SGOTM 05 - Trash Team

So, the plan this time around:

- Whip those unis
- Kill Persian stuff

Focus cities on the continent on production of Units.

Toledo is great, but Murcia and Pamplona (?) also need to focus on production. Barcelona and Seville can, once they reached a reasonable size and have uni's, focus on production (both have enough food and hills).

Any cities of Cyrus with food and hills should also focus on units. This way we will gain momentum as we hack and slash our way through Cyrus, Isa and Toku.

Persian front

I took Tyre without losses, got a bit lucky with a mace at 15something% odds. Then I razed Dariush Kabir (a small city north of Bactra and Tyre) at the cost of one mace. Currently we have a big stack assembling in Pasargadae and a catapult and a couple of maces near Ergil (north of Chehalis).

In other war-related news, Toku captured Toledo and is at Madrid's gates. Alex took Susa and Qin decided to dogpile on Cyrus.

I sold paper to Alex for 520 gold and signed OB with Qin.

Tech

Gunpowder came in and I took a pit stop at guilds for three turns. Chemistry is 10 turns away but we're running a defict we can't afford for much longer.

I whipped universities in K'korum, Turfan, Mecca and New Sarai. One is ready to be whipped in Barcelona and another one should soon be ready in Old Sarai.

Tidbits

Qin got a GE and a GM and apparently used the GE to build the Hagia Sophia. (Ooh, shiny!)

I wouldn't attack Toku until we have a good-sized force of grendiers.

A small side-note and I am thinking:
What? we lost our main unit production center? didnt know we are at war with Toku.... Or is there another Toledo? (I hope so)

God I have a lousy memory for names...

Toledo is cranking out knights like there's no tomorrow but Cordoba (probably) fell to the Japanese.

I must say I DLed the game to see how we could possibly lose our main unit production center, and was really relieved to see it was Cordoba.

A few random thoughts :
- we have 5 universities, and need 6 to start working on oxford. I guess whipping Barcelona's uni next turn (to allow karakorum to finish its temple) would be a good move.
- we have unhappies in a 2 cities (or more, I saw 2). One is finishing a forge (whipped? didn't check), and can start on growth right away (no need to wait for 1 turn and leave 5+ food tiles unworked), the other can start on the forge right now instead of the catapult.
- we have 2 defenders in a second line city, and only 1 in most first line cities. Obviously the pike I left there as lone defender can continue to defend it against fast moving knights, and the LB would be better in a front city. I'm not blaming you stuge, since I was the one who did put the LB on a long goto. But now it's not relevant anymore.
- we need hindu missionaries for the buddhist, taoist, jew cities. It's a low price happiness + culture + benefit from the religious civic.
- We need to decide what to do with cyrus. Now that Alexander has astronomy too and waits for more AIs to know it before trading it, we may want to sue for peace. Problem being he will build a settler to put in his galleon. I'd try the following : take (raze) ergili, which contains a galleon, then sue for peace (provided he gives something for peace, like astronomy for instance), then turn against isabella.

Summary:
Good news: Cyrus is Toast! Next turn WW should go down quite a bit.
Bad News: Toku is a tough cookie!

Isabelle is in the way, so she could be next!

Chemistry can be done in 1 turn (90% science) I suggest we drop science to 10-20% for a while to save money for upgrades. We can still complete maces and upgrade when they are CR3. Steel next.

We have Oxford, I built it in Karakorum. Whipped for 6 pop, but should regrow fast.

Plan for next turns: Build units in (almost) all continental cities and the halfway island. Declare on Isa and finish her off, she is weak. Upgrade to Grenadiers and prepare 2-3 power stacks for Toku. Then we can take him from multiple sides before he retalliates.

I assume there's no way to gift cities to barbs?
no, remco used the only way to do it, by reducing the defender to almost nothing

Thoughts :
- police state, now that we have the pyramids?
- Isabella next seems just right to get rid of "we long to join our homeland"
- What about alex and qin? Do we let them grow bigger or not?
- I suggest chemistry > steel > astronomy

I opened the save, and am currently looking at our cities. I will post a shopping list soon ;).

BTW, we got a great scientist incoming on the next turns from Mecca. With the Parthenon we might be able to "grow" a few others.

Not sure if we can use him for astronomy, or if there is another tech he prefers.

I think we should go after Isa, she is blocking our ships anyway, and Madrid would be a nice addition, especially to give Barcelona a bit more room.

On a whip related side-note, I dont think we should whip Barcelona or Seville. They are growing quite slowly and need to be big in order to use all their hills and commerce squares. Lets keep them big and producing units.

Halfway island does not anymore improvements and should just build cats.

Our old homeland can focus on commerce. With our limited traderoutes I think mercantilism is also good when we get Banking. Bunch of merchants should help our economy.

I mostly agree (except on the halfway island! they need a few more things) with remconius, but since I spent half an hour looking at every city, here's my "to do list". Of course, these are only suggestions, even if I use an imperative tone (it's just me).

The bolded cities don't have hinduism yet. This is the biggest waste I can think of! We have the shrine, we are running hindu as state religion, it gives much needed happiness and culture. I can't think of a better hammer investment than the 8 missionaries needed to spread hinduism to all our cities.

Karakorum needs growth + commerce. Nothing to change for now.
Beshbalik can be whipped soon. It's growth is so slow it's not even funny.
Turfan is not working the copper mine. This is a sin! With just some citizens on the copper mine and on the river mine, it finishes it's monastery this turn. I think the 1 commerce and 1 food lost for 8 hammers gained is a good move.
A forge can be whipped in ning hsia in 8 turns (after the growth + whip weariness exhaustion).
A GS is due in Mecca next turn. I think he would lightbulb (a part) of astronomy if we delay chemistry for a while (if we don't, he will bulb part of scientific method). We could use another settler in a while for a fishing village east of samarqand. Mecca is the best place to build it.
Old Sarai would benefit from a lighthouse (1 more good tile to work, then it's coast). It can certainly wait for the caravel to finish.
Barcelona lacks food, due to spanish culture on the cow and oasis. As soon as Madrid's down, this will be solved. I still think it needs farms more than cottages. The 2 unworked cottages could be replaced by farms.
Seville is unhappy, but that's mostly from WW. I would work the cottages instead of the mines to start growing again.
Murcia is our best food city. I would go for the GT there. I think this city will draft riflemen each turn in some distant future. The hindu missionary there is most welcome (although I think samaria needs it more than murcia). Isabella has a HA in the vicinity. Better bring a pike or something to deal with this before declaring on her. Her 1 pop city there should be razed IMHO.
Toledo could use some growth. I would farm the green and workshop the brown (I mean what's not yet improved)
Valencia is defended by a chariot. I know it's under no threat but keep it in mind. It needs a lighthouse and a courthouse soon. Not to mention hinduism!
New sarai needs a courthouse. Whippable in 5, I guess (after the catapult is done and a few hammers are put into it).
Pamplona is hiring an engineer. What for? There are good tiles to work, and no GE will ever be born there.
Samarqand needs a courthouse a lot more badly than a library.
Samaria needs culture. We need to bring a hindu missionary there asap.
Bacra needs growth, it's 7 pop away from it's happy cap. I would leave the mines for the silk and cottages, to bring a bit more food.
Tyre has an academy. I guess cottages there would bring more than farms and workshops.
Same for Pasagardae, but this one's really low on food. I can see no other future than working coast tiles for this city.
Persepolis will need workers and a lighthouse. What a prize!
I don't think that delaying chemistry for long to keep the parthenon going is worth it though.

I really think that switching to police state asap is the strongest civic move for a while.

Now, if you disagree with this list, please do at least consider my point, before rejecting it altogether.
PS : There is still a lot to do for our workers!
PS 2 : I don't quite agree with mercantilism being better than our trade routes. If we declare on isabella soon, toku will open his borders. And we may just be a few turns away from astronomy, opening trade routes with qin.

Mostly agree, a few remarks:

-Engineers are hired when the city grows, very annoying and they need to be put back in the field.
-Samarqand it building a lib to grab more tiles, coutrhouse can be prioritised.
-Turfan: easily said to trade few commerce for more hammers, but here is my reasoning. Turfan can build stuff and ship it to the continent but it will take forever. It's more useful with full-grown cottages, increasing long term commerce. Working mines will delay cottages from growing. Our production of units is now mainly done on the continent.

Another note, should we move to Theocracy, being in full war mode and building lots of units all over the place. Even with vassalage (?) as Karakorum is not the main source of income anymore. It still has enough cottages/food to make oxford beneficial. We'd produce 8 xp units, ie instant combat I, CR2 Maces. 1-2 successful attacks and they can be promoted/upgraded to CR3 Grenadiers. This should give us more momentum.

Does Bureaucracy have that much effect? +50% commerce in Karakorum.

We also have Mecca, Barcelona, Seville fueling our economy.

It sounds like things are progressing well.

(Still) Can't open the save to check, but my gut feeling would be that the GS will want to bulb printing press. If we've already got that, then please ignore what I've just written.

Police state will be a good civic to deal with WW, but how will that compare to the loss of HR happy? Given how crippling WW was early in the game, I'm guessing we should be better off, but if we're relying on a lot of military police in older cities like Mecca/Karakorum, that's something to consider.

How are we doing in terms of the domination target? Does it look like the main continent will give us enough land, or will we have to go after Alex/Qin too?

==========

In terms of my continued (un)availability, 1st October still seems promising, but I won't have my PC back until the following weekend, which means playing on 7th/8th. Sorry about this, it's getting beyond a joke now, but hopefully I'll be able to get a couple of turns in before the end of the game!

You're obviously right about printing press, just forgot about it. Then again, PP is a good tech :mischief: .

About land, we're about 35% now, with lots of culture wars + tiles missing under Mecca/samarqand.
IMHO we need to take down either alex or qin.
