SGOTM 09 - Xteam

Finished my PhD defense on friday, it was pretty intense so I took the weekend to unwind, just catching up on things now.
Congratulations! [party]
Hope all went well.

Hip Hip, Hooray for PK!

Here is a link to a reproduction of a Calvin and Hobbes comic strip that I planned on displaying as the introductory slide at my own thesis defense 14 years ago. I'm sorry to say that I chickened out, as fitting as the strip was.

Back on topic...Is it better to use the Rushmore-for-cash ploy in cities that don't yet have forges, or does it not matter?

It went pretty well. I'm the first of a group of 5 of us who have all finished very recently or will be finishing in the next few weeks so I took one for the team and had an open question and answer session (as opposed to a closed defense where only the examiners are present-not sure what you americans have to go through but I hear it's even tougher). I think my supervisor started enjoying himself a bit much with such an audience and I ended up getting grilled pretty hard on a bunch of "basic" physics (2 hours of questions).
At one point I was unable to rearrange a (very) simple algebraic equation so it was a pretty humbling experience.
Overall though it went well and the guys appreciated an advance warning of what to expect for their own defenses.

Have to make some corrections to my work this week and then I'll need to do a quick run around of the family to say my goodbyes before the shift to scotland.

I hope to get internet hooked up for my laptop pretty quickly once I'm over there but I have no idea when I'll be able to afford a real computer to play Civ on. I've been pretty well behaved over the last few years with respect to computer related spending so I have some ammo with which to defend myself when my wife launches her assault on my gaming plans (she attacks at pleased).
If SCT plays a decent length turnset coming up though I think the rest of the game will be pretty straightforward in the sense that our options will be very limited.

Rushmore for cash gives us roughly 2 gold per hammer invested so it's better than building wealth directly. There are still many buildings that will give even more return on the invested hammers. Courthouses, forges and factories are mandatory in Mining Inc. cities and libraries are also very strong in cities with decent commerce and mandatory in Standard Ethanol cities. The decision to build more Universities, Observatories and Laboratories probably need to be done on a city by city basis. As the end of the game draws near building wealth will become increasingly attractive since there won't be time for the buildings to pay back invested hammers.

Congrats

In Denmark a PhD defense is public - I know for sure it is at the Technical University. I don't recall being asked any questions outside of the subject of the dissertation though.

I think the game will continue to be complex until the end. Lots of logistics to handle with wars going on and worker actions, chopping last space parts.

It looks like we are behind the Russian teams. This raises the question of how many turns can be saved by launching an incomplete space ship. Is it enough to justify the risk of failure?

The only parts that are difficult to complete quickly are the two engines. You can launch with just 1 engine with a slight delay to victory. But launching with 1 engine doesn't risk failure.

It looks like I'm ready to play. I'll plan on starting in about 8 hours unless I hear objections.

Have at it, SCT.

Nice going, PK. Know you're glad the burden is lifted. Wish my defense had been public -- one of my committee raised frivolous issues that set me back several months, and I don't think he would have done so with an audience of students as well as the committee.

Oh - good going on the PhD PK. :goodjob:

It's starting to look like having a PhD is a prerequisite for being in X-Team!?

I played part way through T137 and I'm calling it a night.

Seoul, Pyongyang, and Nampo are all ours and a couple other Korean cities will fall in the next turn or two. We will be ready to declare on Shaka in two turns.

Not much to comment on, Justins city Huamanga has coal that he needs to improve, we might have to gift him another worker to speed that up.
As does Vandal which we may need to go ahead and conquer in order to let justin take control of the tile.

Looking good SCT. Looks like Korea is about to become a has been.

Is it more efficient to gift Justinian a Worker or to maintain control of a Worker until Coal is connected and then gift it to him?

Concur, Vandal need to be taken and gifted.

:hmm: I'm in deep trouble then!
Do they have a PhD in Civology? I certainly seem to need it... :mischief:

Nice to hear from you MP.

One issue I need clarified is how to give Justinian Steam Power. I've given him Guilds and Banking, but he needs Replaceable Parts before Steam Power. But we don't have Printing Press, and this is a prereq for SP. Without SP, Justinian can't hook coal.

Leif, without PhDs, you and I can form the dunce faction of XTeam.

It looks like a choice of spending one turn to research Printing Press or doing without until it can be traded for, although it looks like that may never happen?

Since HC has two cities and we go to war with him once we declare on Shaka, once he breaks away, can settle a peace for Divine Right. Then we could get Justinian on Printing Press. Doesn't look like he'd finish it before the end of the game though.

Doesn't look like we have many alternatives... :hmm:
Research it or forget it?

Where is my tall, conical cap?

Odd that Justinian didn't get Replaceable Parts when we liberated him.

Can we generate enough Great persons and still spend a GS on bulbing PP? We need 2+3+4=9 for the planned golden ages. Don't have the game in front of me.

For the dunce faction, you guys make awfully sharp CIV players!

And I've met people with PhD after their name who leave me wondering how they managed to get one...! (Noone on XTeam in that category of course!)

I don't think it has much to do with intelligence! ;) <Tongue planted firmly in cheek>

Perhaps CP has already gifted Steam Power to Justinian? That would explain why we can't give it to him :D.

I think we should go after kwaDukuza first. It's faster to capture a coastal city first but I don't think speed is the issue here. The most important thing is how fast we can chop the Versailles and preferably do this before many Zulu cities comes out of revolt.

How about stealing DR from HC? It may take too long before he breaks free from Shaka and stealing might be cheaper than self research. Just in case we could put our spy points on HC and build a spy for fortification in Vilcas or Vilcamba.

EDIT: Would like to see a courthouse in Knossos soon. It doesn't have many hammers so this has to be planned ahead. Knossos is one of the cities that will get Standard Ethanol.
EDIT: I see that we have been beaten to the gold+iron spot in the middle east. I guess we should settle on one of the gold hills then and liberate

Re Justin: gift him steel and then see if railroad shows up on his researchable list in the diplomacy window, that way we'll know if he has steampower already?
