SGOTM 02 - VQ Red

i've been feelin' under weather today and have not/will not be able to play more.

scowler, go ahead and finish my set when you play yours. :) gonna have several turns of re-routing troops. don't forget to continue whipping kyoto every other turn.

Don't worry, Codeman, I'll take a closer look at this tonight and see what comes to mind.

We need some ships to protect our resources in the eye of the donut

My thoughts
swith the whipping project in kyoto from samari to ironclad for a couple ships. then probably good to switch to grens. we could also drop to 0% science for a couple turns and do the upgrade of cats to cannons and others to some grens. that is conditional, can you upgrade a unit outside your borders but in friendly territory? i don't remember...

Hello guys, what's this slacking up? This game has virtually slowed from warp-speed to a crawl.

--

No, you can't upgrade units outside your territorities. I don't know if it is worth falling to 0% science for a couple of CRs Grens, they are powerful, but cannons may do us good as well. We are leaps behind the AIs in tech, going 0% science might hurt us further. However, once real battle starts, we might get some money to fund deflicit research, so it might be doable.

The Save

Thank you greyfox. on all counts. i think the slow up started with me and my . i apologize.
it won't happen again.

it will take 10 turns to march around the ring to the first mongolian city (old sarai). it will take approximately 8-10 to send galleons to pick up troops and deposit them in mongolian territory. but we only only have 2 so this is not an option. we could get the ironclads whipped in the amount of time it will take to get to old sarai. take old sarai with current force while we whip grens in kyoto. after revolt upgrade units in old sarai if necessary.

but with KK only annoyed is it a real war? could we get mm to join in? should we hold, get peace in 10 and contin on hatty? the longer we have troops outside our borders the more maint it costs us. scientists will be in osaka in a couple turns for academy.

edit: team, greyfox is right about the speed. VQBlack has left us in the dust.

er... yes!!!

could we get mm to join in?

Nope, he ain't interested in anything we might have to offer.

And I'm sorry about not playing sooner but I haven't had enough sleep over the last few days what with work and stuff so I've been too tired to play until now. I was going to play tonight, and then I saw that screen above and had to lie down again...

So yes, it is a genuine war and I think we will lose Edo next turn. The only thing to do is upgrade the single defending warrior to a gren, change the longbow in production to a gren and whip it NOW. Even then, versus 3 frigs and 3 cats our defenses are nullified and I doubt 2 grens will hold out against 2 grens + 4 knights.

We also have no option but to slam research to zero for some turns in order to upgrade units elsewhere. As Codeman said our army is 10 turns away from Mongolia and can't be upgraded in the meantime. We have not much in the way of defense in Osaka-land if Khan decides to land there too. In short, we have to think about our immediate defense before we can even consider going on the attack.

Just what are we going to do with those Great People? Academies would be nice, but I'm wondering now whether a Golden Age might be better now? Lightbulb techs are Education (Engineer) and Steel (Scientist). So we could use the spare Scientist to speed Steel to get cannons?

It's nearly 2.30am now and I've been up waaay too long, so I won't be playing tonight. But if anyone has any grand plans to solve these problems I'd love to hear them before I play tomorrow... :)

okay...:hmm:

is it worth the cost to upgrade in edo? maybe use this elswhere, but if edo is a total loss for now...

can we lightbulb a tech mm would like? that trade i made with mm may have been the worst move of the game. sorry. interesting how one trade can mess up such well laid plans.

You may be right about writing off Edo...

Mansa already has Education, and the scientist won't complete Steel for us, with 0% science delaying things even longer. So unless he is willing to attack Khan out of the goodness of his heart (unlikely), I guess we are on our own.

what else can kk do? all other cities in the ring are safe for now. i don't think he will try a real 2 front assault. just some pillaging and bombing.

True, although pillaging in the islands will set us back a fair bit. And I think I will try my luck with Edo. Its only money, and maybe the RNG will be in our favour this time...

Anyway, the problem can wait til tomorrow. I'm heading off to bed as I'm too tired to think clearly at the moment.

  Sorry I've been so quiet lately, I've had a few job interviews in the last week and some other things that are keeping me busy.

I need to take some responsibility for the whole KK thing - I knew he was eventually planning to declare war on somebody, but I was almost positive he'd declare on Mansa. I guess not, sheesh. We probably shouldn't have traded him Astronomy...

We might have a chance to save Edo if we whip/upgrade. Doubtful, but there's a shot at it - maybe Khan will be dumb and use his cats to drop the island's culture first...

Still, I agree with getting some ironclads to sink that fleet. Sink his ships, and our other islands are safe.

Right, that's settled then: I'll do what I can to defend Edo, use one of the Scientists to hurry Steel, and get some Ironclads .

I'm off to play, so now would be a good time to pray to the RNGod  and offer sacrifices of woolly lambs, nubile virgins, mothers-in-law... :mischief:

Dammit! Somebody up there really doesn't want me to play these turns!

I did a Windows update this morning, and since then I keep getting a BSOD every time I try to load Windows. Unfortunately, my laptop won't run Civ, so I won't be able to play at all until I've isolated and fixed the problem.

@ GreyFox: sorry, but this means I won't be able to play VQ08 either for the time being. I'll post there to let Cosmichael know.

Apologies to everybody else for holding up the game yet again.

Armstrong or Krockel - if one of you is free tonight then please take the save. Please consider me OOP for the time being.

Scowler: did you upload the save?? According to SGOTM rules, we must play from where you left off.

Also, seeing that you won't be playing any Civ, its perhaps a perfect time for you to be posting in the Spoiler thread. You are, afterall, the ChrTh-appointed scribe.

Armstrong is UP, dot on on deck.

 We are down to 4!

RNG help us!

guessing since he can not load windows he can not upload the save. so what does this mean for the VQ Red team?

i'm off to play civ. tomorrow team.

Did you play any turns Scowler? When was the screenshot taken? You need to upload your save before we continue (if you pressed <enter> at all.)

I'm ready to take it when things get sorted out.

Well, he could always slot in a knoppix liveCD to retrieve the save ... :cooool:

so what does this mean for the VQ Red team?

I will need to PM AlanH or maybe ask the question on the Maintenance List. But I don't see any possibility other than:
- (A) retire now, and wait to receive the wooden spoon award; or
- (B) play from the most recent save, and if possible duplicate Scowler's move (if he would care to provide details).

In the meantime, I would suggest that armstrong to download the latest save (dated 1559AD, uploaded by codeman) from the Civ4 SGOTM Results Page and prepare to play from there.

Edit: posted in Maintenance Thread

I didn't upload a save because I never got to start my turnset! (I thought that was clear from what I said). To clarify: the screenshot I posted was taken from Codeman's save; it was when I saw that situation that I made the comments above to be sure of what the team wanted prior to playing.

Regarding the scribe's report - yes, I can do that instead.

As for the computer - I've got Windows loading now, and even got onto CFC for a short time, but it is still crashing frequently so I'll probably just do a complete install when I have time.

Sounds like you just continue from the past posted save. No problems :)
