SGOTM 07 - Unusual Suspects

Hold on here, let's not jump to conclusions. Are entire teams posting in other teams' threads? If individual players have dropped out from their teams, can they post in other teams' threads? Maybe what you're seeing is individual players who have dropped out posting in other threads. If you look at Murky Waters' Power, it just took a big dive. Are you sure this player of theirs didn't throw in the towel and quit in the face of imminent defeat?

That's possible, but I don't think so. AlanH would have removed them from the player list and they would've reported in the maintenance thread. Of course, maybe Liz crushed them with redcoats. ;)

Well, regardless of what other teams are doing or not, we're going to finish up our game strong. As far as our game goes:

I'm pretty sure we'll need to pillage the Well to deny Liz the Oil. Occupying the tile will deny the ability to work it, but won't deny access to it.

I am wary of committing Caesar's forces in Washington to do anything while Liz has that Artillery stack in York. I think we should get Caesar to take Kyoto & reassess from there. Liz might send her units in York out into the open that we can pick off. Also, if we send Caesar to Nottingham, which units would we be using to kill off its defenders?
 
Plan is pretty basic as most of the military items will be adjusted during the play set based on what actions are taken by Liz etc.

1. Declare on Liz and Take out Kyoto. Tell Ceasar to hit Kyoto.
2. After Kyoto move on York.
3. York to London with Nottingham last.

Naval Battle:
Move the BShips into Liz's territory and sink the closest Destroyer. The goal here is to goad her into attacking our ships in her waters positioning our ships for bombardment of her cities. This will also cause her to produce water units in both coastal cities. (I believe)
I will move the 3 infantry that are wandering towards Nottingham to take out the Oil there. They will adjust based on the movement of Liz's troops in York.


Production:
Complete the current BShip and then back to tanks.

Research:
Switch to Radio (and Ceasar as well) on our march to Robotics.

If no major objections I will play this turn set tomorrow night. I don't believe I will have Liz out in 10 turns but she should be close to out based on how many turns I have to spend healing up units.
 
Just when I thought I was about to catch up, I just got a pile of work. Hopefully if things stay quiet in other areas, then by the middle of next week I will have caught up with all my work, but that could just disappear in a moment. So I am unfortunately unavailable at least until then.

JC will move those units out for sure, he'll most likely suicide them on York. I expect him to leave only 2 infantry soldiers in the city, maybe an arti or two. He did the same in Antium and Madrid during the war with Fred. He has 2 arties near Washington and 3 arties in Washington, if I remember correctly. We don't need to use units for Nottingham, JC has enough to take it.

I'd tell him to attack Nottingham too, better that than suicide missions on York. We could move one inf to Washington for additional defense.

Anyway, your plan is just fine, these differences are not so important. We could discuss this a bit more, but basically we are ready for play.

I'm glad to report that my system is operational again. I still have some problems with my other hard drive but civ works fine on the new one. :cool:
 
Naval Battle:

This scenario has me nervous that Liz would pillage the Fish & Clam north of Nottingham & duck into the city immediately. Also, if we don't block the water route to our capital, Liz might cause trouble. Getting the Fish & Clam pillaged would be costly, as we would have to burn two turns of production to restore them instead of building two Tanks.

Turn 249 -- 1695AD
Set research to Radio.
Wait one turn on war to get out that 4th battleship.
Want to give Ceasar a chance to get his artiesup by us into a city.

Turn 250 -- 1700AD
Great Scientist is born -- light bulb is for Fission?? Doesn't seem worth it to me. I'm going to embed him in the city. At least that way we can get something out of him before it's over.

Liz steps out of Kyoto -- in between turns. Tanks have two upgrades to use. I use 1 for Combat Level 1 .. attack the stack outside the city. Use the 2nd upgrade after that attack and have them blitz on the city.
Total Losses -- 1 Tank, 1 Infantry
My luck sucks -- our Medic ALMOST lost to a War Elephant.
4 Tanks got to do blitz attack for double XP. Liz lost the entire stack and has 1 Sam infranty left at 3.8 health.

Battle went much better then I expected. Let's see her counter attack back home.

We loose a Caraval on the oceans. The brain that is Ceasar looses 2 arty to Liz by walking them up to her city.

Turn 251 -- 1705AD
Ceasar takes Kyoto -- On to York.
Liz looses 2 Destroyers --- 3 left. She is playing D on her resources. Ceasar as 2 Frigates in her water as well. She should attack those and then pull back into her City.

Use the new tank to attack the unit on her oil well. Next turn I may be able to pillage. Have to see her troop movements.

Give Monty Assembly Line, artillary and railroad. I won't be giving him anything else.

We loose 2 more caravals but take out a frigate with 1 of them.

Turn 252 -- 1710AD
Oil is destoryed.
Liz is sending and Arty and a Sam up to Nottingham. Intercept and kill them.
Ceasar is getting to York to fast. Redircted him to Nottingham. I will heal and then hit York 1st.

Turn 253 -- 1715AD
Troop movement + healing. Should be moving on York next turn or the following. Nothing else really to report.

Turn 254 -- 1720AD
Get open border with Saladin.

Capac and Kublai are getting ready to go to war.
Louis is getting ready to go to war.

Turn 255 -- 1725 AD
Ceasar takes Nottingham.
Can't rebuild well yet -- still in Liz's Culture. York falls next turn.

Turn 256 -- 1730 AD
York has 1 arty left -- no losses for us. Used 2 tanks for top units. Artillery finished off the city.
Ceasar is now the most powerful civ in the game.

Turn 257 -- 1735 AD
Ceasar takes York.

Battleships bombard London down to 8%. Stack of 9 tanks will soften city for Ceasar on next turn.

Turn 258 -- 1740 AD
Liz attacks our tanks with Sam -- she looses.

Cathy asks for our help with Medicie -- I tell her where to go.

London attack was worst for us. Only tanks are there.
Losses -- 3 tanks, we won 1 fight at 40% odds, was pushing it to save JC's troops.
2 arties and 1 Sam left for Ceasar to kill off.

I'm glad to report that my system is operational again. I still have some problems with my other hard drive but civ works fine on the new one. :cool:

I would probably be able to play a turnset in the next week if necessary. But to be honest, now that the melee is on, I don't feel confident in my war skills and think our team is better served if someone else plays the War President. I would prefer being skipped, iow. On the other hand, if you have a short turnset where we are building/rebuilding/healing, I'd be happy to take that and am available whenever.

I didn't check on Westpoint ... IMO don't build it just keep cranking out the tanks and wipe up the map fast.

Hu/Ku are preparing for war, I believe they are going to go after Alex (they are pleased with us). We really need Asoka to die so that it takes the pressure off of two of Ceasars cities and get Delhi growing culture wise.

Here is my proposal.

We need to attack both countries at once.

Alex force -- 100% tanks. We rumble into his land with 8 - 10 tanks (we have these atm) and use our BShips to do the bombardment and maybe pickup another promotion from all his Caravals.

Asoka force. We have a TON of infrantry and artillary. These units would spear head the force into Asoka's lands. We will take a few losses here but shouldn't be all that bad. A couple tanks with them to pickup troops that Asoka has running around or busting the top units in his cities would be doog.

We have Ceasar assist us on the Alex front therby taking away the chance of Hu/Ku expanding into those cities. Then let Ceasar come up and clean up Asoka's cities that we have pulverrized.

We need about 1 turn for healing (we don't need everyone at 100%). Take that turn heal and then go. Ceasar easily has the force for this.

When both of them are dead we will be going in after Hu/Ku. This battle will be tricky and I suggest building 2 - 3 BShips during the Alex/Asoka war to get ready for them.

We are really at the mop up stage on the AI's but couple suffer a setback if we do something stupid. Using the Bships for bombardment (like I did on Liz) frees up our slow moving Arty / Infantry force to go to a different target while our tanks go with this ships.

That would be my plan going forward.

Let's look at some details to improve our game even more:

  • You decided to wait for one more turn for another battleship and JC's deployment. Vra recommended attacking immediately with CR units because Liz had the entire stack in Kyoto. She moved some forces out on the next turn, Vra wanted to avoid that. How many did she move out? However, you managed to capture Kyoto very effectively. Only 1 inf and 1 tank lost, impressive! :goodjob:

  • You settled the GS. It was better to wait for Radio, Computers would be in line then.

  • Give Monty Assembly Line, artillary and railroad. I won't be giving him anything else.

  • Why not?! This looks like a "be mean to the AI" impulse. Do you have a reason? Monty is almost dead now, he only has one coastal city left. He could have used Combustion for destroyers and Industrialism for battleships, tanks and marines.

  • We've lost 3 caravels, maybe you could've prevented that? I've lost a caravel too before, didn't look closely where it was. :mischief:

  • We finally have open borders with Saladin! That silver has brought another +1 for resources after all those years of trading. He is cautious at us now. Saladin is a threat to us, he is researching very fast. Not too fast I think, but we have to watch him closely. He could also build the UN, he has Mass Media.

  • You were flexible in the war and took Nottingham first to prevent JC suiciding on York. Just a question for better planning in the future: did you heal the tanks in Washington as planned or in Kyoto instead?

  • You took York without casualties! We had some casualties near London, but pushing forward to prevent JC from suiciding a lot of troops is a smart thing to do. :thumbsup:

Other comments:

Louis is planning to dogpile on Monty and Hu/Cu are going after Liz, they hate her. Of course, these are the most probable possibilities. ;)

JC took the Clam for himself when Nottingham's culture expanded. This is not a problem, Cyrus has Clam for trade. Hydro plant is also an option, that would remove 2 :yuck:.

JC has some cities seriously undefended, but that shouldn't be a problem against Asoka. We can heal the tanks in Washington and push forward to Bombay in a few turns. Cathy is furious at us now, we have to be careful there. Monty won't last long, she is getting really dangerous. Of course, we are getting very dangerous too! :viking:

Great Scientist -- my bad there, the extra hammers with him embedded allow us to still grow and build a BShip in 1 turn. I didn't know about puters .. my bad, but we actually could turn off research we have this game in hand now. To me it's about production, production, production and I prefer tanks over Mobile Infrantry anyway.

Liz stepped 1/2 her stack out of the city. IMO this worked out better. It guaranteed that I could squash the city and allowed me to get some nice blitz attacks from all the tanks. The upgrades on the tanks are mostly +1 combat, +1-2 city attack now. What I have found is that +1 combat made a HUGE difference on the tanks being able to take out units in the field. I don't know how many of Liz's troops I killed out in the field. Being able to do that is a great way to kill off their city defense and protect JC's unprotected units (man the AI is SOOOO dumb).

Hu/Ku not going after Alex is good, then we can just concentrate on Asoka. IMO though we have enough troops to do both at the same time. Once I get to tanks my single movement units can't keep up with the tanks so I send them on to other things while the tanks operate on another front.

Healing Units: I really didn't spend much time healing. The units are strong enough with promotions etc to keep the front moving without having to stop. By rotating new units in you can actually take tanks in with 3/4 life and still have 90's for victory chance. This is a tactic I use quite often to keep the front moving without having to stop to heal. We have SOOOOOOO many units that it makes this very easy to use.

IMO we could stop making military and still win this game the AI cannot compete with the combined power of Ceasar and us and we need to push hard and fast to wrap this up. The best way to deal with Cathy is to clear off our continent, put a large navy in the water with 4 transport, sail over and destroy her capitol while we are waiting for culture pops. By hitting her homeland she will never come across to us.

So nail Asoka FAST and hard. 3 - 4 turns to wipe him out.
Alex next -- 3 - 4 more turns for that.
Take 2 turns to heal.
Attack Hu/Ku next. This battle should be VERY fast. Hu should be out in 2 turns maximum. The infantry/Artillery stack hit his land bound city and the tanks take the city on the sea with our BShips doing the bombardment. At the same time we tell Ceasar to attack Ku cities. We leave Cu's cities in shambles and immediately move our forces down to Ku's lands and take the city that we didn't tell Ceasar to go to.

Bam continentn clear .. estimates for me is about 20 turns to wrap up our continent.

During that time we should build 15 tanks and 5 BShips.
After that we should alternate Transport / Marine for 10 - 12 turns getting 5 - 6 Transports and 6 Marines. Send the Marines/Tanks and Artillery over to Cathy's capitol and raze it. That should secure the victory for us IMO.

I think we should attack both Alex and Asoka now, I like that idea. We need to talk about logistics and unit deployment again, we have to plan for the war with Hu/Ku. Attacking Cathy while waiting for culture is an option too, with proper planning we could capture her cities.
