Congratulations!Finished my PhD defense on friday, it was pretty intense so I took the weekend to unwind, just catching up on things now.

PaulisKhan said:It went pretty well. I'm the first of a group of 5 of us who have all finished very recently or will be finishing in the next few weeks so I took one for the team and had an open question and answer session (as opposed to a closed defense where only the examiners are present-not sure what you americans have to go through but I hear it's even tougher). I think my supervisor started enjoying himself a bit much with such an audience and I ended up getting grilled pretty hard on a bunch of "basic" physics (2 hours of questions).
At one point I was unable to rearrange a (very) simple algebraic equation so it was a pretty humbling experience.
Overall though it went well and the guys appreciated an advance warning of what to expect for their own defenses.
If SCT plays a decent length turnset coming up though I think the rest of the game will be pretty straightforward in the sense that our options will be very limited.
It looks like we are behind the Russian teams. This raises the question of how many turns can be saved by launching an incomplete space ship. Is it enough to justify the risk of failure?
It looks like I'm ready to play. I'll plan on starting in about 8 hours unless I hear objections.
I've been pretty well behaved over the last few years with respect to computer related spending so I have some ammo with which to defend myself when my wife launches her assault on my gaming plans (she attacks at pleased).
Cactus Pete said:Nice going, PK. Know you're glad the burden is lifted. Wish my defense had been public -- one of my committee raised frivolous issues that set me back several months, and I don't think he would have done so with an audience of students as well as the committee.
Looking good SCT. Looks like Korea is about to become a has been.I played part way through T137 and I'm calling it a night.
Seoul, Pyongyang, and Nampo are all ours and a couple other Korean cities will fall in the next turn or two. We will be ready to declare on Shaka in two turns.
Is it more efficient to gift Justinian a Worker or to maintain control of a Worker until Coal is connected and then gift it to him?Not much to comment on, Justins city Huamanga has coal that he needs to improve, we might have to gift him another worker to speed that up.
As does Vandal which we may need to go ahead and conquer in order to let justin take control of the tile.
It's starting to look like having a PhD is a prerequisite for being in X-Team!?
It looks like a choice of spending one turn to research Printing Press or doing without until it can be traded for, although it looks like that may never happen? One issue I need clarified is how to give Justinian Steam Power. I've given him Guilds and Banking, but he needs Replaceable Parts before Steam Power. But we don't have Printing Press, and this is a prereq for SP. Without SP, Justinian can't hook coal.
Where is my tall, conical cap?Leif, without PhDs, you and I can form the dunce faction of XTeam.

Perhaps CP has already gifted Steam Power to Justinian? That would explain why we can't give it to him.
