SGOTM 05 - Misfits

So who is up? And is anyone on the skip list, or somone who missed a turn (Softnum) want in?

As we haven't heard anything at all from the skip roster for some time, I'd say ignore them until (or if) they ever request a turnset again.

Mastiff_of_Ar (Up)

Okay... I'll get it and play tonight. Any other thoughts or ideas?

We should manage Astronomy during the next turnset. Start Galleons. Or, if we have managed to kill/pillage enough, upgrade a galley or two.

I think I would concentrate on building troops and killing Qin. Keep any cities with useful resources (silk, fur) or good population (8+) and either commerce or mines. Raze the rest.

Hope we aren't sneak-attacked. We might build a couple of fast defenders for our homeland cities.

Since asoka has blocked off our southern island, i believe we have 3 archers, 2 muskets and 1 knight down there, its better defended that the north i think?

It might be useful to check what current deals we have, and if anything we are giving away will be payed for by someone else, or atleast take note if you see anyone with per turn money besides asoka.

they both cancelled yes :( we are going to need a buddhist city and missionaries and go for a permanent change if we wanna keep them i expect.

I got hung up last night, guys, so I didn't get to play the set. But it seems we have lots of time. More discussion is good! I can pick it up tonight, though. Once I do, I may want to ask for more advice...

Mf

all good with that mastiff. yer just rampage on the chinese, bribe for peace perhaps after taking one more city (his new capital). I think that will weaken him enough so he wont be as much of a pain after 10 turns of peace.

Aye, and watch your back. It might be worth checking who alex has open borders with, he isnt building military atm obviously, however he may not be able to reach us with military atm. Worth checking.

Ummm the 3 cities building markets are of good population. If they reach unhappiness just whip em happy and get the markets (seems to work that way with pop 10+ sized cities). Then they can pump out more units. if you want to consider this however, i recommend micromanaging those 3 cities and putting the specialists to work on some food. I previously reduced their food to specialists because of unhappyness (and hence the markets). CNWJR may think differently about this however?

I'm about halfway through the turnset. I did a little whipping so I could get started on some defense on the mainland. (Working on muskets) His new capital fell quickly under a cat and the knights, good job getting them there! The other two cats are working towards Xian, and it should be razed in short order. Qin is now also offering Banking, but I think I want to raze two more of his cities first. I also need to check the bleed in regards to that tech. No need to sue for it if we're about to get it...

quite so, wd on taking second cap. oh pillage after razing (if havent already) to support the war effort :) whilst waiting for backup units.

Okay... it's up. I'll give more detailed stuff tomorrow.

A couple of comments. Not necessarily bad, but I notice that we have several galleons under construction. Where are the troops to put aboard them?

Unless we plan on upgrading the galleys, we should probably disband them to save on upkeep costs. This can wait until the galleons are ready, of course. And keeping one or two to shuttle units from island to island is okay.

Asoka is going to be a huge pain... he already has Astronomy. He is kicking Izzy's butt. :spank: He is the biggest problem facing us.

We are still in fourth place in power, though we are about even with Alex for score (3rd/4th).

To finish up a bit, I razed two more cities of Qins, but he still refused to give up Education. I decided to let the next player decide to keep the war going and make more money, or sue for peace. The barbs will have Banking in 4 turns.

I basically put a effort into defense on the home island, and also building a few libraries to help with research. I think we need some courthouses, too, especially on Qinland. Once we got Astro, I started a couple galleys. My thought process would be to slaughter someone we can reach, but can't get to us... Alex?

The question about Asoka is whether we need to kill him, or if we can dominate with him still around. Ideas?

Well, Alex can get to us now, but if we take his city giving him the culture bridge, that will change until he gets Astronomy.

I don't think we can get a domination win with Asoka around. At least, not around at full strength. He outreaches us quite a bit, so we need the ability to put together a SoD or two to start reducing him to a sensible level. Perhaps his capital first if/when we go after him.

It may be well worth hitting asoka whilst his troups are south with izzy. it would be near impossible to take his capital and hold it for long with the amount of culture he produces? perhaps raze the city to the capitals east then capture the capital, then hope the barb culture will be enough to save the capital from being encircled by his culture.

OK, i have the save, lets see what I can do....

EDIT:I have played 5 turns and uploaded the save. I am a cautious player so i don't like rushing ahead.

We have banking. Qin is now offering education, but we are about 1000 beakers of bleeding it ourselves. Razed a Chinese city and the Indians took Barcelona

Marowaker, are you going to play another 5-10 turns?

A couple of comments. (again)

Peace with Qin (only 10 turns remember) is worth it at the moment. Our forces are too depleted to really take it to him. Also, we are at 3WW on most of our cities. :(

We are getting silks in trade. Why? We have silks at Shanghai. Cancel the deal and try to get gems instead. Speaking of happiness, the next city in line in Qinland has furs. Keep it for that reason alone instead of razing.

If we want to hurt Asoka, help Izzy. I would gift her horses. If we have any extra happiness items, gift those as well.

Use the cultural slider. It cancels out unhappiness and lets us put those unhappy workers in the fields (or mines, etc.). Not necessary if we get peace.

It is pretty much time to stop whipping. :( I know everyone likes it (witness the cumulative unhappiness from it), but we need the population to work the land.

There are unpillaged areas left in Qinland. For example, cows just south of Chengdu and towns north of Nanjing. The latter are not so much of a worry except that they represent income that we are not getting. The cows, however, are letting Qin use their resources against us still. It will be forever before we expand that far and it seems unlikely we will resettle. Pillaging removes them from future settlement by other civs.

Again, we need units. Combat units. We simply MUST have them if we are to conduct combat. Otherwise, why are we wasting our time with this game? :) Frankly, we simply cannot battle the likes of Asoka without lots of units.

If/when we go after Asoka, I'd like to have enough units to take out his capital and hold it while going after the next cities on the list. This will take a lot of units. 30+ probably. We need cats (cannons, eventually) to take down culture and a mixture of attack units to take out his defenses. If we had more units now, we could try a sneak attack at his capital while most of his units were busy with Izzy... alas.

We should build missionaries for the captured cities. This helps both with happiness (so we don't have to whip away the entire population). We need courthouses where they are not. We need a few more theaters so we can put a city with the Globe. Which? Capital or Old Sarai?

Do we switch civics when we get peace? Representation, Mercantilism, Organized Religion all are good for a rebuilding phase if we are making buildings instead of units. I still suggest units, but if we are going to make buildings anyway, get the right civics for it. Mercantilism is probably worth it simply for the free GP. Especially as we have no open borders for regular trade anyway.

We will be getting another GP in about 6 turns in Old Sarai. Most likely a GS, but we have a polluted pool, so anything is possible. If scientist, put academy in Old Sarai. Otherwise, see what works.
