SGOTM 02 - VQ Red

Thanks for the response, Alan. Turn out to be false alarm afterall, since Scowler did not commit any move. I figured something similar (albiet unlikely) may occur to some other team, so that's why I chose to post in Maintenance thread instead of PMing you.

No harm done guys, and hope you resolve your M$ Windoze problem soon, and rejoin the action, scowler! We have a laurel (or perhaps, spoon) waiting for us!

so we are now accepting defeat. :(

No way, but we're not going to win it ;)

Well, I did the best I could, all things considered. I'm rushed right now (being a Friday night and all) but here are the short notes:

1. Khan's fleet is mostly gone, though he keeps showing up with Frigates. I had good and bad luck fighting them, as we only have frigates to defend. I should have just parked one on all of our food resources so he'd run away. :smoke: His army is stranded on Edo (which he obviously captured when I pressed enter.)

2. I declared on Hatty, seeing how vulnerable she was. Captured 2 cities and 2 more should fall next turn. I think, if we keep sending grens over as reinforcements from Kyoto, we can take her out in one fell swoop.

3. Steel comes in 8 turns, though we might want to upgrade a CR2 Samurai first.

4. Bismarck and Hatty made peace not long after I declared.

5. Huayna built the Kremlin in 1568! He's really advanced. Fortunately:

5. Huayna is getting ready to declare on someone! I don't think it will be us since we're not last in power anymore, but who knows... we need more frigates in the islands I think just in case. Hopefully he declares on Mansa.

dot has to ask for a skip. :( I've got a busy week coming up. Sorry guys.

Ok, I think I am officcially back up and running... after a new power supply, video card, and windows reinstall, I think my system is (finally) stable.

If no one objects, I can slide in after GreyFox?

Nothing makes me think this isn't winnable... we might even have the spoons in sight! :)

I'm back now too, so I'll be able to play after you, Maquis :)

EDIT: And, ladies and gentlemen, I think we owe a certain member of our team an apology for not paying attention...

Turn 10 - 1448 AD

Ladies and Gentlemen, what will we do, when he strikes?

Anyway, Maquis, if you can play within 6 hrs (your evening time, I believe), go ahead.

I didn't get time to play, so GreyFox can go ahead with his turn.

I'm planning on playing tonight if GreyFox gets his turns done...

This game is running very slowly on my comp, so I played only 7 turns ... this brings us to a good number anyway,

1589AD (0):

Looks good. Did some reassignment of pop.
Trade with HC: crab for 9gpt > crab for 10gpt
Trade with MM; new > rice for 6gpt
Trade with Bismarck: new > deer for cow

vqred-AD1604-atk-Awdaghost.jpg

Huh? One pathetic Pikeman and a musket only??? Hatty my love, let me teach you a thing or two abt defenses:

- Grenie kills Musketman at 99% (10.3/12)
- Grenie kills Pikeman at 99.9% (12/12)

Captured Awdaghost. I keep it, since it has space for growth

>>> The Save (1610AD) <<<

Points to Note:

- I am heading a stack towards the Hindu Holu City ... not sure abt the defenses there, but expect at least some LBM and knights.

- Our defenses is pathetic ... I would delay sending anymore troops from Osaka land to the donut ... each city should have at least 2 defenders (archers ain't defenders in this age).

- I have a nagging feeling that HC may declare on us. Beware.

- KK still want gold for peace, although he is giving us a 10% discount now:

vqred-AD1610-KK-peace.jpg

- Hatty is not willing to part with any tech:

vqred-AD1610-Hatty-peace.jpg

I suggest taking a peek at the holy city, and take it if possible, else pillage and then accept peace. We need some money and some breathing space for cannons build.

- WW is already starting to have effect in Oskaa land. I started some temple builds.

--

does the hindu holy city have the the shrine? if so it may be worth it to become a priority. we could raise our science % or support more troops/upgrades. if not we would still need the GP before it would be worth having. although it would be more points to just have it.

Okay, maybe its my fault for forgetting to provide a link to the save in my report, but the got-it is still taking too long.

Scowler can grab it if you want to.

--

How do you tell whether there is a shrine or not in an AI's city? I guess since hindu is spread all around the donut, Hatty should have a shrine, stupid as she is.

--

A zoomed-in view (and a glance at the Wonders list) reveals that Memphis has the Hindu shrine and the Spiral Minaret, but no Islamic shrine yet (it is a Holy Holy city!)

I'll assume that Maquis is still busy and take the save. Probably play sometime today, but not yet sure when.

Objectives for this turnset:

1) Capture Memphis, if possible
2) Defence of the Realm
3) Beware of HC

First thing I did was move our stack of units up to the gates of Memphis to see how good the defenses are:

civilization42006092810024468nj6.jpg

Not too bad, I guess. Unfortunately, by the time the cats had pounded the defenses down to 0% Hatty had researched Rifling and upgraded her units. Perhaps I should have been more daring. This is how things how things stand at the end of the turnset:

civilization42006092811524845uk6.jpg

I have left it up to the next player whether he wishes to try his luck...

Steel was completed on turn 1 and I set research to Printing Press, reasoning that we need money more than beakers at the moment, it brings us closer to lumbermills, and we will be too busy with military needs for a while to build any universities. Why not Military Tradition? Because I got it in a trade from Mansa a few turns later.

civilization42006092810444501gz6.jpg

I kept the monopoly on Steel for as long as I dared, but the other civs are clearly further ahead and I didn't want to risk losing out (plus cavalry gets a bonus vs. cannons anyway). As far as I can see, Mansa has not given Steel to anybody else yet.

I then concentrated in building more defenders in Osaka-land, until we received some unwanted visitors:

civilization42006092810332821fo8.jpg

Fortunately just a small force (I don't suppose Hatty has enough units to spare), but I hid our galleons in various cities for safekeeping. The biggest worry was that Barcelona had just a single spearman defending, so I upgraded him and whipped a gren, which was enough to kill Hatty's gren when it attacked. Unfortunately, the worker you can see in the above pic had no movement points and so got killed by the knight.

However, the main news of the turnset was something we had been expecting:

civilization42006092811174034sh6.jpg

And this is where I ended my round, so that we can decide what to do. As yet, HC has only sent two archers(!) against us, but his power graph is so high that there is bound to be trouble brewing...

civilization42006092811522192zr8.jpg

civilization42006092811291162vy7.jpg

We are still at war with both Khan and Hatty. Khan has made no futher assaults, but I saw no reason to agree to peace with his terms becoming more favourable with each passing turn. This is what he is currently offering:

civilization42006092811282118yd0.jpg

On the other hand, we appear to have hit a brick wall with Hatty. We will certainly get no further than Memphis. Also, it was probably not a good idea to keep Awdaghost as the city has been swamped by the culture of Hatty and Mansa, and is now being blockaded into starvation.

civilization42006092811523603bi5.jpg

Unless we end this war right away the city will quickly find itself down to a population of 1. This is what Hatty will give us for a cease-fire:

civilization42006092811283731bd3.jpg

Maybe we should get these two beauties out of our hair so that we can concentrate on welcoming our Incan invader...
