SGOTM 02 - VQ Black

sure does Bob

In 1766 I have another painfull decision to make... HC has 2 cities in nasty places.... One spot our units are just pasing (in the war on KK) and the other up north (former China).
I deside its not worth having to turn around for these and declare war on HC.
In 1768 one thorn (Vitcos) is removed... at the cost of 1 Grenadier  that shouldn't have died... Well those are the odds I guess.... (remember the 32% wins tho :))

Meanwhile back on Hokaido our troops have been shipped to the eastern tip where small speck of KK remains/ed. Tiflis is Razed at the cost (again) of 1 good Grenadier :(

But Hokkaido is CLEAN. I later see that HC has a LB/Settler set on the Island that I forgot... Please remove that mess ;)

Somewhat overconfident due to our progress on our western front I march forward once again on Mycenian. Only to fall into the same "trap" as our invasion force is cut down in size. Tho this time its a bit less one sided we do lose quite a few units at the western front...

1770 Tabriz on the eastern front is UP... The samurai losses to a Cannon after the cannon get 5! Consequtive wins. The Cannons remains with just 20HP (1 hit of the samurai would have been enough)
Tabriz is razed (no screenies sorry)

Essen was razed in 1770, the units left are heavily damaged due to repeated cannon attacks and the screeny is missing a few attacks I think.

But most important, Razed (couldnt hope to keep it I think and we are allready on 50% domination)

Some lonesome cowbow named Mansa is the first to actually land units on BT and we have a problem (actually I am leaving a right mess of things)
The boats that landed the units paid the ultimate price for doing so. We dont have the galleons or the force to really respond to this. I am hoping that MM will pillage the cows and bomb the city in favour of attacking it.

HC thinks he is cute, trying to get some Cavalry to Hokaido? This time we are really lucky that the Frigates are close to intercept... The Frigates were (pre)bombing Tiwanaka for the force gathering on the east of Hokaido to be shipped to West Incan lands (and/or take out China?)

WW is getting plain UGLY ! Check out Osaka +24 WW ! But a lot of that should disappear once we take out KK... Who is down to 1 city :)

KK's last stronghold is 3 tiles away Ning-Hsai (2 tiles walk 3rd tile = city)

Please find the turnlog (all 1700 lines of it) attached and the save is here

My western front "work" is less impresive and as a result we are seriously stagnated over there....
The great unit loss we took there is also noticable in the Powergraph on the progress page... :(

The last bit of HC up in Former china...

Kyoto and Edo had their nets pillaged by Mansa :( Kyoto is still whippable as long as we can maintian the Engineer there. Workboats are in progress in both Edo and Kagoshima.

The domination "clock" I think we should keep Ning Hsia as a sort of middle point where troops can heal and be upgraded (if still needed).

We also need to conserve some Cash I think, I build mainly cannons, pikes and Crossbows... and upgraded them. But we may need to stop that ... and start hand building the (expensive) Grenadiers.

Our current unit status

And finaly the part I am *ahem* most proud off (I really screwed this up ROYALY ! ) Bismarck is NOT willing to even talk to us, eventho I raze 4 of his cities... Maybe I should have kept Essen now that I look again. Quite some CG upgraded Grens in there :(
Some of the stack and the boats still have movements. Tho I am torn between fortifying them on the hill and Loading them in the boat. There is a Medic (samurai) in that (mini) stack. So if Bismarck keeps away for 1 or 2 turns they should be good to go (again)
The Berlin front

The Mycenian front... This is going to HURT. Tho maybe we can take the city (if we end up a little lucky)

The "to big" stack is mostly cannons, I had the option to withdraw (and surely lose everything) or merge 2 stacks and hope we have something to show for it. I obviously choice the later.

So is there anyone we're not currently at war with?!?!?!

I'm kinda glad that I'm not due up anytime soon, this is going to be a fun mess to get out of.

Have we cleaned up most of the sea or are there still roaming bands of evil AI ships?

Cause it looks like Frankfurt is prepping another naval invasion force.

We are at war with everybody. LOL

NamliaM you crazy warrior man (what's you got a Hitler complex) and take on the whole world.

General I will have war with all of them with their insulting settlers on our land. But mein Fuhrer das ist nicht gut on four fronts ist besser on zwei ja. NEIN dumkopf we shall kill zem all ja.

It appears Lord Vader will have to intervene and engage the darkside. You did well but look to the distance and Huyana is also preparing for troops our way. Fortunately he is a stupid AI and will go for one front likely the KK line. We must advance immediately on KK and finish him off but I would recommend taking a defensive posture in Germany and find the high ground.
Let Bismarck waste his troops engaging a defensive position. I do see we are ready to take the city with Versailles (forget the name and too lazy to look) has a huge force but will be plummeted in my opinion and should maybe, (maybe) pull back to preserve them for a future battle. The troops approaching (wounded) small number I will get on board the ships and move them to safer ground for now.

Naval sitituation is going to be a problem against ironclads and we will have to tread the shores carefully when unloading. We same to be safe on the Hokkaido side so still can get troops from there.

Question for all:
If we can make peace with Bismarck for tech do we take it and press on depending on what happens in the next few turns. (the next 20 turns of this game are critical and using a bit of strategy might get us by.)

Tough turn for you Namliam. I would have left HC alone personally but that's OK you be the crazy Fuhrer and I will be one of the generals preferably my favorite "The Desert Fox" General Rommel.

EDIT: This is "I got it" and am looking at the save right now and thinking about starting. Am looking long and hard to strategic situation. Looks bad on German front but isn't really I feel but there will be losses.

At least we got lots of cannons; may be an idea to start having some cannon with barrage or combat to go against the roaming stacks; loads of fighting but what the heck we're war-mongering and aiming for conquest.

Hitting Enter
General looks back and see that the tactical is not so good in Germany. Very good on the western front and soon be able to finish Khan. Back home the Fuhrer is screaming again ze ways we must do it or else ja…….alzo we do dis dan ja. Der Volk is not so happy with the crazy Fuhrer and it’s really showing. OUCH…….

After a word the minister of propaganda the people are somewhat appeased with a increase of culture to 80%. Our grand military has taken a severe blow by the Germans and loose 10-15 grennies at Mycenia. (reminds me of Patton). The last commander was losing them like flies too and we are certainly needing to withdraw from this point and heal to fight a battle for another day.

Turn 1

Pull back from Mycenia only wasting troops there that are severely wounded. Not the best position for them to pull back to but staying at the city makes is more likely to loose more. Try to move more soldiers to help protect the stack but cannot reach it.

After some MMing (argh) notice that the Bismarck is willing to converse. I approach him and he is willing to sign for peace and offers us 540 gold. I decide perhaps the Fuhrer might not be so happy but as a military officer I see no sense in wasting our fine troops. They can battle for another day and make our great empire proud. Too waste them is only dying without Honour.

Able to move culture slider back to 40%.

Take Andasomething and raze it with no losses.

Civ4ScreenShot0514.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0515.jpg

Turn 2

Frigate takes out a galley. Almost intercept HC’s galleon.
Loose two frigates to Huyana on east coast. Use galleons to finish off HC’s frigate/galleon/with cavalry on board heading for Hokkaido.

Turn 3

Take out galleon with HC’s settler and guard. Galleons vulnerable on east coast no frigates to protect them but moving two ships to help.

Turn 4

Raze that settled town on Hokkaido.
Bombard Ning-hsia 0% Units took some hits from Cannons. MM attacking on German front.

Civ4ScreenShot0516.jpg

Turn 5

Take two of HC’s Cav out.
Take out small stack from MM
MM takes Edo (turn before oh well doh doh doh doh)
Negotiate peace with MM and get Edo back.

We take Ning-hsia and keep it for a place to hang and have a beer. Native don’t like us much.

Oh yeh the Khan empire has been destroyed. MOHAAAAAA

Civ4ScreenShot0517.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0518.jpg

Turn 6

Take out another 2 cav
Bombard Vilcas
Discover sci Meth (yep obsoletes some things but why have those scientist sitting smoking cigarettes.)

Trade some stuff with Bismarck for 5 gold. Maybe he lightens up on us. HAHAHAHA me silly we got -10 razing with him.

Civ4ScreenShot0519.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0520.jpg

Turn 7

Capture Vilcas and raze it.
Take some hits again and take out 2 cavalry and 1 gren

Civ4ScreenShot0521.jpg

Turn 8

Land more troops on HC. Stack for Bismarck almost healed and ready to battle soon. We need cavalry (and lots) for defense against Cavalry attacking us. We need Cavalry to counter them in the stacks and for quick advances when needed. I hate move one tile at a time when a stack of Cavalry can move deep fast and do some damage. We are loosing quite a few grens against them. That’s what killed us in the German campaign is having no counter for the cavalry. The cavalry are ideal for that so please build some and make a fair sized stack of them to accompany grens and cannons.

Turn 9

Moving on Huamanga.

Turn 10

We discover Replaceable Parts. We have so much cash and if we had enough cavalry we could preserve our grens then we won’t need a lot more grennies. We probably lost 30-45 grennies between my turn and Namliam’s turn.

I put it on SteamPower at 100% to get us at least Ironclads to have better naval defenses. Kyoto with Ironclads would be hard to take. Only about 2000 gold at 4 turns and leaves us with over 1600 gold and after that go back to 0%. I just want to be sure we are able to keep some kind of superiority on the water. So far we haven't had too much trouble with it but it needs to be addressed.

Wow peace with Germany for only 550g? Who would have guessed that.. Good move in preserving what is left of the Western front.

 on losing Edo was they the units that MM landed there earlier? We should have been able to take them out IMHO...

Formation Grens > Cavs because Grens get defensive bonusses. However I found us sorely lacking in that department. We have quite a few aggresive (CR) Grens but are way low on Formation/Combat Grens...

Ironclads can only travel on the coast or in culture I dont see the need for Ironclads in BT. 2 Frigates can handle any old Ironclad and I dont think we should see more than 1 or 2 in BT. Getting Ironclads to the front lines is going to be a long journey...

Nice turns General Rommel.... and so quick...

Got it. Had a quick look. Steam power is so-so but may open up railroads;machine guns are reasonable stack defenders and railways would speed up reinforcements.

My thinking is to protect our galleons when we try to land again on Bismarcks shores. We need some ironclads built locally to keep them safe imo. It doesn't matter if you want to stop it and go back to 0% by all means. If anything we could just get rifling in 4 turns at 100% and have a better unit that goes against cavalry. (+50% against mounted units) We can't afford to loose 10-15 units in one shot and need to address that. The WW from that just goes out of sight and it cripples our cities.

There is a huge stack ready at Bismarck's border but I really think we should add at least 2 or 3 more cavalry to counter cavalry attacking us. The grennies are for the most part city raiders and we should think about just building grens for a while with the combat promotion. BTW cannons do well with combat promotion against attacking units. Once we finish with a the cavalry we started go back to grens and forget about pikes/crossbow for now.

The bismarck is pretty strong and once we declare avoid moving the units into a vulnerable position and wait for bismarck to attack on a defensive ground. That way he will waste his units instead of us wasting ours. Once he slows down we can move in on Mycenia and start our attack.

HC is also strong and has quite a few units in the city on the coast not far from the city Vilcas which has been razed. I chose Huamanga as it seems the least heavily defended and can be taken in the next turn. There too we are losing units to cavalry even on a hill. I have brought some cavalry into that stack as well to help protect against cavalry and it has helped.

As to Edo I tried to take out MM and lost at very good odds. It left a non experienced gren in there and he couldn't defend against a gren/cannon/and knight. Was going to get more troops there but forgot and moved them to the Bismarck pile instead. We probably lost some buildings there and we should have taken his ship out before he landed those troops. Ergo my thinking of needing a couple of Ironclads which are much better against frigates then frigates against frigate which usually have about 50% odds and usually need two of them to take out one. Ironclads would take out one to one and still have some umph to take out another.

EDIT: Huamanga has been fortified since I arrived there. The rest of HC's cities are lightly defended though. So I think his army is in the two forward cities facing our front and that's about it. So it shouldn't take much more to finish him off. We have a fair sized army grouping there as well. Also NamliaM where you had the army at the city has no defensive bonuses for anyone including grens. So in a situation where there is no defensive bonus cavalry or rifleman are ideal to counter cavalry attacks. I hate to harp on this about the cavalry but aftering watching a huge army diminish by 15 units or so I am adament it needs to be dealt with. In addition in my solo games I use them a lot mostly for a forward offensive to clear the way for the army that follows. (just hate those 1 tile at a time crap) We were sitting ducks in Germany so please guys believe me, either cavalry or rifleman need to accompany the stacks from now on. HC & Bismarck are using lots of cavalry right now. Oh yeah did I say anything about cavalry. (too bad they aren't cossacks then we could truly rule the world).

Going for Ironclads is just plain wastefull... we just need to
1) Cover BT a bit (southeast of Kyoto where the culture touches)
2) Make sure we never end a turn within 2 tiles of a Ironclad on the coast. i.e. end the turn on a non cultured ocean tile.

Getting riffles kindoff makes sence at the moment.... Tho we lose the ability to build CR units. So I think we should whip up some CR units ASAP before getting Riffling then.... Getting physics and Industrialism or Physics and Artilary is out of the question I think.

I would spam Crossbows if we need "regular" grennies... Crossbows are 90 hammers vs 150 of a grennie... Yes they cost gold to upgrade.... But we earn that back with hammers...

I was to hungry to take Mycenian... This is one lesson I will remember for a while... :( Things were going so good in razing the 3 nothern German towns and Removing KK... I got into a razing frenzy of some kind.... and just couldnt stop myself ...

On Edo... Yes the Galleon/Frigate slipped past me, also due to the galleons that were on watch were pulled over to Essen (I think) to transport troops in german waters... Another bad mistake...
There were 2 cannons in Kyoto (atleast) that could have helped... I think we should have been able to keep Edo... Realisticaly how many more (water) strikes will the AI send our way? They allready send 1 on BT? And 1 on Hokkaido...
For defensive purposes the Ironclad is just to expensive and to slow only 2 move and only within our borders. If a Galleon is parked(without Frigate escort) right outside our borders there is nothing we can do about it ! And next turn the units will still land...
Ironclads... I havent build a single one since I been playing CIV. The rate very high on my most u.....s unit ever list...

Yeah yeah MEA CULPA on the :smoke: move(s) near Mycinian... I allready said I wasnt proud of that... I should have kept to razing those 3 cities and gone into hidding in our own cities... Instead of marching out... Grens stand a much better chance in a city... + with cannons on OFFENCE instead of Defence... Boy thats lesson #2 for me.... Cannons (and other seige weapons are offencive weaponry... NOT defensive...)

I rarely build Ironclads as well only when I want to defend the coasts from frigates. So perhaps going for rifling might be an idea once we get enough CR grennies as suggested. Don't forget we still can make CR cannons. As to tech we should have the game over by industrialism. But Railroad would be nice to speed things up and after steam power is available.

I think go for rifling slow burn and get the cash flowing again. Madrid is still the only unhappy so maybe move CS up 10%. Probably will need more once we start on Bismarck. We could declare and just leave the armies positioned where they are at and they will hold up well especially the one in the jungle. That's if he will attack the stack or go for the nearest city. He seemed to be after the stacks last time and it would be nice if he repeated that trend whilst the huge stack is sitting in a jungle with 50% defense. The smaller army is not in a good defensive position and maybe should go into the city.

BTW we all get ourselves in a twist when the bloodlust flows sometimes so don't be defensive about it as I think you did a fine job considering what you were up against. I am glad bismarck made peace as I am pretty sure we would have lost the whole army there. (only cannons and two grens left against numerous cavalry)

Played a couple of turns; whipped heavily (some bleeding heart liberals seem to have got soft on this), produced half a dozen more cav. Huamanga is history, cost me about six cannon but all them hosses and rifles is dead. Edit: cannon against cavalry is a one sided contest (in favour of the cannon!), think charge of the light brigade.

Cavalry get a bonus vs Cannons right? Maybe with some CR promotions the cannons may be in favour...

I would get Riffles ASAP (or atleast get it to within 1 turn of research on high % and mass some upgradable grunt i.e. Pikes and Crossbows)
and forget about railroads.... for a while...
Ones we have Riffling we will not be upgrading anymore and all we then need to do is to finance the last upgrades and balance income vs culture and Science....

Germany and Incan lands should allready be railed.... :(

:dubious: What happenned to "who needs riflemen"? ;)

Just giving ya a hard time namliaM. :spank: I know I've changed my mind about a thousand times in this game. I think our tech choices have been good and without the beeline to grens and cannons, we probably wouldn't have had the success that we're having now.

It looks like things have certainly been interesting to say the least. I know we planned to kill everybody but I'm not sure taking them all on at once was the plan. Oh well, sooner is better than later I guess. It looks like Rommel has managed to get us back to a one front war. I wouldn't be surprised though if HC manages to get Bismarck back into the game before we finish HC. On the up side, having hit all of them means they have all had to switch to a war footing and therefore will not be sailing away in the tech race. I just hope we can finish this before too many MGs start popping up in Bismarck's cities.

hasnt been any progress in the ratpacks "line" on the progress page... Did they finish? And did we just pass them ???
Spoiler For LTB :

Oh about Riffles... I dont think we need them... Just going with the flow on this one... My honest oppinion: Quit the techs allready, build pikes/Crossbows promote them to Formation and Grens...
Add in a few Cavalry that can backup/support, mix in a few cannons too and we are done...
We are just lacking that at the moment.... No bleeding riffles...

Be suprised if they finished with a down trend on the score... unless they somehow got conquested back...

Re ratpack: score went down, power shot up, I suspect massive whipping.

Re VQ Black; up to 1810; not defeated yet.

Built some units (see power graph).Still at peace with Germany, couple of small stacks in egypt if anyone feels adventurous. Quite a bit of whipping this round, mainly cavalary and cannon.
War against HC proceeds slowly:
1794: capture Huamanga,raze.
1802: capture Ollantayambo, raze.
1802 declare war on Mao.
1806. capture Hangzhou, raze. End of China.
1810. capture Machu Pichu, keep (nice wonder).

Overall ended up with more units than we started.
Finished researching steam power, then switched off research.
War weariness remains a major problem.
Built a couple of jewish missionaries to spread the word in ringworld.
No major disasters, no strokes of brilliance. HC doesn't appear to have any major stacks left so should be able to polish him off next round, or maybe peace for techs and start on Mansa (and/or Biz)
