bismark's borders.. I wanted to make a way for teams to make contact if they were slow at researching optics, so I had to place the city at a certain distance away..
If I had placed the capital one tile closer however, it would have meant that everyone would have gotten contact much earlier (around 500BC or so I think), which would make it pretty much impossible to get an edge by researching optics before border expansions.
However at the distance it had to be placed, there was no sure way to make the contact occur at a specific time due to randomness in what wonders would be constructed in Berlin. This randomness meant that most teams would get contact around 500AD, while some was around 1000AD and I think one team got contact in the BCs.

Gyathaar, what do you think about posting a kind of spoiler or after-action-report from the designer's point of view?

Something along the lines of,

I came to think of this map when...
I wanted to present the following challenges to the teams...
I modified the map in such-and-such way in order to...
I placed such-and-such traps for the careless teams to get into...
I created such-and-such hidden opportunities for the teams clever enough to benefit from them...
On average, the teams did better/worse/same as I thought they would...
Teams A and B surprised me by managing to do X and Y, I didn't think it was possible...
Overall, I imagined the best strategy for this map to be like this: ...

That would be Memphis Blues, 85BC. Bismark built the Mids and the GLH in Berlin. So that certainly worked in our favor. On the other hand, some teams were able to capture the Mids in Madrid and use it much earlier. There's nothing that can be done about randomness like this. And it hardly matters when CFR gets Optics ridiculously early. :p

I can answer that one easilly... I didnt really have an idea for the map, so I was generating maps randomly.. then got the map you played in this SGOTM...

and I thought.. what would happen if I place an island in the middle of the lake in the C shaped continent, and let them have a capital there instead of the contienent where the settler was (I eventually added 2 more islands)

In original map you started alone on the 2nd continent, but I imagined it would be too boring in a sgom to play isolated untill you researched optics, so I added some land and a starting position for spain in north end of the continent (and added enough resources there to be sure isabella would cause atleast some problems for the teams :p )

As for the great osaka start location... it was a late game change, which I added after the pregame discussions had started... it was to adress worries I had about that some teams would underestimate how expansive the 2 split towns would be, so I wanted to lessen the burden on the weaker teams.. (and also create a setup so going for a city location with bronze much more expencive..)

The start location was surrounded by 3 spanish scouts.. this was to help keeping barbarian animals at bay to raise survival rate for teams that planed to delay settling till after researching a tech or two.. as a bonus it really confused some teams about where Isabella lived

Anyone wants to try to replay FUBAR's game from their first save after loosing Osaka? I would have tried that, if only I had the time.

Well, replaying the game before the end of the competition is actually not a good idea. IMHO, the "copyright" of any SG belongs to the team which had actually played that and it might be possible to do but only with their permission and after this tournament is finished.

 IMHO, this map is one of the best among your creations so far. And it is  . :goodjob:

I could care less about playing our save. However, it would be almost the same if you just start with the original save and disband the settler and warrior after meeting Isabella. Although, there may be no way to recreate the unlucky happenstance of metting the "C" AI civs late (Bismarck not building wonders in capital).

Congrats, guys! I'll have to have a read through and see how you got there so fast. See you in SGOTM 03!
Thank you! It looks like we will see more strong teams in SGOTM 03! So, competition will be harder...
