SGOTM 03 - Geezers

Doesn't the AI usually counter attack? With the galleys and that many archers is it likely he may try and land troops near the iron to try and take Sparta back?

No, we can't. The option is "No city razing". I think I mentioned this a few times.:)

 Whoops....

Despite that minor oversight I still think we need to finish off Alex. We also need to see if we can sink his galley if it ventures forth. Hopefully Alex will concentrate on rebuilding it rather than archers he said optmistically.

Not necessarily. If the odds are too bad they will not attack. They are not that suicidal any more.:)

Ha, just noticed I am up. :crazyeye: I got it. After a first look at it it looks very good.

Athens doesn't look too bad. It can finance itself quite soon once we have it, so I would be convinced to finish him off soon. He doesn't have to offer anything anyway.

0160 BC (Turn 156): Cski: Sword>Galley.

Perhaps worth mentioning that unlike (IIRC) some earlier versions of Civ, naval units don't benefit from the barracks. It's therefore better to build land units in Cski if possible, and build the naval units somewhere else.

0115 BC (Turn 159): Agh.. the chop goes to Moscow:mad:

Would it frustrate you terribly if anyone were to mention that that info is available before you start the chop? :mischief: If you hover the mouse over the 'chop forest' button before clicking it, it'll tell you how many hammers will go to which town if you chop that tile (I do remember in Civ3 often having to take a chance on which city the chop would go to).

That's the nice thing about these SGs. There's always something new to learn. Thanks for the tip.

I am only familiar with Civ3 and there are no advantage in Civ3 to build a galley in a Rax city. Just we are pressing for Galleys and that is the best place to build one fast. We will be able to build Swords soon.

Not at all. :goodjob: Actually I did not start the chop/cottage process. I made a poor assumption based on mere visual illusion. Since it look like the tile is closer to the St P than Cap, I assumed it will go to St. P. The truth is, IIRC, the distance is the same.

Btw I was aware of the notification. However, when you hover over the worker afterwards, it only tell you the number of turns left to complete the chop.

For 4 turns, all 7 archers and the gang stayed holed up in Athens. As for letting Mao have two more cities on his continent is concerned. I say no to razing......Nevermind. We are not able to raze. Got it.;)

hey all...long day at work, I'm too tired to take a look at the save and offer my opinions, so I'll do that in the morning.

Ok, here is my plan for my set :

Take out Alex :hammer:
Take out Alex :ninja: and
Take out Alex :ar15:

Sometimes the simple plan is the best. As an aside it looks as though we can forget Vicki as an ally. She dislikes us more than Mao. :p

IBT : Coppertownski : galley -> sword
Lodestone City : axe -> axe

Gandhi founds Christianity

1) 85BC : not much

IBT : Sparta comes out of resistance -> obelisk

2) 70BC : we meet Frederick, we are up poly and writing

IBT : Christianity spreads to Lodestone City and Novgorod

3) 55BC : nothing

IBT : the two loaded galleys (4 archers) from Alex appear at Sparta
Moscow : axe -> sword
Novgorod : obelisk -> lib

Christianity spreads to Coppertowsnki

4) 40Bc : nothing

IBT : Alex unloads the archers next to Sparta
JC wants us to join him beating up Vicky, decline
Coppertownski : sword -> christian temple

5) 25BC : sword kills Greek archer at Sparta
axe kills second Greek archer clean
axe kills third archer
axe loses to fourth archer
axe kills that archer

IBT : nothing

6) 10BC : not much

IBT : one of our nets at Moscow are destroyed

7) 5AD : just moving units

IBT : JC demands we cancel our business with England, I decline

8) 20AD : there are still 7 archers in Athens

IBT : Lodestone City : axe -> galley

9) 35AD : move scouting party back from Athens

IBT : Moscow : sword -> galley

10) 50AD : nothing

The Greek galleys just returned to Athens, so maybe he picks up the next 4 archers. These could arrive in 2 turns then.

Roster :

Thrallia - UP
Simon - on deck
Sam
Dagnabit
Htadus
Mark - just played

Perhaps it might have been better to accept. Vicki looks a lost cause anyway. Still, not much we can do about it at present. If JC is still fighting Vicki after Alex is gone perhaps it might be worth joining the war without actually participating?

That would be quite handy. More XP always helps. :)

Looks as though we'll have to start MM'ing some cities to stop growth depending on whether we're likely to whip them in the near future. It'll be nice to get that last settler up north so we can get an OB with Ghandi.

EDIT: As Mao's settled that island near Lodestone I presume he's run out of room. I still suspect he'll go to war in the not too distant future.

We appear to be caught in an unfortunate bind. Despite having much lower military than Mao (who I agree is likely to declare war on us soon), we're now spending 8gpt supporting our military; that's worth >10% on our science rate. I believe the solution is higher pop, which may give us a reason to ease off the poprushing soon (or to capture more cities; unfortunately those two aren't totally compatible :crazyeye: ).

We're going to have metal casting soon - wonder if at that point we'll be able to spare Coppertownski - as our highest-production city - to build the forge/colossus? (We'll be able to have Cski on 17 hammers/turn which makes 11 turns for forge, then 10 turns for colossus with the 125% production bonus)

Nice to see our cottages are starting to come online en masse :)

I notice btw that Mao has iron in the desert in a very nice position for us to be able (if we decide to do so) to declare war and pillage the next turn. Wonder if it's his only iron source... I also notice that we and Mao have something in common: He has silk and we need it :mischief:

(EDIT: Mao has fur and ivory too. And he won't trade them to us. )

I'm sympathetic to Sam regarding declaring on Vicki; only issue is that'll probably give us a - with Gandhi, who's on +6 to us but is friendly to Victoria.

To the East it looks like we could usefully make friends with Hatty-Frederick (Hatty is hostile to both Huayna and Mao), and to the West it looks a bit like Gandhi-Caesar as friends, but there might still be possibilities with trying to befriend Gandhi-Vicki instead. I'd really like to see what their land is like before committing ourselves though. The Caesar-Vicki war is currently spoiling what could otherwise have been a very strong Christian alliance :( (But on the upside it'll probably keep Caesar off our backs for a good while yet :) )

I'd really like to know what Mao's territory is like but he won't give us OB (and if we could get it with him, that'd probably annoy Hatty)

As far as I can tell:
Caesar, Vicky and Mao have iron
Hatty, Caesar, Gandhi and Huayna have copper

No way to tell who has horses, except Gandhi has surplus of them.
Also no way to tell who has ivory, except Mao has a surplus of it.

This is potentially worrying as Mao has construction too: So he currently has the capability to build axes, swords, spears, elephants and cats - don't know if he can also build chariots. The only early unit he definitely can't build is horse archers, as he doesn't have the tech for it. I would say that if he did declare war, we'd really struggle to hold on to Sparta.

Both Hatty and Frederick have enough on their hands right now, so I guess they are either preparing to go to war or are already at war with someone we've not met.

Our tech rate continues to go down. I am not sure we should even add the last setter to the top of our island until we know weather we can support it. I haveurged from a long time ago that we get a navy before we start advancing into Alex's realm. Again, I am not sure we have the resources to grow our empire at this point andcontinue a war outside our island ring. Taking out Alex (2 cities) at the cost of Mao (Alex good bud), Point leader, (not our friend),( at our door step),( with construction)- which by the way we are 50 turns away from. and Has +- 7 Archers in a well defended city cite. What am I missing in I don't think we wan't to go there????

the main reason I believe we wanted to finish off Alex is because once he's gone, Mao won't have any reason to be upset with us anymore.
