SGOTM 07 - Fifth Element

So... we are hell bent for leather on the path for liberalism. What are we going to take with it, and will we have all the prerequisites satisfied when we get there? This may have been discussed in other posts in the past, but I think we need to make sure we don't lose sight of this.

Astronomy, which needs Calendar + Optics (which needs Compass + Machinery)

Greatbeyond, that it's not a bad trade, can you try to see if the "can you spare it for a good friend" works?
We cannot convert to buddism, we don't have that religion.

And as i already said sometime the best partner is a strange one (Monty, GK) so, why not Izzy?

If Izzy accept to declare to Wash only for friendship, we can make the calendar deal with a buddist civ.
Of course we can OB with her if she declares, for nothing or else.

The rest of the plan is clear, i guess.

Built Archer and upgrade to G1. We now have 3 Archers, 3 Axes, and a Spearman.

Washington moves his two LBs off the Silver to 2S of our city. He moves 2 LBs onto the Fur, there are still 7 LBs in NY. It appears he wants to pillage for Gold.

Our Worker is moved 1N to the PH 1W of our city.

Traded Isabella CS for a MA against Washington, she also gives us Calendar and 10G.

The only thing anyone wants to trade with us at this point is HBR, and they want a high price.

I guess the questions for the next turn are (unless somone can think of some others)

Question #1 - Do we complete the Monastery or build another Archer?

Question #2 - Do we want to make any other trades.

Question #3 Worker actions ( besides keeping out of the way)

Question #4 Do we want to move and Archer and Axe to the Stone and to the Marble to protect them?

Washington will not talk with us and we are down to -6 with him.

Alex is at war with HC and Tokugawa. No one else will sign a MA with us.

4T to Paper as it currently stands.

Units on the marble could lure the stack from NY, so if anything, we could try to save the stone. I think the archers should stay home and fortify. They will just be wasted trying to leave the city. 2 Axes to the stone. In that case, we should probably make 1 more archer before the monastery (again, if/while we can do it in 1 turn)

No trades, wait for construct/Feudal.

I'd finish the monastary then archer spam for a bit and perhaps a worker after that depending on the carnage. The 4LB will probably move to the deer and quarries next and pillage those and then attack. Still 4 turns away. I still think we have to see a big stack coming in at some point.

The worker can just do some cat-and-mouse pre-chopping and things.

2 unpromoted axes on a hill can barely resist to a LB.
1 G1 archer+axe can be better, and if i have to choose, i'll protect the marble.
Since Wash is not seriously threaten us, i vote to complete the monastery (so we don't loose hammers, and with the overflow the archers come faster).

GB, have you signed an OB with Izzy?
I'm in favour of this, now. Opinions on this?

Just to know: if we arrive to Lib without the Optics, what we do?
1) we can try to stop at 1 turn and research something else, or
2) we'll get the almost useless Nationalism?

1 G1 archer+axe can be better, and if i have to choose, i'll protect the marble.

G1archer = 3 * 1.45

Axe = 5 * 1.25

It's not even close.

Marble is not good because even if our axes win against the 2 LB, there is another STACK of LB that can finish them off. And then we will have lured them next to our city!

Will start another turn in about an hour. It seems the consensus is protecting either the Stone or Marble is a risky proposition. Moving just two units to either, matches 2LBs (attack of 6.6) vs two Axes (defense of 6) or two Archers (def of 4.35). Either way the odds are not good.

I am inclined to think we are safe for 1 more turn so complete the Monastery

We have not signed OB with Isabella yet. How do people feel about this?

1 more turn completed. Washington has pillaged our Deer and Fur and is moving 1 more LB toward us. He still has 7 LBs in NY

We completed the Monastery and are set to produce another Archer.

Paper is 3 turns away

Alex, Elizabeth, and HC will trade us construction. Liz and HC will give us HBR, Construction and (HC) 10G

We have a lot of techs that Alex doesn't and he will be our best trade. He wants COL, Med, and Monarchy. I might be able to fine tune it a little but don't want to accidentally make a trade while testing.

Washington will not negotiate yet.

We will get a GS next turn. Next turn we will be able to convert to HR. Right now we have 3 malcontents in our city.

Relations - Asoka and Elizabeth are mad at us for trading with Alex, it doesn't seem to have dropped our ratings yet.
I will play another turn in the morning, about 11 hrs from now.

Question #1
What to do with the GS?

Question #2
Next build?

Question #3
Do we convert to HR next turn?

Questin #4
What trade(s) do we want to make?

If you thought we had a lot of posts per turn, look at Murky's. Are they really discussing strategy or just gossiping? :p

Looks good GB. We still have a pulse -- and now HR is just one turn away (assuming we can afford the anarchy). I don't suppose there is any way we can find to see this dow as a good thing, is there? ;)

IMHO:
1. The GS should be saved to help bulb Education.
2. Next build should be an archer.
3. Convert to HR next turn unless George moves that stack out of New York.
4. No more trades for now.

Hey, what does "MA" (as in what we got from Izzy for CS) stand for?

Agree GS bulb for Edu.
Agree 1 more Archer
Agree No more trades for now

HR....I know we would benefit greatly from this, but what if we get feudal in the next few turns and then we can take HR and Serfdom to rebuild our land? What does it really cost us to skip HR for a few more turns? A few hammers? I'm ok with HR next turn, but something to think about....and we should make another worker soon for the rebuild.

I think we should make the trade for construction and whatever else we can get before we stop trading.
I must have missed this. What was the trade for construction that was offered?

Also, is feudalism really a possibility? How? Maybe for paper??

Ya know, figuring out the trade possibilities would really be a lot easier if we could use the save. If it isn't against the rules, then why not post it here in the thread?

OK for the 1st and 2nd, lot less for the 3rd.
We desperately need some tech, Alex is backwards, why not? Bad relations with Lizzy and Asoka? bah

After all those discussions on HR i now think we must revolt ASAP.
Serfdom? i never used it, we'll solve our problems with a 2nd worker, better stay in Caste.

Good morning (here at least) to all.

It looks like the consensus has been reached to save the GS for Education and 1 more Archer.

I am also inclined to trade Alex for Construction and Calendar. It will cost us 3 older Techs that most other Civs already have. As for the negative relations with Asoka and Elizabeth, how about as soon as they advise us to stop trading we do? That gives us a bonus with them, and as Alex is busy fighting HC and Tokugawa, I don't think we have to worry about him.

Revolting to HR looks like a majority rule. The only downside to this would be like Balthalion said, if Washington moves a huge stack next to our city.

I'll let you know how things go shortly.

We have traded COL and Monarchy to Alex for Construction and 10G. Washington will not deal with us yet. As projected, he moved 2LBs onto the Stone and 1 LB onto the Marble. He has 8 LBs in NY, 2 LBs 1W of NY, and a stack of 1LB and 4 Archers 1SW of NY. Apparently he wants to trim his force of Archers on our defenses.
I mentioned earlier about Walls. Do we think it would be a good investment to build Walls for the extra 25% defensive bonus. It will take 2 turns with some tile mm or 4 turns if we leave things as is. If we try to get Walls in 2 turns it pushes Paper back 1T

Question #1
What to build next? Walls, Archer, Cat, or something else?

Question #2
Are we still ~agreed on revolting to HR this turn?

Elizabeth says she has a War Elephant and wants to know where she should put it. I have a suggestion :mischief:

OK, it looks like it';s going alright, but I've been away for 2 nights. Pls post the save to this thread, GB, so we can have a look. I don't like the sound of angering 2 of our potentials, Liz and Asoka for Alex's old techs.
