SGOTM 05 - Misfits

If Sal is willing to give up techs for peace AFTER we take Mecca, I suppose he can live for a few turns while we bring more troops to finally squash him. :mischief: No point leaving a viper around. Now, OTOH, if we ever get to feudalism before the end, perhaps we can make him into a vassal.

I like the way you think, cnwjr... But sadly, no vassals in vanilla. Next SWGOTM we'll make a point of it, though! Where'd Softnum go? You'd think people had lives outside of Civ! :rotfl:

finish CoL, then Currency. can refound copper city yes, sal wont live with mecca in hand. But after we take mecca it could be worth peace for tech. He will be no nuisance in future, other cities are ewww... unless he tries to build on our island in future.

ok thats 24 hours for softy? keep it rolling? or give him another 12 hours to acknowledge?

edit: if i wasnt next up i'd be encouraging the next if they were ready? :)

As it has been over 36 hours since the file became available, I'd say move softnum down in the lineup. Our rules are to post a gotit within 24 hours then 48 more to play. Piko, take it away.

Mecca is ours!! damascus ready to fall! economy is on edge, i am building courthouses in most locations besides capital, have no choice. Also i did plunder some cottages at damascus, to keep economy going.

I took about 12 turns. once again i just wanted to get everything right for the next person so they know exactly what is going on when they look. and we discussing 10 or 15, so it seemed logical to do.

Currency is on its way slowly, am building cottages, all seems good right now, saladin is a wounded camel. I agree, we should destroy him, i don't think we can afford to keep damascus right now?

oh lost 1 catapult and 1 swordsman. 2 catapults at damascus with keshik, sword and axe. another sword and catapult close behind. its only a spearman and an archer. 4 units with 2 catapults would take in 2 turns i believe. before he gets a chance to build something else. With one more round of bombards, mince meat :)

Sal wouldn't give techs for peace? Kill him!

I'd go ahead and raze the remaining cities, unless there is one with a nice cottage/gold/silver/etc. We can either build later, or let the barbs come in and do so. As long as we control the territory before the other civs come a-calling.

Suggestion. Put a priest on duty in the capital to help get the next prophet. This will let us build the special building for money in our Christianity holy city. Also, get a couple of missionaries down to Saladland to get our new cities their religion. Speeds up building construction (for now) and allows the temple for happiness.

In building up for Qin, remember we will need some spearmen/pikemen to take out all his many chariots or to keep them from retaking his capital.

If Sal gives nothing, he dies.

I'll check the cities, I'm in it for the money. If theyre lousy, they're rubble. We're a long way from the capital.

Good Sug: We're make religious headway!

I've just had a look at the last save. There is already a priest in the capital. Around 30-40 turns before next prophet.

It appears that Sal will make peace. We would gain his techs and let him live another 10 turns. Unless we want to raze Damascus, then trade for techs. :mischief:

We can buy peace with the remaining civs (except Qin) if we choose to do so. Probably at a cost of CoL.

Qin has expanded towards the mainland and has contact with Cyrus so far.

Next couple of turnsets looks like recovery building for the most part. New troops should be heading towards Qinland in preparation. If we let Sal live a bit, keep a couple of galleys to keep him in check.

I notice that we acquired Sal's academy in Mecca. :D Great. Lets get a library there, too.

Do we want to consider Great Library? I suspect we are unlikely to get it at this late date, but the computer civs don't always head that way.

Long term combat. With us being behind the tech curve, what do we most need to fight battles and win? Or will we pass the others civ's tech curve as we recover with courthouses and other items?

Salad gave us everything... all his techs and all his cash.

He can die soon. More later! Not too much to tell, though...

I've taken a look at the new situation.

Asoka has built near enough to us to bridge the gap with his culture. We can now move that direction if we so choose. More importantly, we now have a trading link to him. We have the choice of trading our stone (or something else in a few more turns of building) for gems! We also have both wine and dyes coming online in the next turnset. That can give us a +3 in the happiness column. A big burst in population and production is possible. Get another dye connected for trade.

We should concentrate on building troops as a result. We will need a largish army (10+) to take out Qin's capital. More to hold it against counterattacks. Let's get going on this.

Sal: We can attack again in a few more turns. He now has drama and music, so do not research those. We should be able to get them from him. Either through threats or by razing a city or three.

We really need to decide on a long term research strategy . One tech at a time is not going to do it very well. I recommend: metal casting (forges), feudalism (vassalage), machinery (crossbow), guilds (knight) for the next several. I'm open to other ideas, but have a definite goal and long-term reason.

Also, as we now have monarchy, are we ready to convert to Hereditary Rule (and theocracy?).

We should probably only build more cities by capturing them for now, though one more on the end of our continent to keep Asoka from settling there would perhaps be prudent.

Micro-Manage!!!!!! I see that the stone city is NOT working the gold!!! This should NEVER happen!!!

Turn 234, 1010 AD: Qin Shi Huang has completed Angkor Wat! <=== if any of you missed that. I hope its in Beijing? As for tech? Spot on cnwjr, certainly need feudalism before those barb cities get hit. Do we want to trade for peace? i got asked twice in my turn to pay theology for peace and i refused. We will be strong enough soon when we build up to take Qin that they shouldnt need a bribe :)

Whoa we really caught up in techs then hey? our score must be rising? *loads progress page*

Great library sounds handy if we have anywhere that can build it? perhaps its time to chop some forests for it? replace with some more cottages.

Hey guys i am back. Place me second in the current lineup (between failedreality and cnwjr)

Good thing in taking out Saladin's capital. That will teach him to raze our cities:ar15:

I noticed when examining the save that Asoka is ahead of us. I presume it is not the worst(he is our friend) but should he be that advanced? He has longbows.

So we are going after Qin. Does that mean that Saladin won't be dealt with, or are we waiting for the peace treaty to expire before we completly finish him off?

peace treaty expire, take damascus, raise it, take him down to one city and milk him dry again with peace treaty. Then finish him 10 later again.

As for Asoka? hrmmm i dunno, domination or conquest? if we go domination we could keep him at peace near whole game? but we havent had much luck trading with him yet, but soon?

I'm here too. Sorry, I thought I would have PC access this weekend, and it turns out I didn't. I can be placed back whereever you want.

We won't have much success with trading due to our poor relations. We will usually be in bad deals if we can get any at all. Asoka will trade now. We can get gems, but it will cost stone. Perhaps, in the next cycle (10 turns later) we will have extra dyes to trade to him. I haven't looked to see if anyone else has access to dyes. Once we get established near Qin's capital, there are silks. A few keshiks there can pillage extensively (leave one silk).

GL needs a library, so we should have a couple of places to build it. Gold city looks good. Lots of food, lots of hammers. Makes a decent research city. If we don't go for GL, we need HE. Perhaps as well, but we aren't strong enough at present to be building two long works as well as an army.
