SGOTM 05 - Trash Team

Don't have much time to contribute today, but just wanted to add a quick note to say go barbs!

And also, send a token spear with the axes to Saladin - he had a couple of chariots during my set and I wouldn't be surprised to come across others.

I'll take a proper look at things later and chime in to the grand strategy discussion then.

I think you can go ahead with the 2 galley/4 axe invasion of Saladin.

Then we have to decide who is next.

Cam, go ahead and play. Take those axes and get all over Saladin's business.

Well, 15 turns didn't quite give me time to invade Arabia as proposed, but we're poised to strike if we're prepared to risk it;

If this was single player, I wouldn't, but I tend to err on the cautious side.

... anyway ... back to the beginning ...

550BC - 460BC:

Happy enough with Cabert's set up and suggestions. The Galley navigating the long island to our east identifies it as ocean-bounded on its eastern side. Two chops go to The Pyramids in Beshbalik. Turfan produces an Archer (presumably for Ning-Hsia which had no military presence) and starts on Cabert's queued Obelisk for a pop so we can get the riverside Bananas in time. As also suggested by Cabert, Beshbalik gets a whipped Obelisk on the turn that it grows. Karakorum builds an Axe. The southern Galley spots Mecca - two Archers on a Hill with 40% culture. The Galley pillages Mecca's Fishing Boats for a whopping 7 gold before heading back to pick up the Axes. Barbarians were both pressuring and being pressured on the big continent.

445BC - 385BC:

Unfortunately aside from pillaging, this wasn't much of a period for our Barbarian allies. In 445BC the Barbarian's Seville is recaptured by Spain, and both Edo and Toledo survive Barbarian assaults. One Axe is whipped out of Karakorum, another later out of Turfan, while Ning-Hsia goes with a 'hopefully not too dumb' move of Granary > Lighthouse given the seafood resource. There was an Obelisk in the queue, but it would provide only more Jungle and Coast. Science drops to 50%.

370BC - 310BC:

Four Axes get on the two boats - we will also end up with a fifth Axe by the end of the round. Turfan gets its Obelisk helped by whip overflow. In 355BC Horseback Riding comes in, and next up; Writing. Turfan and Karakorum both get Keshiks put on top of their 'to do list'. We pick up Priesthood 'naturally' from the Barbarian research effect in 340BC. Cyrus loses Gordium to the Barb's, which is razed.

Our island;

Main continent to the north - two Barbarian cities and one lost one;

sgotm_550bc_barb_north.jpg

Main continent to the south - Alexander is 'rexing' to the west which is disappointing as there was a lot of space where I thought the Barbarians might settle;

There's still some movement points left on my last turn for us to determine whether Mecca's capturable with four 4XP Axes or not.

OK, I can play during the weekend.

Looking good, except for the assault on Mecca. There's no way four axes are going to cut it. But I'll land them anyway and see if can cut off his copper/horses.

Did we agree on the Pyramids or did I miss that part? Although got to say that police state would help big time. We just have so little production and both Cyrus and Izzy have stone. Hopefully this pays off.

Thanks for the nice pictures, Cam :)

I think we should land the axes to pillage and send the galleys back to pick up another 2-4 axes. Then we might be able to assault.

Agreed. We're already at war with Sally so dumping axes down isn't going to affect the number of troops he builds. May as well get some pillaging in to hinder his development while we wait for reinforcements to arrive.

we didn't agree on pyramids.
I started them to give us a cash infusion.

and the plan about the 4 axes isn't to suicide attack.
It was all we could possibly do to help, in case our barb friends strike first.
I would mve the m to arabian land, to insure saladin as enough to do, and bring a few more asap.

Does Saladin only have one city? Hard to tell from screenshots to date.

I'll try to play tonight but I'm having some trouble with my graphics card so I may have to skip this round. I'll let you know how it went tomorrow in the latest.

Skip me, I'm afraid I'll have to get a new graphics card altogether. :(

How do you say it? Sheet...

Stuge. Hope you get your graphics card sorted soon. We dont want to lose another person.

Roster

Remconius (on deck)
cabert
Cam_H (just played)
Stuge (skip)
patagonia (UP)

Lurking: Pigswill

And so the war begins...

At least now there's some WW we're actually responsible for, though it's insignificant compared to what the barbs have hampered us with.

Save.

Following on from the discussions, I landed our 4 axes on the forest across the river from Mecca and pillaged the horse pasture and mine in the following turns. This revealed that Medina (Sally's only source of metal) and Baghdad were both only protected by a single archer, and both of those cities were razed over the next few turns at the cost of a single axe. We've now got a Keshik over there which killed an archer on the same square as the chariot this turn (that's a settler party trying to refound Medina). Both axes nearby have got moves left, but the odds will be better if we wait for the city to be founded. Alternatively, the Keshik can finish things off next turn once it's been promoted again.

Back home, our cities are stuck at size 2 thanks to the +3 WW anger they have at size 3. Whip anger has just worn off in Karakorum and Turfan so they're ready for another crack. I whipped a barracks in Ning-hsia, so watch that doesn't grow back too quickly. Beshbalik has just been swapped back to the rice as it was about to starve.

Tech has sped up due to the war booty from Saladin funding deficit research. We've got writing and are most of the way through maths (en route to construction). I considered monarchy for HR, but I'm hoping we do eventually get the pyramids - Saladin's the only leader willing to talk peace and unless we can sign some treaties on the main island soon, police state is the best way out of this hole.

Hopefully the next player will be able to get 3-4 more units down ready to take Mecca. Be warned though, Saladin's got a settler on a galley by the sugar island to the east of our mainland. It's being chased by a barb ship at the moment, but may decide to ditch its cargo.

Played my turns, missed the pyramids, but got 494 gold :)

Captured Sally capital!

Need to sleep, so no more time to report.

THE SAVE

Good work guys - unfortunate about The Pyramids, but good to get a big payout to work our way towards the commercial tech's.

Again, hoping for Pigswill and Stuge that their respective technical issues are resolved soon.

How are the Barbarians going on the mainland?

Barbarians have a couple of relatively strong cities on the mainland. Unfortunately we cannot sign peace with any of the AI.

I suggest we finish off Saladin and build/keep 2-3 cities on saladin's continent. We need to grow our cities with HR building 4-6 archers per city.

Then we go either west colonizing the island and meeting our barbarian friends or we go east taking Alexander out in the process.
