SGOTM 05 Maintenance Thread

Obviously we're quite far from the purpose of this thread.
I think we have an almost general agreement on :
- sticking to the deadline
- starting to think about the next SGotM, with a few modifications in the submissions list presentation (mostly showing "final" instead of a previous date after the last save).

Is there a discussion thread somewhere to talk about those issues?
And I didn't spoil anything here, but clearly one team is done and is getting bored enough to post massively off topic here ;).

Maybe we need to resurrect the "Trash talk" thread from SGOTM 1, or just a general discussion thread for not so important game discussion issues.

Also, I'm for sticking with the originally stated date, but then again, I'm also in favor of multiple SGOTMs running in overlap.

i vote "no" to changing the graphs. They're fine the way they are. I doubt anyone ever changes their gameplay based on what they see there.

I have several times in the Civ3 SGOTMs been in the situation that we have a rough idea of another team's end date, and that we throw caution out the window in order to beat that date or die trying. This with the current situation, with end saves not showing.

Well. not the graphs, just a "final" instead of a date in the date column, seems a nice change.
Note that you don't know if it's a victory or a loss, you can try to deduce it by the graphs, and sometime it's not easy (i'm thinkin' to SG4).

Of course, if you can see by the list that some member of a team posted in another team thread, you already have the same new.

The Trash Talk thread in SGOTM 1 achieved nothing, as far as I could tell. It was simply another thread I had to worry about from a spoiler or general discipline viewpoint, and it produced virtually nothing of any literary, humorous or intellectual merit. The recent spam in this thread has not achieved any higher standard, so I don't propose to repeat the experiment.

Let me suggest that one of the team threads of a team that has finished and isn't shy about it (that would be MW  ) be the "unofficial" trash talk thread. That way, since only finished teams can access it, no issue re spoiler info, and maybe that becomes an incentive to finish faster?

And it would keep it out of the maint thread ... :mischief:

As much as AlanH disparages the trash talk, there is clearly popular demand for it! :p (Page out of your book ... ;) )

I've provided end-of-game spoiler threads in the past for discussion of the games, and they've been poorly used. It isn't clear to me why a completed team thread would be a better place for such a discussion. If you want and will use one, I'll open an end-of-game spoiler thread for this game. But remember, spam is spam, and is frowned on in these forums, whichever thread it's in.

[UPDATE] Spoiler thread is now open for business.

Sounds like a discussion for a different thread, but your "spam is spam" remark requires some definition, I think. According to Wikipedia:
Spamming is the abuse of electronic messaging systems to indiscriminately send unsolicited bulk messages
Clearly, the trash-talking some of us have been doing is not spam, technically. Probably better described as off-topic or thread-hijacking.

If trash-talking is frowned upon at CFC CFR, that needs to be known, because some of us do it for fun, good spirits, and I find it's one way that I have increased the dialogue between myself and a few others here. In other words, it's one way to increase the flow of communication. It's pretty clear and easy to detect when certain people dislike it, so I "spare" them, as I did you, when I deleted my off-topic posts here. (At least) most of us at MW like to have fun, joke around, and get serious on occasion. If our trash-talking on our own thread is frowned upon by the powers that be, then we've got some issues.

EDIT: I must add that I've always been aware that this maintenance thread is off-limits for trash-talking and I have respected that, except when I simply forgot where I was posting and responded to some others. It's clear to me that we all need to respect the work of you admins and try to minimize any unnecessary traffic and garbage on your lines.

The forum rules are pretty clear.

In this context, spam is used to describe meaningless trivia, often posted just for the sake of increasing post counts or to seek attention.

The audience is considerably wider in a spoiler thread than in your closed team community, and you may be less aware of all of the players' cultural or other sensitivities. Please behave around here as you should anywhere else in these forums.

This is CFC, not CFR, by the way :p

Took me 10 minutes to find the Forum Rules, fyi. You're right the spam rules are fairly clear and are clearly violated by trash-talking:
Spam is not tolerated.
Spam is considered posting topics or messages on our forums that contain no point, relevance, or contain subject matter that doesn't directly allow other member participation. Topics directed to a particular user, posting several times consecutively as an appendage to ONE post, and posts in threads that have NOTHING to do with the subject matter are all considered spam and will be deleted on sight. Contributing to/or intentionally posting spam will not be tolerated.
I stand corrected, AlanH. Thanks. Feel free to delete my violations post haste.

The link is at the bottom of every page. And you agreed to comply with them when you signed up to participate here. I commend them to every player's attention.

And so we have a jokes forum? http://forums.civfanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?f=21

Containing the likes of this? http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=246688

Seems to me that trash talking has at least as much redeeming social value as the above ... it's entertainment. :mischief:

But, where is the appropriate place to discuss the question of whether trash talk violates the forum rules (or at least if it does to a greater extent than other content on the site) ... since this is not the place?

Different forums and threads have different purposes. This sub-forum is not a Jokes forum. Of course humour is essential to all discussion, but it's not the sole, or even primary, purpose here as it is there.

Using a poster with more infractions than I've had hot dinners as an example to make your case is not productive.

There's a Site Feedback forum for discussion of the site-wide rules and procedures.

If you have a specific issue with the way I moderate within and interpret the site rules then you can take it up with Thunderfall.

Just a critic:
I appreciate the end-game spoiler, and i entered it, when i noticed it was forbidden to teams still playing.

I quickly closed the browser, but perhaps some kind of warning...
or have i missed it?

Anyway, you (Alan) must win some kind of prize for your patience.

There's a clue in the thread title. It's called "End of Game Spoiler", and there's a red alert in the second paragraph of the first post. Now, what else would you like me to do, exactly?

I think you cannot have done more than this, infact as i saw the "red alert" i closed the browser, to be sure not to stay there more than a second.

I don't know, something in the title, or a message in all the teams threads.
Anyway, not a problem, if you can actually monitor the activity in the threads, you can see who's fair and who's not. I presume...

Well, end-game spoiler threads were never meant to be entered until end-game, so just develop the attitude ;)
