SGOTM 09 - Geezers

:goodjob: Great stuff :goodjob:

Good progress on the tile improvements - I think we should look to improve the cows and the second wine as soon as we have free workers.

I notice the Greenland question has been settled for a little while - the barbs have a city there.

I think after the Odeon we should consider slotting a market into Athens. It will net us 10+ gold/turn, which is well worth the investment.

The military situation is looking really good. Erik should have some fun when his birthday celebrations are over :)

Yes, at the time, we were happy capped at 4, so I went for a preserve. With the first wine on-line, we now have some headroom so we can stop preserves long enough to improve the other tiles.

At least they picked a good spot. We should go after them fairly soon, maybe while we are researching to Paras to get Joao.

In the mean time, our next mace in Athens should go up to Sparta as an MP. We also will need a galley or trireme to protect our nets.

Yes, Athens should get a Market for sure... in fact maybe before the Odeon.

I'm pretty happy with where things are at. Really things have been looking up ever since the setback of the settler being eaten by the nuclear barbarians.

Yup, no criticism of what's happened so far, it's looking good. Just mentioning it as a suggestion for the next turnset. If nothing else, pasturing the cows should ensure that any further barb landings target that tile ... which is exactly where we'd like them to go  I'm quite encouraged that their landings have dropped off though ... maybe the gambit was moderately successful without shedding blood :)

Actually yes, that might well be better. It's only 3 turns for the market ...

@HB: Things could hardly have got worse than they were at that happy point in the game's history :D

Nice job Hawk.

Theology before Education - please think about this - AP palace for the hammer bonus and we can't get the Uni's for Oxford until we have 6 good cities with Uni's and that won't be for some time so there's no hurry for Edu.

Atlantis - I did WB test with nat wonders in a barb city - when I took the city all of the nat wonders were gone.

I will try and have a plan together tomorrow.

I think the barb landings have slowed down because they've exhausted their initial huge supply of planted archers and now have to build any troops they want to use.

I've been tied up for a few days and unable to comment, but have just been running through the recent posts to catch up. I was very pleased to read of the progress made in the conquest of Hammurabi. :goodjob:

Does anyone else feel that a couple more airships would really help to crack the remaining resistance in Dur-Kur? Take that city and his military resistance is gone. We want this war finished as soon as we can humanly achieve it, and back onto the science bus.

A little side-thought about Atlantis. What are they spending their time doing there? They only have a small bunch of longbows, although they do have 4 galleys. Perhaps we can expact a larger scale attack in a few years, involving 2 or 3 galleys. I wouldn't be particularly worried about it, though, and I think the 'Misotu gambit' has been a prudent precaution. We just have to watch out for the next upgrade of unit type.

Are we heading straight for Liberalism on the technology front? And if so, then what do we want as our free tech?

The AP is certainly an interesting suggestion. Once we get Paper next turn we have the option of Sankore as well. Whilst we might not be able to make full use of Edu immediately the fact of having it will make it easier to see if any of the AI can research Liberalism. Now that we have met the other AI Astro becomes more attractive for the additional income it would generate.

Do we intend to completely conquer Hammy or just vassilise him. If the latter then which of his cities do we want?

Some other thoughts:

Corporations:

This map looks real good for Sushi. I count 20 Sushi resources on our continent, we should be able to trade for several more (if we have things to trade, so see comments about wonders). Sushi can be had early because we already know Medicine. However, we will need a merchant to found it. This means we need to reach Economics first. The biggest challenge with Sushi will be finding enough sources of smilies to take advantage of all that food.

I also think we want Mining Inc, there are at least 8 Mining resources on our continent. However, to get it, we need a GE. This will be harder to accomplish. I think we need to work engineers whenever possible, including Athens right away.

Wonders:

I think we should consider Broadway pretty soon. This gives us a smilie. It also gives us a unique resource to trade for Sushi or Mining resources. Each musical is worth .5 food or 1 hammer in every city. Same for Hollywood and Rock and Roll. Broadway is not urgent since nobody else can build it, but we should keep our eyes out for AI's getting Electricity.

I was about to sign up for both of these ideas. Given we expect to have a bunch of cities, the two together could add up to a pile of hammers and beakers. However, now I am wondering about AP. We are only two turns from MM which obsoletes it, and our desire for Hollywood for resources to trade will drive us there. So I'm not sure this is a long-living wonder, but in concert with Sankore it could still be good. I guess I am on the fence on this one. (If we want AP though we will have to hustle. Wang has founded Christianity already.)

Diplomacy

We may want to think about an AI to keep as a friend on the other continent. Would be nice to maintain foreign trade routes. Problem is all the nutcases, going to be hard to manage the diplo situation. Our having a religion will not help.

It looks like Wang's days are numbered. At the moment, he is too strong for the other AI's, but they all hate him. At some point, we may get a chance to dogpile him and grab some land over there.

Tech Path

So many options :crazyeye:. Potential beeline targets:

Rifling: For paras to get Joao.
Economics and Corporations: For trade routes and Sushi.
Astronomy: For foreign trades routes, observatories (and therefore early labs).
Railroad: For Mining Inc.

I think our first priority is Rifling. We are close to it already, and it is one of the highest value techs we can grab from Liberalism. This allows us to grab the rest of our continent.

I would then vote we tech up the Economics/Corp path. We don't want to miss the free merchant. Also, I am hoping we can trade for most of the techs on the Astonomy path.

So, tech path: Paper, (maybe Theology), Edu, Guilds, Gunpowder, Liberalism (Rifling).

EDIT: War

I would not vassilize Hammy. I think all of his cities are decent, no reason to take the "return to homeland" hit.

I would not vassalise Hammurabi either. There seems no point other than to speed up the wars slightly.

As for corporations: have we considered the possibility that we might need Allied Aluminium as well? I can't imagine us being handed aluminium on a plate in a Space game.

Rifling is still 45 turns away at our current research rate. It requires Paper(1)->Edu(15)->Guilds(7)->Gunpowder(10)->Lib(12). Astro is 36 turns away and requires Paper(1)->Edu(15)->Compass->Optics(5)-Lib(12). Economics is 41 turns away and requires Paper(1)->Edu(15)->Guilds(7)->Banking(6)-Lib(12).

I can certainly see the attraction of Rifling but I wonder if it's really the best tech path.

Rifling is only useful if we have enough hammers somewhere to actually build Paratroopers quickly. In my test games, paratroopers were good but it just took too long to build them. I would have been better off with more older troops. If we can get a hammer heavy Heroic Epic type city in my then, then Rifling would be awesome.

I have not been able to make time for reviewing the save. Perhaps a skip is in order as I know I will not be able to get to it tonight.

Misotu's next on the roster in case anyone was wondering.

Hallo, I'm just posting quickly to say that sadly my father-in-law passed away yesterday so I won't be around very much for a little while. He was eighty years old and had a good life (and a good death - he passed away in his sleep) but we will miss him

He was Mayor of this town, and a Councillor, JP and Chairman of the Bench for many years, so I guess his funeral will be well-attended and there'll be a lot of arrangements and other things to sort out.

I will be back, but in the meantime please skip me. Good luck with the game!

I am sorry for your loss, Misotu.

Once you are ready to play again we will put you back in the roster.

EDIT : Oops, just noticed that I am next in the roster then. I will try to have a look at it tonight.

My sympathies for your loss Misotu.
