SGOTM 05 - Trash Team

i think we can decide on metal casting when we have the other techs.

Next is Calendar, then construction and drama. Then we can decide what we need more MC or cash. Or both :devil:

Stuge, will you be able to play tonight? Then Cam can play in is regular weekend shift.

Observation: Playing late in the evening after writing a long and exhausting essay isn't the optimal move.

When I was one click of enter away from assaulting Saladin's last city, he came begging for peace.

Civ4ScreenShot0000-2.jpg

I turned him down and attacked. A Keshik withdrew from its attack, leaving the single archer wounded, then:

Civ4ScreenShot0001-2.jpg

Saladin was no more. Then I realised what an idiot I was. He wouldn't have gone anywhere in ten turns, he might not even have got another archer out. This was like building the Oracle and not taking the free tech. :wallbash:
And this will bite me later, you'll see.

After this the round went quietly. Building troops, some infrastructure and a city.

Civ4ScreenShot0002-1.jpg

Now here comes weedy moment #2, brought to you by Brain Fart Inc.

I set Old Sarai to build a monument. Then, while it was still being built, I let calendar finish.

:wallbash:

Now, I honestly don't know what would be the quickest way to get the 15 culture points there. I set the city to build a library, but it'll take ages before we can whip it. IF I had taken alphabet from Saladin, we could've researched drama and then whipped a theatre. Now I just don't know. Whatever we do, the invasion will be set back by a turnset.

Some merrier notes:

- We're researching construction.

- Karakorum will finish a workboat in three turns. It will also grow in three turns. Then it should build a settler for the northern bridge.

- Our happiness situation is getting better, with the wine online and dyes soon coming.

- I just whipped both Turfan and Ning-Hsia for two pop.

- Mecca is shaping up as a nice production center.

Here's the save. Where's the :kickmyself: smiley?

Don't worry about the monument - I'd have almost certainly done exactly the same. It happens to me with monasteries in offline games all the time.

Let's look at things positively: any delay while we wait for culture will give us time to build more ships and units before attacking. We'll be able to hit the continent harder and do more damage before the initial wave runs out of steam.

stuge: I did the monument/calendar thing in SGOTM3. Its a nuisance but its certainly not a big deal. I still can't get the game going to look at the save (or I'd be playing) but I'd guess its likely to take several turns to assemble an invasion force anyway so the delay is probably less than you think.

Never mind... I'd doubt I would have thought about delaying calendar. Who knows we might get lucky and land a religion... Glad to see Saladin is gone. Alphabet is pretty useless at this stage.

Hi! :)

This is a 'got it' but I won't play tonight but probably tomorrow morning, so anyone feeling really keen can chip in extra advice ... or you can just tell me to hold off my round if you want a full day or more to digest.

Checked out the save and I have a few remarks:

-Mecca, Turfan and Beshalik should focus on growing now that they can.
-Mecca should build several archers for happiness so that the keshik and CR2 axeman can go a conquering.
-Old Sarai needs a few mines and with the two farms it should be done with the library in no time. Especially when :whipped:

Other than that I think we are in good shape to strike in 30 turns orso.

I seem to have really uninteresting turnsets! :crazyeye:

Our commercial predicament is dire, so a fair slab of the turnset was spent trying to grow Cottages - :science: is sitting on 20%. The culture bridge towards the mainland is a long way away still, although we've now got the two Mines and the Grassland Farm up around Old Sarai. The other point of note is that there is the possibility to build the bridge to China now if this was considered desirable sooner rather than later.

Opening at 590AD;

Followed Remco's suggestions and directed key cities to grow in population. Split up the Workers - there was a group of three with one that had unused turns :dubious:.

605AD to 695AD;

I opted to build Plantations where in city boundaries - that meant rolling over the Cottages placed on the two Dyes. Certainly one we need for happiness alone, and frankly we would benefit from 5:commerce: now more so than spending copious turns trying to grow Cottages on these tiles. I continue with Stuge's plan to build the culture bridge to the north east, and get out the Work Boat and move on to the Settler after Karakorum's population growth. Mecca produces a Galley and a couple of Archers - the Workers, Axe, and Keshik are ferried back to the mainland after its tiles have been optimised. Miscellaneous unit builds elsewhere - Ning Hsia goes into 'war weariness' unhappiness on the same turn that it grows, so a Keshik is whipped there. A few Archers are included in the builds - they're fairly cheap and good for Hereditary Rule.

710AD to 830AD;

Delhi gets attacked by Spain and Japan, but comfortably survives, and the Barbarians now have a 16XP (City Garrison III) Archer fortified in a Holy City on a hill. Unfortunately Goth falls to China in 725AD that simultaneously puts Persia on top of the charts for just a few turns. The Settler is whipped out of Karakorum and is shipped off with an Archer towards the bridging spot towards China. In 830AD we're advised that Tokugawa has built The Great Lighthouse.

Where we're at;

As noted, Old Sarai now has four developed tiles, and hopefully will soon get the Library to a whippable finish. Mecca is a great hybrid city, but I've opted to go with growing the Cottages there rather than using it as a unit pump. I decided not to found the culture bridge city to the north east on my turnset because of the very difficult commercial predicament that we're in at the moment and that I don't believe that China's a priority target for us now. The group may decide otherwise, but all that's happened is one wasted turn. There could be some case to bring the unit back into our borders. We're #1 in Power and Soldiers by not much. Populations are large enough to whip - but I've generally held off this turnset instead working improved tiles.

Boring turn log;
Spoiler :
Turn 207, 605 AD: You have trained a Work Boat in Karakorum. Work has now begun on a Settler.
Turn 209, 635 AD: Alexander converts to Hinduism!
Turn 214, 710 AD: Goth has been captured by the Chinese Empire!!!
Turn 218, 770 AD: You have trained a Settler in Karakorum. Work has now begun on a Archer.
Turn 219, 785 AD: Alexander adopts Organized Religion!
Turn 221, 815 AD: Ning-hsia has grown to size 4
Turn 221, 815 AD: Tokugawa has completed The Great Lighthouse!
Turn 221, 815 AD: Merit Ptah has been born in Persepolis!

Pictures!

Our main turf;

China and the prospective bridge (n.b. there's a roaming Barbarian Axeman outside Macau);

The remaining Barbarian cities - Delhi's well protected but undeveloped, Chehalis is better developed and is building Axes;

Alright, we are getting there slowly, but surely.

SoD is looking good. Will be expensive to get it sailing... Good thing we are razing and not capturing cities.

Some suggestions:
-Old Sarai should work the farm for 3 more turns to grow to size 4. In those for turns the library will have more than 45 hammers allowing a 2pop/90 hammer whip. Then it takes 8 turns to pop borders. In 11 turns we'll be sailing.
-That means in 11 turns we need to have cash to support an additional 15+ units in unit supply. Something like 7-8 gpt. We do not have this at the moment. I think all cities should focus on cottage growth at the expense of production tiles (especially karakorum and turfan which needs more cottages). We have enough units for now, but need more cash.
-Le't's not build chinese culture bridge. I suggest we even bring the three units inside borders to reduce cost.

Haven't followed the game closely enough to know but have you picked up currency to let you build gold?

We need scientists more than anything. With this tech rate currency will take probably over 50 turns.

Oh, BTW Seville is a keeper when we attack Spain. It houses the temple of Solomon.

Save

There's good news and bad news:

The bad news is that nobody would sign peace, resulting in Cyrus capturing Delhi. As a small measure of revenge, the barbs razed an ice city of Qin's. Tokugawa's also discovered feudalism so we'll definitely be coming across longbows before too long.

Now on to the good:

We've just discovered construction and are now learning currency. Hopefully it shouldn't take nearly as long as the 27 turns it's saying at the moment (we've only been at it a couple and the rate's tumbling). Mecca's built a library and the miners have now become scientists to help with our research. We seem to be learning CoL at a good rate without researching it ourselves (it's only 4 turns of self-research away now), which will also help a bunch.

A few build/MM issues:
I brought the Qin bridge settler party back into our borders to save on maintenance and they're next to Karakorum. Ning-hsia will grow into unhappiness in 3 turns. There's a catapult in the queue behind the Keshik ready to be whipped for 2-pop if necessary. Beshbalik has started a settler for a bridge to Alex, but only a couple of turns are invested so far, so feel free to veto.

Now on to the military situation:
The Spanish Armada has also set sail. I think it should head straight for Barcelona as that's the holy city of the world's dominant religion (Hinduism - 41%) and houses the Kashi Vishwanath. From there we can either head west to Madrid (which looks like it's sat on Izzy's only source of metal) or east to Seville and the Temple of Solomon.

By my square counting, we can land troops next to Barcelona in 10 turns and hopefully capture it in 11. Should be an eventful turnset for lordofcivs.

Hi every one!

First of all thanks to remconius for inviting me and allowing me to join this team. Well, I was looking for a team to accept me, as I have never played a SGOTM before, and this SGOTM was already started.

Let me tell you about a bit about my "Civ History". Out of all games of this genre, I first played "Civilization II" by Sid Meirs. But this experience was just for a short time. May be I just played a couple or 3 games in total, as I started to play "Civilization: Call to Power" by Activision. Contrary to most others, I really enjoyed playing Call to power, and spent a good time on that. But I was always waiting for "Civilization III". And when they launched it, I started to play that, and kept playing, continuing at "Play the World" & "Conquest", when launched.

I was really excited to play "Civilization IV". I really enjoyed Civ III & now am entertaining myself at Civ IV. I used to spend a good time at Civ World. I just play this game (except some times playing some adventure games installed in the system for kids). Since a couple of years I am pretty busy in my professional life, so I seldom get chance for my self. But now, after a long time, I have decided to at least take an hour or two for my personal entertainment. I once again started to play CIV, but got bored after playing similar games again and again. Well, I planned to buy the new "Beyond the Sword" expansion, and that's why I was searching through this forum, when I just been through SGOTM thing. I got a bit excited and posted that if some one can allow me to join a team. I believe I am not that bad player, just that I haven't participated in Civ Communities, and don't know about playing in teams. I really appreciate you all, especially remconius for providing me this chance.

Good stuff Patagonia!

A few remarks for the next turnset (lordofcivs?):
-I would like to see Turfan work and grow 5 cottages for extra cash.
-Ning Hsia can work the cottage of Beshablik instead of coast.

Welcome aboard! Thanks for a run-down on your 'Civ background' ... I was a Civ2 addict and got very much into the modding side of the game. Call to Power was pretty good, but a bit 'broken' in game balance terms if I recall. Civ3 didn't do much for me, but I got into it a bit when 'Conquests' came out - eventually won an Emperor level game and put it away ... my Mount Everest was climbed and that was that. Civ4 imho is the best of them to date, so I'm sure you've got many happy hours in front of you.

Succession games are great. I guess the thing to watch is to ensure that you've canvassed the roster in terms of direction and moves - if you're unsure, better to ask than to go off on a tangent. This team will certainly be happy to provide opinion if asked ;) :lol:. I guess the strategy in this game is pretty clear for us at the moment from going through the thread.

patagonia,

I like your suggestion on Spain and in particular the Kashi Vishwanath - makes a lot of sense to me :). I think that our finances will start to look much healthier once we start getting our teeth into the main continent and razing a few cities while getting our Catapults up and running. We should keep working those Cottages at home though!

Thanks remconius & Cam_H.

Well, I have installed SGOTM Mod 1.74 and the file uploaded by patagonia. Well, there is a good news that I didn't get any troubles opening the saved file
http://gotm.civfanatics.net/saves/civ4sgotm5/Trash_Team_SG005_AD1055_01.Civ4SavedGame.
So, as told, I got "Got it".

Now, there are a few more things I need to ask.

. Do we need to save in the same manner like it is saved above?

. Do we need to save manually or just copy the auto saved file at the end of 10th turn?

. How much time do I have to play these 10 turns?

. Are there any changes I need to make in the options menu?

Well, I will soon finish reading the whole thread and will be ready to post my plan for the next turn/s. If there will be any thing else, I will post here.

Thanks for giving me "UP". I have already started to enjoy. :lol:

One more thing, well a pretty silly question to ask, :blush:
. How to make Screenshot? With Print Screen I can make a .gif file using MS Paint. Is there any better way to do that?

Good to read you can open the save.

What you do after your turns is save the file manually, just before clicking end turn. The next player can make some changes before pressing enter and starting his turnset.

You need to upload your savegame to the website that I linked in the private message.

You have roughly 48 hours (2 days) to play 10 turns.

In the Options menu you can turn on the mods. It's a matter of personal preference, not necessary. Do make sure wait at the end of turn is on.

When you press PrtScr, a screenshot is saved in the My Games/civilization4/screenshots folder. You can upload this to a photoserver like photobucket (free account) and then link it in the report with the IMG tag provided by photobucket. Not a silly question at all. ;)
