SGOTM 05 - Mac Team

i'm really sweating an answer to if i got to have warlords or not
last i checked there wasn't even gonna be a mac team
i really really hope it will work out if not at least i can talk with everyone i have a very differn't style of play from best i can tell for reading peoples games an d it has worked so far
any way like dr s said archery is in the bag as well as mysticism but i will update later.

Umm. I've sent you a response to your PM, and I really don't understand why you think this might be a Warlords game. Let me quote from my first post in this thread:

AlanH said:
However, Mac players are in a separate team, as there is not a Mac version 1.74, and the HoF Mod cannot be made to work cross-platform. If I am able to produce a mod to support this variant, they will play the game in Civ4 version 1.61 with a modified Mac HoF Mod.

Last I heard, version 1.61 was NOT a Warlords version number. They all start with '2'.

Played another (very short) practice game this morning. Lost on turn 11 when an AI archer showed up next to the capital and beat the warrior that had just completed. So it seems that the AI can attack very early if it wanders by. We'll have to build warrior first, I think.

@a_man, were you playing with raging barbs? When you say that the barbs get knocked out "pretty early" what do you mean?

I don't see why we can't get both Stonehenge and the Oracle, although that might put too much pressure on our military. If we do Oracle, what tech would we take? I would consider HBR, which I would never do in a straight game, but I suspect that would give the barbs immediate horse archers. Remember, the barbs can spawn units even if the necessary resources aren't hooked up.

Oh, and I created a second practice map:

I haven't been able to play around with the test map yet, hopefully I'll get to this evening.

I don't know about taking HBR from the Oracle - I mean, why not just research it ourselves? It's only 250 :science:, so it won't take forever. In fact, it would be best to get HBR out as quickly as we can, when you think about it.

So maybe beeling BW to give our teammates axemen and enable our chops, then beeline HBR, maybe picking up wheel just after AG?

EDIT: I just want to make sure that no one is reading any of the other team's threads, as that's forbidden! :salute:

ok ok ive made bigger mistakes on eaisier things i can't even find where i was led to belive i needed warlords... who knows?
anywho
a practice game from the first map
started with agg to grow city and get AH, warrior, worker
finished agg by 3520 started AH free archery at 2950 Ah at 2920 warrior at 2920 aswell already had worker forgot to write down when i finished it
then i made a mistake i went barracks but i kept playng a while as i didn't yet know i messed it up
finished wheel 2620 the same time i had finished 2 farms and a pasture then i went for BW going thru mining first finished barracks in 2440 (could have prob made 2 archers instead but o well)thta swhen i made a archer and finished mining
then the barbs gave me hunting and fishing preetty back to back and i finished bronze at 1840 and started pottery which done by 1420 moved on to masonry and got mysticism from barbs
about that time spanish indian and japan had archers with com 1or2 pillageing my land and thogh i got a settler out to the copper to the south they kept pillaging the road to connect this is where i decided it would have been better to put the barracks on hold and have used the time to make archers

feel free to pick it apart tell me what eles would have been a better way to go

o and yes on the origanal sign up or diss. thred the practice game had reg. barbs the one i just played it was a much fairer fight, althogh the only city they had was on an island .

HBR after BW would make sence but waiting to get at least ag. will keep our pop. really low in the earlly turns, i mean it takes long enuff with a size 2 to build archers so geting farms out quick ,in the early game, is like a production boost isn't it

Well, when you look at the starting location, our only food resource is Pigs. So we'll have to get Animal Husbandry for that. If we get Hunting and fishing for free, we won't have to spend time researching Agriculture ourselves for quite a long time.

If we keep getting Archery, Mysticism, Hunting and Fishing at about the schedule posted from a_man's game, we should be in good shape.

Our early builds would be all military except for a single worker to build a sty for the pigs and chop the forests. We should be able to do 4:hammers: per turn at size 2, and 6 at size 3. That gives us 7 and 4 turn archers, respectively.

I'm going to try to play some more practice games tomorrow.

Do people have thoughts on where to settle and/or move the scout?

For the scout, it seems to me like W-W or W-SW make the most sense.

For settling, we could settle in place, or ... ? It looks to me like there's a river delta to the W-NW of us, which would indicate more ocean pretty close by. Is it worth exploring to see if there is seafood up there? What about settling SW of the current start. That would keep the pigs, dye and all the visible forests and remove the coast tiles from the BFC. It does add a mountain tile, though. And it risks missing out on seafood 2N or N-NW.

Alternatively, we could move the settler onto the pig hill just to look around, then move back and settle the next turn if we don't see anything interesting.

How do people feel about coastal vs. inland capitals?

Well, I've now PMed the other who had signed up. I also have PMed the guys who had expressed interest a few months ago, when the game went Warlords instead of Vanilla.

Now we wait . . .

thats why i was thinking it was warlords

in the game im playing now i startedc with mining 3580 then to BW 2740.
Started with warrior then another which i stopped part way when it uped to size 2 to go worker, and build some mines. Archery at the same time as last but im half way thru HBR and i still haven't got hunting free i ended up grabing ag when it was only a 2 turn investment.Isabella and cyrus asked for peace and i gave it to them but redeclaired when they started to get a lead. The second free tech this time was mystism 1960, then fishing 1870. Built the barracks after i sent a settler to the copper to the west. im still playing it i ithink the bline to BW is good but HBR is gonna take almost 70 turns with 3 citys one of which i took from salidin but i also can't think of a better way to go ,as far as helping the barbs keep everyone eles down.

i didn't finish geting Hbr in this one i knew that 70 sumodd turns was way too many

"For the scout, it seems to me like W-W or W-SW make the most sense."

yes but if you double NW NW you could see right away if there is any seafood in the north coast.

you know the war weariness looks like it will keep our pop between 3 and 4 in most citys at least until a) religion b)construction(collesium) c)calender (there is dye south of the (probally) city site

i'm sorry that im so bad at spelling i hope you all can make english out of my jibberish

i just read thru the old game that peter grimes posted up there somewhere
the only thing is they never finished they had the win in their sights but didn't complete it. Just hope it is not a view of things to come?

Your Start File
I've uploaded your start file, and it is available on the Progress Page here.

HOF-Mac-1.61.SGOTM5
You must install a special version of the Mac HOF Mod:

Download it HERE

Installing the Mod
The mod is a simple ZIP file. Expand it (or let Safari expand it) to produce a folder, and put this folder in the /Civilization IV/Mods/ folder. This Mods folder is in the same directory as your Civilization IV application.

Loading the Mod
You have two options to load the mod:

1. Launch Civ4, click Advanced, click Load A Mod, select 'HOF-Mac-1.61.SGOTM5'. Civ4 will tell you it has to restart to load the mod. Let it do so and then start a game in the usual way.

2. Set it as your default mod by editing your ~/Documents/Civilization IV/CivilizationIV.ini file in TextEdit.
Find the comment line:
; Specify a Mod folder (Mods\Mesopotamia), '0' for none

Change the line below it from:
Mod=0

to:
Mod=HOF-Mac-1.61.SGOTM5

Save the edited file. Civ4 will then load the mod at startup, avoiding the need for the double start. However, this will mean it is loaded for all your non-SGOTM games, which may not be what you want.

Important: SGOTM 5 HoF Mod Features
The special mod provides the same features as the standard HoF Mod for Mac.

In addition, it provides you with on-screen information for you and your team-mates, the barbs. It also allows you to win! Neither would be possible in a standard game where you were teamed with them.

No Diplomatic Victory
The bad news is that I was not able to make it possible for you to win a Diplomatic victory, as the game software calculates the UN votes internally, and it doesn't allow the barb team to take part in the voting, either as a candidate or as a voter. Gyathaar has modded the Windows custom DLL to fix this, but I could not find a way to modify it for you using only Python. I have therefore had to disable the Diplomatic victory condition in your start file.

But you didn't want to go there, anyway, did you? :p

Please contact me via PM if you have any technical problems during the game. Good luck with the game ... and with my software!

Thank you alanH
i'm sure there are more flattering words to say but Thank you again

So i guess mac team does this mean we are ready to star t if so somebody needs to start and make an order i suppose one of us could do a draw see who goes when i know im gonna have a hard time waiting to long to start but hey paitence is a virtue. Ive never played sgotm and might could use an explaination on how to upload the file or what not so i'm gonna keep playing practice rounds till we get going.

and (i know im hopeless) i can't get the start save is that right or is the sign in screen the link goes to something eles

Thanks Alan :goodjob:

I think we should spend a little more time running some practice games before we start, just so that we're clear on how to manage the first 50 turns or so.

...and I still haven't found time to practice myself :arg:

Apologies. The progress page link in my post was broken. I've fixed it.

Thank you again

Wel i guess a few more for practice wont hurt...

can i use the new mod to play a practice game i can win?

ok game three
started with mining/BW and a warrior then a workergot archery at 2980 a little later reaserched res. BW at 2680. res Hunting 2530. AH 2200made a peaace with alexander changed to slavery in 2110. it was taking to long to reaserch HBR so i worked all the tiles up and down the river that shaved a little time off. got fishing 1540 Barbs destoy and capture 2 difernt citys one is chinas capitol (they got it back in 3-4 turns) got mystism in 1450. got agg. in1300 got wheel in 1240 got masonry at 865 and res HBR after 40 or so turns in 775 after i had pottery? then writeing? at 565 and 370 respectivly

can i use the new mod to play a practice game i can win?

By all means! A bit of testing would do the mod no harm whatever.
